RELAY! ( CHAIN REACTION)
Learning Target
I can:
o Find the domain of a composite function
Homework!
I am going to come around and check off if you did the extra
credit problem + the homework ( worksheet)
While doing that, do the warm-up!
I expect 100% participation!!!
WARM-UP!
Given f(x) = x + 1 and g(x) = x2. Simplify your final answer. DO THIS ON
YOUR WHITEBOARD
(a) (g  f)(x)
(b) (f  f)(x)

Group Work 2
Work on Group Work #2
When done work on the challenge problem! If you are the first
to be done with the challenge problem with the correct answer
I will give you candy!!!!
Table Challenge!!
Your team’s job is to get a specific output by putting functions in a
particular order so that one function’s output becomes the next
function’s input. As you work, discuss what you know abut the
kind of output each function produces to help you arrange the
machines in an appropriate order. The four functions are below.
In what order should you stack the functions so that
when 64 is dropped into the first function, and all four
functions have had their effect, the last function's
output is 131,065.
How do you Find the Domain?
Domain:
• Set of all numbers x in the domain such that both g(x) and f(g(x)) are
defined.
How do you find the domain of a composite function?
① Evaluate the composite function
② Find the domain of the inside function.
③ Find the domain of the composite function. ( from step 1)
④ What you found in Steps 2 and 3 must be accounted for.
Example 5
Relay!
• Take out a piece of paper and put your table # on it.
• Each table is going to get a bag of four functions ( one of each color).
• Pass one function card to each student.
Relay!
Directions:
① I am going to call out a number.
② Student with Function #1 evaluates the function for the number.
MUST show work ( at least the substitution of the number) and
write the answer to their step on the paper.
③ Then pass to student with Function #2. That student is going to put
Function #1’s answer into Function #2.
④ Then that student passes to person who has Function #3 and they
evaluate. Continue until all four people evaluated using the value
obtained by the previous student.
⑤ When done, raise your hand and I will check your final answer. If you
were incorrect, go back and try to find your mistake.
⑥ If you are the first table to win, you get 4 points, 2nd 3 points, 3rd 2
pts and all groups who get the final answer gets one point.
Relay!
Expectations
① You may not shout out the answer. If you do, your team will get
disqualified for that round.
② After each round, you will switch which Function # you have.
③ The team who gets the most points after all the rounds will earn
candy.
④ I expect 100% participation.
Homework Time
I expect 100% participation.
Please note: There is a CHALLENGE problem on the back of the
homework. If you get that correct with ALL work shown you will receive
3 extra points on this homework assignment!
