Grade Nine Music Course Outline

Purpose
The purpose of Grade Nine Music is to provide students with the opportunity to gain a sense of the world of music by
focusing upon the study of performance, theory and musical elements
Objectives
When you have finished this course you will be able to:
a) Identify and demonstrate an understanding of fundamental music terminology as it relates to the keyboard and
musical style
b) Identify and demonstrate an understanding of the Surface Elements of Music
c) Assess and evaluate the quality of a musical experience by applying your knowledge of the Surface Elements
d) Compare, contract and analyze various styles of music using the Elements
e) Appreciate and explain the importance of music to a culture
f) Identify, understand and demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of Music Theory
g) Perform several pieces of music at a competent level on a keyboard instrument
Course Components
In order for us to reach our objectives we will approach the course material in three components

Musical Elements
Music History, Style and Culture
Textbooks
There is no assigned textbook for this course but references to the following will be utilized. These will include: The
Enjoyment of Music and For Young Musicians.
Materials
Each student is required to bring the following to each music class: binder, loose leaf, pen, pencil, eraser, agenda,
headphones, manuscript paper/dictation book.
Assessment
Performance opportunities, projects, self-assessments, aural/ear training quizzes, peer assessment, pen/paper tests and
quizzes

Performance: 50%

Units of Study
1) Music Performance and Terminology
 Basic Notes, Rhythms and Rests, Time Signatures, Ties and Slurs, Repeat Signs, First and Second
Endings and D.C./D.S. al Coda and Fine
2) The Surface Elements of Music
 Rhythm, Tempo, Dynamics, Timbre (Tone Color) and Melody
3) Music History, Style, and Culture
 The material for our music history, style, and culture unit will be covered as we work our way through the
elements.
Academic Deadlines for Essential (Major) Assignments:

Late assignments are deducted by 10% per day; after four (4) days, the assignment becomes a pass or fail
(maximum 60%)
