Thursday Chemistry
Warning: learning ahead!
The class will run approx 25 weeks. Begins September 16, 2010 Ends April 14, 2011
(No class 11/25, 12/16, 12/23, 12/30, 1/6, 3/17)
$20 per session that you attend. Missing 3 or more sessions drops you from the class unless
teacher approved. If you miss a class, it is highly likely there will be no makeup session as my schedule
is incredibly full, but you can still do the work on your own by reading the book, and you can ask your
classmates for help also. And I am always available by email to answer short questions.
Please order the textbook ASAP.
Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation by Zumdahl/DeCoste, 6th Edition

(about $49 at bookfinder.com or amazon.com)

log and exponent) 1 or 1.5 inch 3-ring binder, email account, internet access
The book has a companion website that has a few videos and has lists of vocabulary with definitions.
Also there are tests multiple choice online for each chapter, which you will do online and then email the
results to me.

Homework: I will assign weekly homework and collect it. This will be listed on the Chapter To Do List
on my website.
I am not grading the overall course, but will give you feedback on individual homework and you'll have
online test grades that a parent can use to formulate a grade for your own transcript.
The Overall Plan:
Before class: Follow the Chapter To Do list on my website. Student reads the chapter and watches
any videos I assign or recommend. Student writes all terms and definitions into notebook for current
chapter. You can just copy these from the companion website.
During class: I instruct, we discuss, we put things into our course notebook which I will provide. We
can spend a little time going over homework, if needed. Student turns in homework. Student gets
homework back from previous week and keeps this in the 3 ring binder.
After class: student finishes filling in course notebook with things I want in there. Student rereads or
reviews chapter. Student does homework on notebook paper and turns it in at next class. Student can
watch more videos and use the study aids online. Student does the online test and emails results to me.
If you are confused on homework, you can wait and take the online test til after you see me again and
can ask questions. The home lab activities are optional. Not sure we will have one every week, but I am
finding some you can do. They should be fun and only require simple home materials or a few easy to
find things at the store. Lab activities also are kept in the 3-ring binder - No formal lab write ups. Some
observations, data, conclusions maybe, or pictures of what you make or see.
I figure 5-6 hours of work per week outside of class. This may vary depending on the topic and your
own personal work speed.
read the book, copy terms and definitions 1.5-2 hours
do homework, finish putting info into course book 2 hours
take online test 30 min - 1 hour
at home lab activity, optional 1 hour
I guess you should add a bit of study time as well.
Extra Help: You can see me outside of class either during the 60 min before class or 30 min after class,
but you have to schedule that with me ahead of time so I can plan that into my day. And I am always
available by email to answer short questions.
