Sula Reading Log

LGHS – Comp/Lit 11 – Ms. White

Name:__________________________Date:______Period:______

Directions:

Toni Morrison’s Sula is not a simple or “easy” text. In fact, it’s rich in figurative language and imagery, complex vocabulary, and elusive details and descriptions. Therefore, it’s important that we track our experience through a reading log. Each section of the reading log should be clearly labeled and the log should be completed with your reading of each section.

You should expect that your journals will be checked/collected for credit on each day that the reading is due. That means, each time you’re assigned a section to read, you are also assigned a journal to complete on that section.

Journal Requirements (One for each section; there are 7 sections, so you’ll complete 7 reading logs total):

1.

Heading should include the section and page numbers.

2.

Image : Create a small, but detailed and meaningful, drawing to show visualization and symbolic representation of the main issues, events, characters, etc. Use labels if need be.

3.

Love or Death : Choose either the theme of Love or Death. Then, give the character and event involved and a MLA cited quote. Finally, give a 3-5 sentence response.***

4.

Color : MLA cite a quote that includes color. Give a 3-5 sentence response, including an explanation of what you think the colors’ connotation and/or purpose is/are.***

5.

Escape, Recreating Identity, or the Illusion of the American Dream: Choose one of these themes. Then, give the character(s) and event(s) involved and a MLA cited quote.

Finally, give a 3-5 sentence response.***

6.

Question : Write one meaningful question you have about the text or about an idea/theme that is highlighted in the text.

***Please note: Be sure that your responses are minimum 3-5 sentences when required. Also, a response should not be a summary of what happened. A response should be a reaction, connection, prediction, inference, understanding, and/or question, etc.

Use the following reading response starters if you are having trouble:

 I predict that…because…  I would change…because…  If I were this character…

 I want to ask the author…

 This reminds me of…

 I was puzzled by…

 What I didn’t know was…

 I agree/disagree with…

 I learned…

 I can picture/feel…

 It was really interesting when…

Since you should expect that these journals will be collected/checked each time the reading for the chapter is due, you should expect that these journals add up to 70 points total, (10 points/journal).

Use the space on the back to complete the journal for Section 1, so that you will always have an example of what your journals should look like and consist of.
