Christmas Celebration Start of Winter Vacation Our Learning Now: Here are some of the areas we are learning about now and where we will be headed when we return back to school January 2nd. Reading In reading we will be working on our reading assessment called the Fountas and Pinnell Reading test. We will also be working on Greek and Latin root words, understanding the root will help us to break down the word and understand unknown words. Science We are starting a unit on invertebrates. We will study the different classification of invertebrates. Each student will select an invertebrate to research. The students will synthesize their research into a keynote presentation to be shared with the class. Writing We will be using our reading to write opinion pieces about The Land of Stories, as well as an informational brochure. To end the unit the students will write a fictional narrative concerning a fractured fairy tale. We will also look at non-fiction narratives when conducting our invertebrate research. Math We have started and will continue to work on our Division unit. One of the most important tasks you can do at home with your child is to study multiplication and division facts. The faster the students are able to solve these facts, the easier division will be for them. We will be dividing in two different ways. The first is the traditional algorithm; this is the way many of us learned in school. The second is using a multiplication menu. 2
