The intended subject specific learning outcomes By the end of this module, students will have acquired: 11.1 An ability to select appropriate OR and statistical techniques applicable to a given practical problem. 11.2 An ability to develop an appropriate mathematical or statistical model and perform the necessary analysis of it (including specialised models according to option chosen). 11.3 Ability to communicate the outcome of the model analysis to non-specialists recognising the limitations of the model and demonstrating an awareness of the social and cultural context. 12. A synopsis of the curriculum The curriculum aims to provide a solid foundation in the principles of operational research and business statistics. It provides knowledge of the appropriate software packages and their application in modelling and statistical analysis. Students will practice the application of operational research techniques and gain an appreciation of the wider applications of these techniques. 14. Indicative Reading List Readings will vary depending on which modules students take. 15. Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended module learning outcomes: Learning and teaching methods will vary depending on the modules on which the student is registered. Typical methods will include lectures, seminars, practical sessions and independent study and would relate to learning outcomes 11.1-11.3 and 12.1-12.3. 16. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended module learning outcomes Written examination papers (time-constrained); coursework essays, reports and computational questions; computer-based assignments; dissertations/ reports; presentations. Coursework/projects generally contribute 30%--40% of the overall module mark, the examination normally counts for 60%--70% of the overall module mark. The variety of assessment methods undertaken relate to learning outcomes 11.1-11.3 and 12.1-12.3. 17.
