TECHNOLOGY LAB SAFETY
General Machine Safety rules
1. Always wear safety glasses when using any machine.
2. Always ask the instructor’s permission to use any machine before using.
3. Do not wear loose clothing and tie back long hair when operating a machine.
4. Always stop the machine before making any adjustment.
5. Never talk to or disturb anyone using a machine. One person at a time.
6. If you hear a strange noise or the machine malfunctions turn it off. Take a step back and notify the
instructor.
7. Notify the instructor of any special set-ups or if you are unsure of something.
8. If you observe another student in trouble hit the emergency stop button and notify the instructor.
Drill press safety
1. Always check twice to be sure the chuck key is removed before starting the drill press.
2. Hold material down on the table firmly by using a clamp to secure it.
3. Use a piece of scrap wood underneath your material to provide for clean hole and protection of the table.
4. Clear the hole on a deep cut to prevent the bit from clogging or burning.
5. Let the machine come to a complete stop before removing any materials.
6. Let the machine coast to a stop don’t grab the chuck.
Band saw safety

Don’t make any sharp turns when cutting with the band saw, unless using relief cuts.
Don’t back out of a long cut. Back out of a short cut very slowly.
Don’t stand to the right side of the machine.
Use for cutting wood and plastic. No metal.
The BLADE GUIDE should be 1/4” above the material.
Fingers should not be in the” Line of Cut” when cutting.
Make relief cuts before cutting a sharp curve.
If the blade breaks turn off the machine. Take a step back and notify the instructor.
Don’t remove scrap pieces while the blade is moving.

Use for cutting tight turns on a piece of wood.
Keep the Hold Down (Pressure Foot) tight on top of the material.
Keep fingers away from the line - of - cut.
Always hold material down firmly.
Don’t remove any material while the blade is moving.
If the blade breaks turn the machine off, take a step back and notify the instructor.
Belt/Disc Sander Safety

Do not use if the belt or disk is burnt or clogged. Notify the instructor.
Keep your fingers and hands away from the belt or disk.
When you first turn on the machine check the tracking.
Material should be held flat on the table.
Don’t sand tiny or thin pieces which you can’t hold securely.
Check the material for hardware or paint which can damage and rip the belt.
