Arrival Information & Other Important Tidbits Check-In When can I check in? Check-in is on Saturday between noon and 6:00 p.m. Do not arrive before noon as you will not be allowed to check-in early. If you must arrive after 6pm the RA on duty will complete your check-in process. The guard will contact the RA on duty in these instances. For special cases, we may let you check in with the guard or building manager Monday-Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. with the Resident Assistant. You must contact interns@internsdc.com. Where do I park during check-in? There is two-hour on-street parking on Connecticut Avenue from 9:30am until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day on the weekends. Do not park on Connecticut Avenue during rush hour or you will be ticketed immediately. Please unload as quickly as possible and move your car so that other residents may move in. We do not have a parking lot and you are not authorized to park behind our building (it is for staff only). What do you have to help move my stuff? To assist you we have laundry carts and dollies, ramps leading up to the front door, and an elevator. However, during high traffic times the elevator gets full quickly and the carts disappear. As you are moving in, please bring the carts downstairs as soon as you have finished with them. Can I ship my belongings before I arrive? Yes. Include the apartment number on all correspondence to the building. The address is: 2807 Connecticut Ave NW—Washington DC 20008. The post office will “return to sender” any mail that does not have an apartment number. Mailboxes are allocated per suite. Packages that are too large to fit in your mailbox are stored in Suite 102. Although we have had almost no problems with this system, WISH discourage sending or receiving expensive packages, especially ones that are marked with enticing labels such as Dell Computer or Amazon.com. PLEASE NOTE that WISH is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged packages. Why do I need to send in two passport-size photos? One photo is for your WWP ID card that you will need each time you enter the building. The other photo is used for the security guards and staff to have access. Can I bring the photos with me to check in? No, WISH prepares these ID cards prior to your arrival. If you have not done so, please email a photo with your name and school on the subject line of the email to interns@internsdc.com at least one week prior to your arrival. Where can I stay if I need to be in DC before the building opens or after it closes? Exceptions to the building opening and closing dates (even one day) are rarely allowed. During the short period of time that the building is closed resident assistants, cleaners, painters, and our maintenance crew go through each of the rooms. When students remain in the building it slows down the turnover process which is why we usually cannot make exceptions. There are local hotels which can be found on the building’s website, wishwoodleypark.com. we ask that you avoid staying in youth hostels if possible. The Building Can I store personal items at WISH Woodley Park before I arrive? Only in the rarest of circumstances may students store their belongings on shelves in the maintenance room. It is dusty, sometimes left unlocked for contractors who do not have the key, and used frequently by non-WISH personnel. PLEASE NOTE WISH does not take responsibility for any personal belongings of the residents. Are there laundry facilities? Yes, there is a laundry room in the basement. Washers and dryers are card operated and cost $1.50 each. Cards are available for purchase in the laundry room. The Apartment What’s In an Apartment? The WWP apartments come furnished with: -The living area consists of a sofa, 2 upholstered chairs, a dining table and 2 desks. -The kitchen includes basic utensils, silverware, dishes, bowls, glasses, major appliances (oven, microwave, and dishwasher) and a full size refrigerator/freezer. - Each apartment has 3 bedrooms, which will be double occupancy, unless a single has been requested and approved well in advance. In each room is a set of dressers, a nightstand, per student along with a shared double closet. - There are 2 bathrooms in each apartment - There is no cafeteria on-site, so students will be responsible for their own meals Do the rooms have Internet access? Yes. Each bedroom and common room area has access to Internet. The cost for computer use is factored in the housing fee. Your computer must have a network interface card (NIC) installed in order to use the internet. Most new computers have this. Also, you must bring your own Ethernet cable for connection. There is only one hard wired connection in each room, but we have plenty of multi-port switches that you may borrow. Just see your resident assistant after checking in. Do you have wireless Internet? We do not have wireless Internet set up, and for security reasons, we frown on its use in the apartments. Use of a wireless network is at your own risk. Will I have my own phone line? WISH does not provide phone service in apartments. You need to bring a mobile phone for local and long-distance service. I am married and would like to live with my spouse. Can you accommodate me? No. All apartments have three bedrooms and are single sex. Are there any single rooms? We cannot guarantee single room placements. All apartments have three bedrooms. If you are granted a single room you will have one bedroom to yourself but you will still share the common bathrooms, kitchen and living room. Single bedroom fees must be paid in full before arrival. Are towels or linens provided? No. You are required to bring all bedding (sheets for long twin-size beds (twin-long), blankets, pillows) and towels. Fluffy toilet paper like Charmin™ Our plumbing is a sensitive and cannot handle large volumes. Buy 1-ply toilet paper (Scott toilet paper) and never flush feminine hygiene products! Should I bring my car? Parking is very difficult in DC, especially for non-residents. Do not bring a car. You won’t need it. DC has a great, safe, and clean transportation system. Read about it at http://www.wmata.com/ (we are located at the Woodley Park stop on the Red line). We do not have any parking for students and if you park behind our building you will be ticketed. If you must bring a car, consider buying a parking space. The Marriott sells spaces by the month or by the day. You can contact them at 202/328-2000. You may also be able to buy a space from the Omni Shoreham (202/2340700) or the Days Inn (202/244-5600). You must make these arrangements individually. There is on-street parking available on the weekends, but there are parking restrictions during the week. You can apply for a parking permit for temporary residents (http://www.dmv.dcgov.org/ 202-727-5000). There is a cost associated with this permit, and it does not guarantee you a place to park. It is two blocks south of the National Zoo and two blocks north of the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro station. WISH Woodley Park is about 15 minutes from downtown DC. No. Gold’s gym in Van Ness (two metro stops north) offers a discount to students living in the Washington Center. The YMCA also offers student discounts and is metro assessable, three stops south. I would like to stay longer than I originally indicated? For the summer, if you would like to stay longer (but not past our closing date) we can usually accommodate you if we have ample advance notice. Send an email to interns@internsdc.com, indicating the change in date and how you would like to pay for the additional time. Your check-out date still needs to be on a weekend. For the Fall and Spring, late check-outs are rarely approved. If there is a special circumstance, please email your request to interns@internsdc.com. Can I be refunded if I will be away for a week or will leave a week early? No. You will be charged for the dates on your housing contract.
