REASONS TO
PRAISE THE LORD
[PSALM 103:1-5]
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless
his holy name. Bless the Lord,
O my soul, and do not forget
all his benefits—who forgives
all your iniquity, who heals
all your diseases,
Psalm 103:1-5
who redeems your life from
the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and
mercy, who satisfies you with good as long
as you live so that your youth
is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psalm 103:1-5
It is with “all my inmost being”
or with all my soul.
Praise the LORD, O my soul; all
my inmost being, praise his holy name.Praise the
LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
You shall love the LORD
your God with all your
heart, with all your soul,
and with all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:5
“Inasmuch as these people draw near with
their mouths And honor Me
with their lips, But have
Isaiah 29:13
removed their hearts far
from Me, And their fear
toward Me is taught by
the commandment of men
Isaiah 29:13
Why praise God?
Why praise God with all of
our being or all our heart?
David gives us his reason to praise God: Bless the
Lord,
O my soul, and do not
forget all his benefits.
When you have eaten and are full, then
you shall bless the Lord your God for the
good land which He has given you.
Deut. 8:10-14
“Beware that you do not forget the Lord your
God by not keeping His commandments, His
judgments, and His statutes which I command
you today,
Deut. 8:10-14
lest—when you have eaten and are full, and
have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;
and when your herds and your flocks
multiply,
Deut. 8:10-14
and your silver and your gold are
multiplied, and
all that you have is multiplied; when your
heart is lifted up,
Deut. 8:10-14
and you forget the Lord your God who
brought
you out of the land of Egypt, from the
house
of bondage;
Deut. 8:10-14

Forgiveness is the reatest of all gifts that
we can receive from God, and the
first thing we need.
means reconciliation with
God; being restored to His favor.
Therefore, forgiveness is the gateway to
all other benefits or gifts from God.
• Adultery with Bathsheba, then the murder of
Uriah her husband
• David was moved by Satan to take a census of
Israel and Judah.
Guilt and Shame
• The effect of sins in our lives
• result in terrible emotional pain, even
anguish
• can cause, sorrow and depression
• can cause us to be angry and bitter
Out of the depths I have cried to You, O
Lord;
Lord, hear my voice!
Psalm 130:1-3
Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of
my supplications. If You, Lord, should
mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
Psalm 130:1-3
The plowers plowed on
my back; They made
their furrows long.
Psalm 129: 3
Blessed is he whose transgression is
forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is
the man to whom the Lord does not impute
iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no
deceit.
Psalm 32:1-2
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord
there is mercy, And with Him is abundant
redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel From all his
iniquities.
Psalm 130: 7-8
As far as the east is
from the west, so far
had He removed our transgressions from
us.
Psalm 130: 12
David praised God for healing.
We are still here today because God
healed our diseases whether by
medicine, our God-given immune
system, or His healing touch.
The pains of death surrounded me, And
the pangs of Sheol laid hold
of me; I found trouble
and sorrow.
Psalm 116:3-4
It is still God who can make medicine
work in our bodies. Without God’s grace
those medicines
will not work.
Surely He has borne our
griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we
esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by
God, and afflicted.
Isaiah 53:4-5
But He was wounded for
our transgressions, He was bruised for our
iniquities; The chastisement for our peace
was upon Him, And by His stripes we are
healed.
Isaiah 53:4-5
When evening had come, they brought to
Him many who were demon-possessed.
And He cast out the spirits with a word,
and healed all who were sick,
Matthew 8:16-17
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself
took our infirmities and bore our
sicknesses.”
Matthew 8:16-17
Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday,
today, and forever.
Hebrews 13:8
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had
finished these parables, that He departed
from there. When He had come to His
own country,
Matthew 13:53-58
He taught them in their synagogue, so that
they were astonished and said, “Where did
this Man get this wisdom and these
mighty works?
Matthew 13:53-58
Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His
mother called Mary? And His brothers
James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His
sisters, are they not all with us?
Matthew 13:53-58
Where then did this Man get all these
things?” So they were offended at
Him. But Jesus said to
them, “A prophet is not
without honor
Matthew 13:53-58
except in his own country and in his own
house.” Now He did not do many mighty
works there because of their unbelief.
Matthew 13:53-58
But without faith it is impossible to please
Him, for he who comes to God must
believe that He is,
and that He is a rewarder
of those who diligently seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6
David praises God for redemption from
the Pit
I waited patiently for the Lord; And He
inclined to me, And heard my cry.
He also brought me up
out of a horrible pit,
Psalm 40: 1-5
Out of the miry clay, And
set my feet upon a rock, And established
my steps. He has put a new song in my
mouth—
Psalm 40: 1-5
Praise to our God; Many
will see it and fear, And
will trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40: 1-5
“Depression is real
and, like it or not, it oftentimes stems
from sinful choices and
consequences.

Let's mention this first before citing
other legitimate causes that are not
necessarily sin-related.
Larry Tomczak
This is critical because too often
commentators and counselors
attribute suicide only to external
causes—
Larry Tomczak
things that happen to us or come
upon us instead of connecting them to
our own wrong choices and sinful
reactions.
Larry Tomczak
The cumulative effects
of persistently violating God's holy
standards
can result
Larry Tomczak
result in people being crushed and
bitter,
then blaming God
for their fate.

"When a man's folly brings his way to
ruin, his heart rages against the Lord"
Proverbs 19:3
“Prescription-drug use
has skyrocketed 300 percent in just 10
years!
Sin abounds bringing
STDs, aches, stress,

back problems, migraines and joint
maladies to multitudes who will
not obey a loving and
holy God.”

Blessed is he whose transgression is
forgiven, Whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does
not impute iniquity,
Psalm 32 :1-11
And in whose spirit there
is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones
grew old through my groaning all the day
long.
Psalm 32 :1-11
For day and night Your hand was heavy
upon me; My vitality was turned
into the drought of
summer. Selah
Psalm 32 :1-11
I acknowledged my sin to You, And my
iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will
confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
Psalm 32 :1-11
” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

For this cause everyone
who is godly shall pray to You in a time
when You may be found;
Psalm 32 :1-11
Surely in a flood of great waters they
shall not
come near him. You are
my hiding place; You shall preserve me
from trouble;
Psalm 32 :1-11
You shall surround me with songs of
deliverance. Selah I will instruct you
and teach you in the way you should go; I
will guide you with My eye.
Psalm 32 :1-11
Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding, Which
must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Psalm 32 :1-11
Else they will not come near you. Many
sorrows shall be to the wicked; But he who
trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround
him.
Psalm 32 :1-11
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you
righteous; And shout for joy, all
you upright in heart!

the troubled sea, when it cannot rest,
whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 'There
is no peace,' says
my God, 'for the wicked'"
Isaiah 57:20
"The wages of sin is death, but the free
gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ
our Lord"
Romans 6:23
Multitudes of deceived people need to be
helped in seeing that their problem of
depression is self-induced
and not something that mysteriously and
arbitrarily comes upon folks like
measles or the flu.
“A man was desperate and depressed. He
went to an old buddy who counseled him
to go and talk with a psychiatrist.
Larry Tomczak
He did but it brought no relief and
neither did
the meds. So the friend advised him to
invest in a therapist.
Larry Tomczak
He did but his money was running out and
the attempts at coping didn't deliver.
Finally his friend told him of a circus
Larry Tomczak
in a nearby town where there was a clown
who was hilarious and made everybody
laugh. The deflated man
Larry Tomczak
began to cry and when he looked up he
said, "I know that won't work because, you
see, I am that clown."
Larry Tomczak
Depression is not the root of the problem;
one of the roots is guilt and shame from
sin or sinful lifestyle.
When I kept silent, my bones grew old
Through my groaning all the day long. For
day and night
Psalm 32: 3-4
Your hand was heavy upon me; My
vitality
was turned into the drought of
summer.
Psalm 32: 3-4
For this cause everyone who is godly shall
pray to You In a time when You may be
found; Surely in a flood of great waters
They shall
not come near him.
Psalm 32:6-11
You are my hiding place; You shall
preserve me from trouble; You shall
surround me with songs of
deliverance. Selah
Psalm 32:6-11
I will instruct you and teach you in the
way
you should go; I will guide you with
My eye.
Psalm 32:6-11
Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding, Which
must be harnessed
Psalm 32:6-11
But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall
surround him. Be glad in the Lord and
rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy,
all you upright in heart!
Psalm 32:6-11
There is forgiveness, the release from sin
and guilt and the accompanying
depression that feels like being in a miry
pit. Instead of being downcast, there’s
gladness and rejoicing.
Another reason for depression:
I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I
have learned in whatever state I am, to be
content: I know how to be abased,
Psalm4:11-14
32:6-11
Philippians
and I know how to abound. Everywhere
and in all things I have learned both to be
full and to be hungry, both to abound and
to suffer need.
Psalm4:11-14
32:6-11
Philippians
I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.
Nevertheless you have done well that you
shared in my distress.
Psalm4:11-14
32:6-11
Philippians
David praised God for His continuous
love and mercy.
David gathered all the people together and
went to Rabbah, fought against it, and
took it. Then he took their king’s crown
from his head.
2 Samuel 12:29-30
Its weight was a talent of gold, with
precious stones. And it was set on David’s
head. Also he brought
out the spoil of the city in
great abundance.
2 Samuel 12:29-30
who crowns you with steadfast love
and mercy.
Psalm 103:4
David praised God for filling him with
good things.
He is good, and we can continue to
trust Him that He will be good to us
and satisfy our needs.
Hasn’t God been good to you? Hasn’t He
blessed you with many good things? Can’t
we praise Him for abundance of good
things in our lives. Count your blessings,
not what you don’t have.
What shall I render to the Lord For all
His benefits toward me? Ask yourself,
What can I do for You Lord because you
have been good to me?
