Class Project: Art 100
Whatcom Place Quilt: Visual Symbols
Objective: In this project students will create an
artwork in response to an assigned theme.
Through this project students will explore the
creative process, and how visual imagery can
work as a type of language.
The Assignment: As a team of students create a
black and white panel for a larger quilt. Use the
visual strategies of silhouette when creating your
images. Avoid line drawings.

Research:
Kept simple- a field trip with cameras, and a short
discussion at the beach.

Materials: Tyvek, Sharpie Markers, Black Paint
Techniques: Students worked in teams with a
variety of techniques and strategies.
Overhead projector used
to transfer photo that
has been xeroxed onto
transparency sheets.
Students use the
projector to enlarge the
photo and can alter and
edit as they draw.
Students working
with images and
field trip notes as
inspiration for less
direct drawing. This
team is using two
techniques: direct
painting and cutting
silhouettes.
The labor intensive technique
of cutting stensils.
Putting it all together!
The finished “Cherry Point”
quilt.
One team was responsible for
the borders of the piece.
