SC12.13/4.10.1 Policy Review Proposer: Andrew Thompson Warwick No:0919393 Seconder: Kit Long Warwick No:0905606 ___________________________________________________________________________ 017 BUS FARES This Union Notes: 1. That there are two main bus services which student use to get onto campus; Travel Coventry’s Number 12 and Stagecoach’s Unibus.1 2. That for the Number 12, from Coventry to campus a single ticket costs £1.70 and a daysaver costs £3.70. For the Unibus from Leamington to campus a single ticket costs £2.45, a return ticket costs £3.25, and a daysaver costs £7.45.2 3. That it is more expensive to purchase a single from Leamington to campus (£2.45) compared to purchasing a single in London (£2.40; £1.40 with an Oyster card).3 4. That the two bus companies do offer an annual bus pass, which does make bus travel cheaper overall for the year.4,5 This Union Believes: 1. That for Stagecoach and Travel Coventry this price has risen substantially in recent years. 2. That for a number of students living off campus, bus travel is the only option to be able to get onto campus. 3. That bus fares for students are currently too high. 1 http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/directions/localbuses/ Rang up the bus companies. 3 http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14415.aspx 4 http://nxbus.co.uk/coventry/tickets-prices/travelcards/student-bus-passes-2012-08-15 5 http://www.stagecoachbus.com/tickets.aspx?ref=&inaction=inaction&location_id=322&product_id=2&univer sity_id=130&x=62&y=2&drpOperator2=-1 Page 1 of 2 017 - Bus Fares (Welfare and Community) 2 4. That students are a low-income group in society and should be given more support to cope with the financial pressures of going to University. 5. That the increases in bus fares have been too high and are unfairly hitting student pockets. 6. That there has not been an adequate increase in the level of service when compared to the increase in fares. 7. That the general cost of student living is on the rise, as other costs including accommodation rents continue to increase. 8. That the number of students going into part-time work is increasing. 9. That it is not right that students should be forced into part-time work to fund their studies or into further debt as a result of the rising cost of student living. 10. That while the annual bus pass makes travel cheaper over the year, some students who travel less frequently, or are unable to pay upfront at the start of the year, are disadvantaged from this scheme. 11. That the Union currently does very little to campaign against this important issue. 12. That a number of students feel very strongly about this. This Union Resolves: 1. To mandate the President, Welfare and Campaigns Officer, Campaigns Convention and the Democracy and Development Officer to campaign and put pressure on Stagecoach and Travel Coventry to make bus travel more affordable for students.
