TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 11, 2015
First Reading: Wisdom 7:7-11
This poem discusses how the spirit of wisdom is far more beautiful than any riches could be. All gold is no more than sand when compared to the importance of wisdom, which often leads people to the other good things in life.
Second Reading: Hebrews 4:12-13
God’s perception of people is called “sharper than any twoedged sword.” God is able to know the thoughts and feelings of all his people. We can hide nothing from him, and will need to account for all he has seen in us.
Gospel: Mark 10:17-30
A man asks Jesus how he can share in everlasting life. Jesus tells him to sell his possessions and travel with them. The man refuses and Jesus tells his disciples how difficult it is for a rich person to enter heaven if they are too concerned with their possessions. The disciples remind Jesus that they gave up everything for him, but he assures them they will be rewarded with everlasting life.

VOCATION DISCERNMENT GROUP
A Vocation Discernment Group Meeting is a wonderful opportunity to share how God is calling us to serve in His Church. Through prayer, experience, and a strong dedication to one’s spiritual life, discernment emerges as a gift from

GOING TO THE SEE POPE FRANCIS
Surprisingly, I received a ticket to see Pope Francis from Bishop Martin Holley, my former eighth grade student in a Catholic school down south, now an auxiliary bishop in Washington D.C. The bishop had tickets for his family and one extra ticket for me!
Did I want it? Yes.
After teaching E.S.L. class I took Amtrack’s train to Washington D.C I stayed overnight at ‘Washington Retreat House’ with the wonderful Atonement Sisters.
The following day I was off to the canonization of Junipero Serra, the first canonization in the U.S.A.! While waiting in long lines, I found myself beside a small boy and his mother from California. The seven year old had just awakened from a ten day coma after which a priest, using a relic of Junipero Serra, prayed over him and the child awakened. And so he came!
I was in row twenty-two, outdoors, in the midst of a variety of people of all cultural backgrounds, at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. For me it was a foretaste of Heaven. All of us together, happy, patiently waiting and glad to be together, with everyone smiling…cheering…singing…kneeling and praying. And Pope Francis glad to be with all of us – especially the children!
The next night, when I arrived home at midnight, the news on the radio had just finished and a jazz program was ready to begin. The announcer started with,
‘Somebody just asked me if I liked this Catholic pope. What is there not to like about him? He’s reminding us to ‘Do unto others, the Golden Rule, what is not to like about him?!’
