0 1927 - The Cristero War erupts in Mexico when rebels
attack the Government.
0 1937- Nelson starts attending Healdtown, the
Wesleyan college at Fort Beaufort.
0 1939- Enrolls at the University College of Fort Hare, in
Alice.
0 1940- Nelson gets expelled from University College of
Fort Hare.
1941-1943
0 1941- Mandela escapes an arranged marriage. He also
becomes a night mine watchman. Mandela starts writing
articles for the law firm Witkin, Sidelsky & Eidelman.
0 1942- Nelson completes his BA through the University of
South Africa (UNISA). He begins to attend African National
Congress (ANC) meetings informally.
0 1942 – WWII was happening .
0 1943- He graduate with his BA from Fort Hare and enrolls
at Wits University for an LLB.
1944 - 1951
0 1944 - Mandela co-founds the ANC Youth League
(ANCYL)
0 1944 - Marries Evelyn Ntoko Mase and they have four
children.
0 1948 – Nelson Mandela is elected national secretary
of the ANCYL.
0 1949 – December – Typhoon in Korea.
0 1951 – He is elected president of the ANCYL in 1951.
1952
0 The defiance campaign begins, and Mandela is arrested for

violating the Suppression of Communism act.
Nelson Mandela is elected the ANC president of the
Transvaal. Convicted with Walter Sisulu and 17 others.
Mandela and the others are the sentenced to 9 months of
hard labour.
Madiba is then suspended from the ANC for two years.
In 1952 Nelson Mandela opens the first black law firm with
Oliver Tambo.
The winter Olympics were held in Oslo, Norway.
1953 – 1961
0 1953 – Nelson Mandela devises the M-plan for the
ANC’s further underground operations.
0 1956 - Arrested along with 155 others on trial for
treason. Proved innocent on the 29th March 1961.
0 1961 – March 29th America votes
1962 – 1964
0 August 5th – Marilyn Monroe is found dead from an
overdose of sleeping pills and chloral hydrate,
officially ruled a “probable suicide” . However, the
exact cause of her death has been disputed.
0 12th June – Nelson Mandela was arrested.
0 12th June – Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton
announces his candidacy for the Republican
Presidential nomination, as part of a ‘stop-Goldwater’
movement.
1990
0 February 11th – Nelson Mandela is released from
prison after 27 years.
0 President De Klerk lifts the ban on the African
National Congress (ANC).
0 The ANC and the white National Party begin talks on
forming a multi-racial democracy for South Africa
1991
0 Nelson Mandela becomes President of the ANC.
0 The International Olympics Committee lift a 21 year
ban on South African athletes competing in the
Olympic Games.
1994
0 April 26th – Free Elections where black South Africans
are allowed to vote for the first time. Nelson Mandela
runs for President.
0 The ANC won 252 out of 400 in the National voting.
0 May – Inaugurated as the first black President of
South Africa. He appoints De Klerk as deputy
President and forms as racially mixed Government of
National Unity.
