There is currently a part time Food Technician vacancy within the school. The salary scale for this post is Grade 14 on the Somerset Support Staff Pay Scale. The successful applicant would be contracted for 20 hours per week and for school term time only (38 weeks per annum). This represents an actual starting salary of £7,126 per annum. Hours of work are usually 9:00am to 2.30pm Monday to Thursday, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. In addition colleagues are required to attend Department and Full Staff meetings. The Food Technician post has a valuable role to play in enabling students in the classroom to succeed. The technician will ensure that resources and equipment are ready, maintained and purchased. You will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment, including cleaning/hygiene of specialist food technology rooms. Applicants should be practical, enthusiastic, flexible, demonstrate initiative, excellent communication skills, and attention to detail. It is also important that the successful candidate has access to transport for purchasing duties. The most important thing for our children is their safety. Duties: This job description describes in general terms the normal duties which the postholder will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the post. Main Responsibilities & Duties: • Preparation of resources for lessons to assist the teacher in delivery of curriculum. • Support teachers in the delivery of Food classes by maintaining equipment and appropriate resources. • Maintenance and cleaning of food equipment and rooms. • Provide classroom support to teachers and students. • Assist in developing new practical activities. • Monitor resources through stock control, including storage of materials, checking deliveries and advising on stock levels. • Making purchases for the Department. • Maintain inventories of equipment as appropriate. • Maintain a safe and tidy working environment in the classroom and preparation area. • Carry out minor routine repairs to tools and equipment going to external contractors for major repairs. • Carry out visual and other routine safety checks (Health & Safety) reporting any faults or concerns. • Routine work within defined procedures, no direct supervision of staff. Knowledge, Skills & Experience: • Food Hygiene certificate desirable but not essential. • Communication skills, creativity, prioritisation, organisational skills. • Previous relevant practical experience. • A working knowledge of ICT. Problem solving & Creativity: Closely controlled by Health & Safety legislation. Uses initiative and expertise to offer students alternatives to achieve their design criteria by creative use of resources. Decision Making: Within daily schedule prioritise own timetable. Deals with routine and minor maintenance and repair. Physical Effort & Working Conditions: Frequent physical effort, carrying, cleaning and frequent use of machines in school environment. Contacts & Relationships: Regular contact with members of staff, students and suppliers. Personal Qualities: Desirable personal qualities such as enthusiastic, flexible, demonstrate initiative, excellent communication and organisation skills; attention to detail; sense of humour; ability to work in a team and alone.
