About The Roses
Our Mission
We aspire to be an outward looking, innovative and inclusive centre for the arts, offering a diverse creative
experience of the highest quality for our communities
About Us
The Roses is a busy 374 seat live theatre and independent cinema, presenting more than 180 live
performances, 320 film screenings, and a growing programme of live screenings each year, to which annual
admissions are around 80,000. The Roses also has a renowned Take Part programme which delivered
approximately 10,000 participant sessions last year.
The live programme encompasses a wide range of touring professional music, drama, children’s theatre,
dance, opera, ballet and comedy, and also offers opportunities for amateur and community performances.
The dance programme in particular presents leading dynamic UK companies whilst the home-produced
professional family pantomime is an annual highlight.
The Take Part department delivers an ever growing range of youth, outreach, education and community
projects. These include five weekly youth theatre groups, three weekly dance groups, arts workshops in
every school holiday, programmes for schools and a range of work targeted to disadvantaged and
disaffected young people.
The work also has a particular focus on mental health issues and we have run a very successful arts and
health project Art Lift in recent years working with patients referred from surgeries throughout
Tewkesbury. The Roses has developed a distinct brand of innovative work in communities and works with
statutory and non statutory organisations to deliver social agendas, such as reductions in school exclusions,
healthier communities, a reduction in crime amongst teenagers. We have also focussed on work with
families affected by domestic abuse and recently led on a county wide project working with arts
organisations across Gloucestershire. We regard the Take Part work as every bit important as the
programme on stage.
The prestigious programme of the best of British and International film makes The Roses the most
important independent film theatre in the region. Recent grant awards from South West Screen have
allowed the development of regular film forums and a programme of visiting guest speakers and directors.
The Roses has just produced its second commissioned archive film, looking at Gloucestershire communities
past and present.
The Roses has also introduced regular live screenings of arts events from all over the world. The recent
programme has included live broadcasts of opera from The Met New York, a range of plays from the
National Theatre and screenings from art exhibitions from around the world. The screenings are very
popular offering our audiences a chance to experience world class arts events at a fraction of the price and
have attracted significant new audiences.
Thus The Roses is an important regional arts centre for performing arts and film. It draws audience from
across a wide region: from the south side of Birmingham to the north side of Bristol down the spine of the
M5, including the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean, West Herefordshire and South Worcestershire. 25% of
the audience comes from beyond the Gloucestershire postcode area.

About Our Future
In a time of declining public funding, The Roses has been proactive in endeavouring to secure its future and
we are starting to get national recognition for our efforts. The Roses is an Arts Council National Portfolio
Organisation with secured Arts Council funding over the next few years. We are also successful in raising
funds from trusts, businesses, lottery funds and local authority commissions.
About Our Organisation
The Roses Theatre Trust is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. Responsibility for
governance rests with the Board (currently 8 Trustees). The Theatre Director is the chief executive
responsible to the Board for the artistic programme, the financial outcomes, and the management of the
organisation.
The Roses employs 25-30 people on a regular basis. Many are permanent part-time. Our staff play an
important role as a successful and committed team, within which personal development is encouraged and
from whom input on all aspects of the theatre is valued.
We would not be able to maintain the high standards of customer care for which we are renowned without
our cherished volunteers, a group of over 80 people of all ages who give up their time to steward all
performances, help with Take Part activities, fundraise and generally make a visit to the Roses a smooth
and enjoyable one.
The Roses is delighted to have been successful in gaining National Portfolio funding from the Arts Council
England, with an increase in funding of just over 40%. There is financial support and a close working
relationship with Tewkesbury Borough Council. The Roses is a lead member of Create Gloucestershire, the
county wide arts consortium which receives funds from Gloucestershire County Council
We pride ourselves on a friendly welcome to public and artists alike. There is a strong culture of customer
care, coupled with a pro-active selling approach. Although the theatre receives a good level of public
funding, it must earn 75% of its turnover in sales. The Roses has become highly regarded throughout a
wide region for the diversity and quality of the programme, and for a happy atmosphere enjoyed by staff,
artists and audience.
About The Marketing Department
The marketing department supports The Roses strategic objectives with particular focus on the following:





To build a sustainable future for The Roses through attracting investment and resource from
partners and by maximising our own earned income
To engage younger audiences in all areas of The Roses programme
To use digital technology to engage new audiences
To work collaboratively and in partnership
To develop The Roses flagship programmes – Dance, Take Part and film
The busy Marketing department focuses on marketing the 500 performances or screening that take place
each year. The amount of time that can be spent on each event is limited and consequently certain events
are given priority. This might be within the content of maximising income or from the decision to engage
new audiences.

The department also supports the work of the Take Part department, focusing on engagement and
participation in the arts. Workshops, weekly courses and special projects and events are all supported with
specialised targeted of participants where appropriate.
The Marketing department is responsible for building the image of The Roses increasing our profile and
enhancing our perception in the eyes of the local communities, regional area and nationally. We have
strong links with local media and press and some good regional contacts.
We aim to increase revenues from film and live sales by 7% in 2014. This will be supported by the following
new initiatives:




A launch of a new brochure strategy in 2014
Continued development of the re-branded Friends scheme
Working with Baker Richards across our whole programme
Using new Box Office tools to be more targeted and aggressive with cross selling
About Tewkesbury
Tewkesbury is a growing market town at the junction of the rivers Avon & Severn. It has strong medieval
links as the site of the decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses and with its lovely Abbey. Though very
attractive in its setting, historic buildings and lanes, it has not become a tourist magnet and remains a
down to earth community. It is surrounded by glorious countryside and, situated just off the M5, is easily
accessible to a wide region, including rural areas such as the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean as well as
the urban areas of Birmingham and Bristol.

This post is being offered as either a part time post (3 day/ 4 day) or a full time post

Purpose Of The Role
To lead the Marketing Department through 2014; responsible for strategic planning and delivery, team
management, and hands on work. To take specific responsibility to raise the profile of The Roses,
coordinating and maximising all press opportunities. To work with the Marketing Officer (Campaign
Coordinator) to ensure successful campaigns are delivered and to work across both the marketing and
sales teams to ensure audiences and developed and income is maximised. To support the team with their
responsibilities as necessary.
The Marketing And Press Manager is a member of the Senior Management Team.

Job Description – Key Tasks And Responsibilities
Strategy
To deliver in accordance with the aims of the business plan, focusing on increased sales and implementing
strategies to develop particular audiences.
To monitor all statistics, behavioural patterns, Box Office sales and audience information in order to
identify trends and patterns which paint a picture of our audience.
To work closely with other members of the Senior Management team to constantly improve our customer
experience and customer relationship management.

To work with the Marketing Officer (Campaign Coordinator) and our web design company Deckchair to
keep abreast of online opportunities and web developments, implementing and monitoring new ideas as
appropriate.
Capital Campaign
To be a key player within The Roses 40th birthday campaign and capital appeal, taking responsibility for
planning and implementing marketing initiatives with a view to audience development.
To work across the organisation, creating and implementing a strategic press plan to maximise all capital
campaign press opportunities, with a view to securing national coverage as well as building on relationships
with existing and new journalists.
Public Relations
To plan, deliver and monitor effective media coverage for all activities at The Roses, both in terms of show
campaign work the work of other departments.
To implement appropriate PR events and activities to raise the profile of The Roses.
To support our Marketing Intern (or taking the lead yourself if the internship is vacant) using Vocus, our
press monitoring system, to accurately record all press coverage, and to use this coverage to re-generate
future income and engagement across social media and visits to our website.
Management
To act as a member of the Senior Management team within the organisation, keeping abreast of all
department’s activity, with a view to marketing projects, documenting progress, maximising press
opportunities, and raising the profile of The Roses through this work.
To manage and motivate staff to ensure that the department achieves its outcomes.
To ensure that the Marketing and Box Office staff work well and closely together; emphasising the notion
of one joined up team.
To take responsibility for the department budget, ensuring that all activity is accounted for and is
contained within budget
Marketing And Sales
To identify The Roses’ need with regards to our Box Office provider and to work closely with their
development team to ensure that our needs are met and to an agreed time frame
To work closely with the Marketing Officer (Campaign Coordinator) to plan targeted, creative and
memorable season campaigns to schedule and to date, settling for nothing less than hitting the targets as
agreed with the director.
To work closely with the Marketing Officer (Campaign Coordinator) to create all marketing materials and
campaign assets needed in advance of the start of the season, with an eye to their distribution.

To work closely with the Marketing Officer (Campaign Coordinator) to maintain The Roses’ brand
standards and to adhere to our guidelines, representing The Roses’ brand values across all printed and
online materials and all marketing campaign assets and all aspects our work
To provide pastoral, strategic and operational support to the Box Office Manager with a full understanding
of the Box Office system Patronbase.
To influence point of sale procedures to support marketing and fundraising success
To work closely with the Take Part and Fundraising department, ensuring you are engaged with projects
from the start, in order to create realistic and sustainable marketing plans for all activity, and then to
delegate marketing outcomes to the Marketing Apprentice and Interns as appropriate.
To work closely with the Box Office Manager to execute the Friends marketing plan, putting in place and
adhering to realistic deadlines for marketing outcomes. To monitor growth accordingly and to react to any
reduced speed in membership sales.
To oversee the co-ordination of all brochures according to the existing schedule, with our design company

Person Specification
To have been in an arts marketing management role for at least three years







Fixed Term Contract for 7 months with the possibility of extension should the current post holder
return later from leave
Salary: £24,000 – 25,500 (pro-rata will apply)

This position is a maternity cover position, the duration of which is to be confirmed.
This post is offered on a part time or full time basis (minimum 3 days a week)
