SIXTH GRADE MUSIC SYLLABUS 2012 Course description This course develops skills in reading, writing, creating and appreciating music. Content includes instruction in vocal and instrumental performance, study of music from Asian and Latin cultures, exploration of several musical styles especially those popular in America from late 1800’s through early 1900’s, American Musical Theater and the understanding of music vocabulary and symbols. Course goals 1. Gain a true appreciation for music and the fine Arts. 2. Achieve the ability to read and understand music and related vocabulary to an age appropriate level. Required materials Paper, pencil, blue or black ink pen, and Folder with pockets ( Kleenex - optional) Course Requirements 1. Sing, with a group, assigned music. 2. Identify by sight and sound the major instruments of the 4 instrument families. 3. Demonstrate a general knowledge of important American composers (such as Sousa & Gershwin), dating between the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s. 4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of one example of American Musical Theater through written assessment. 5. Demonstrate ability to read simple music by performing on an instrument such as xylophone, piano, bells or recorders. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of musical elements through written assessment and by using vocabulary through on-going class discussions of music articles, text information and verbal music analysis. 7. Demonstrate a musical understanding of the historical periods Romantic-20th century. 8. Demonstrate a knowledge & understanding of the key characteristics of Latin music. Academic honesty policy : Cheating and plagiarism will not be permitted. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing on their work, will receive 0% on said assignment. This includes talking to other students while a test is in process, looking off someone else’s test or worksheet for answers and using any other unauthorized assistance on tests or assignments.
