Reading and Writing Lessons Reading Lesson 2 I can meet with my book clubs and discuss the way we will run our groups. Timed Reading • I will give you 5 minutes to read. • Take your time, don’t rush. • After 5 minutes, we will stop and calculate how many pages per minute we read. • Pages/minutes Talk Map • Set up your talk map by tracing squares on folder. • Put your name on each square. • Cut out the question strips and place in envelope. Writing Lesson 2 • I can travel to stations and investigate life in my time in history. You will have 7 minutes at each station. Discuss some positive behaviors you can show in book club meetings. What are some questions you can ask to keep the conversation going? Do you like bookclubs, why or why not? Keeping Track of the Important Information Who is in the story? Where is the story taking place? When is the story taking place? (this is very important in historical fiction.) What is happening so far? Book Club • Read with the essential questions in mind. • You will have 20 minutes to read and 15 minutes to discuss. • Jot your ideas and place them on your talk maps. Writing Lesson 3 • I will continue to research my time period and create a timeline of my events. Where do you think your story will take place? Tell about your character. Give some examples of some problems that your character will overcome. Writing Workshop • We will use ipads and laptops to visit websites that will give us more information on our time period. • Make sure you take notes, draw sketches and write down interesting facts that will help you write the story.
