Tesco History







Founded by Jack Cohen in 1919 with a market
stall in London’s East End
Opened first stores in 1929
Shares floated in 1947 and expansion
throughout the UK with a number of
acquisitions and new store openings – now
2115 in UK alone!
Launched Clubcard in 1995 and overtook
Sainsburys
Late 1990’s Overseas development commenced
In 2006 we started the expansion into America
with Fresh and Easy stores
Sales last year were 51.8 billion

1997: Tesco PLC acquired the retailing and supply
chain of Associated British Foods in Ireland – Better
known as the Quinnsworth and Crazy Prices retail
chain
There were 8,300 employees across 75 stores.
1998: Introduced Computers for Schools – since then
donated over €10 million of computer equipment to
Irish schools, Clubcard was introduced and became
Ireland’s leading loyalty programme
2000: Introduced Grocery Home Shopping – the first
online shopping service in Ireland, Save as you Earn
was introduced for staff
2001: First Tesco Ireland Charity of the Year
Programme – The Irish Cancer Society - since then
we have helped raise over €6 million for Irish
charities. Now promoting Make a Wish.

2004: Launched our first self scan
checkouts, opened our first express store
in Ratoath in Co Meath and our first Extra
in Clarehall, Dublin
2005: Opened our first Petrol Filling
Station in Dundrum, we now have 14
2007: Opened state of the art Distribution
Centre in Donabate Co Dublin, Tesco
Mobile was launched
2008: Today 111 stores employing over
14,000 staff and continuously innovating
products and services for our customers.

Tony Keohane – Chief Executive





Joined Quinnsworth in 1978 as a Store Manager
1981 - Promoted to Regional Manager - 20 stores
in the west region
1995 - appointed to the Board of Quinnsworth
1997 - appointed as a Director of Tesco Ireland,
following the acquisition of the
Quinnsworth/Crazy Prices business by Tesco plc.
1999 - appointed as a Stores Director of Tesco in
UK with 25 stores in the Manchester/ Birmingham
area
What success looks like….




2001 - Property and Supply Chain Director, Tesco
Ireland responsible for the successful
development of the Tesco stores network in
Ireland including the first Tesco Extra
hypermarkets in Ireland
2006 Appointed as Chief Executive
He currently chairs the Government appointed
Services Strategy Group.
Recently addressed the annual IMI conference on
aligning growth and sustainability, focusing on
adapting to the demands of climate change
