Whereas the Undergraduate Student Government represents all undergraduate students at The
Ohio State University, and
Whereas “1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol
related unintentional injuries”1, and
Whereas 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 receive unintentional injuries each
year while under the influence of alcohol2, and
Whereas Ohio House Bill 201 would create a Good Samaritan Policy for the State of Ohio, and
Whereas a Good Samaritan Policy would grant amnesty to underage persons who have been
drinking if the only reason underage drinking was discovered by a law enforcement officer was
due to a request for medical assistance or a request for law enforcement assistance, and
Whereas a study has shown that the passage of Good Samaritan policies increases the number of
requests for assistance, but not the number of alcohol related incidents3, and
Whereas The Ohio State University, Miami University, The University of Cincinnati, and many
other universities around the country currently have a Good Samaritan Policy in place, and
Whereas the passage of House Bill 201 would make off campus socializing safer for all
students;
Therefore, Let it Be Resolved that it is the opinion of the student body at The Ohio State
University that the Ohio General Assembly should enact House Bill 201.
