Summary:
This course is designed to educate students in the field of marketing. Topics include: basic principles of
marketing, sales, marketing management, financial statements, product/ service planning, branding,
distribution, promotion and presentation techniques. DECA, a student marketing association, is
incorporated as a part of the class. Students are required to take an active role in DECA events,
competitions and conferences. These provide students with the opportunity to travel and compete
against students from Washington and throughout the United States. DECA helps develop leadership
and communication skills used in the business industry. Professionalism is stressed throughout the
course and activities in which our chapter takes part in.
Make-up & Late Work
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to get the makeup work. Make-up/ Late work
should be turned in no longer than a calendar week after the assignment was assigned. If you were
absent, please write “absent’ on the top of the page to ensure no mistakes when grading. Late work
will follow the same rules but only receive half credit. Any work not turned in during this time period
will not be accepted!
Students will be graded on a point system consisting of:
 Unit Tests
 Quizzes
 Worksheets
 Presentations and Projects
o (market Id, branding, product sales)
 DECA Participation (2 parts)
o Competition: Area Competition, mock competition, –this is mandatory
o Leadership: Community service project events, various DECA events
 3 hours each semester is mandatory, additional volunteering will result
in extra credit. These have to be DECA organized events. Refer to
community service rules on Connect for additional information

 Extra Credit
o (ex. chapter activities, packets, community service / leadership DECA DRESS)
 40 points maximum per semester
Letter grades will be determined using a standard percentage evaluation as outlined below.

What is DECA?

The DECA program is a cooperative program which a mandatory part of classroom activities. It provides
you an opportunity to:
 join an organization where more than 180,000 students are serious about career and personal
growth.
 attend area, state, regional, and national competitions. (Area competition is mandatory)
 develop leadership skills by serving on committees and holding offices at chapter, area, state,
and national levels.
 elect DECA officers within our chapter to provide internal leadership.
 to become acquainted with community leaders through the chapter’s community service
projects.
 learn through hands-on experiences such as working in the school store and competition.
 conduct selling projects (fundraisers) to build revenue for our chapter.
$50 annual membership /class fee - if for any reason this is a concern please see me.
Rules of Conduct
Academic Dishonesty:
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, paper or project,
and followed up with disciplinary action. I have ZERO tolerance for cheating.
Basic Class Conduct:
1.) Be prepared and be courteous to those around you.
2.) Sign out when leaving the classroom.
3.) Respect all the property in the classroom (writing on desks /computers, leaving trash, pushing in
your chairs, putting away laptops properly).
4.) No cell phone use during class time. Music is okay during while working on assignments or tests
5.) No forming lines by the door at the end of class.
Consequences:
Any infraction during the course of this class will result in either a referral or detention after school.
Tech Prep College Connections Program:
This course is Tech Prep College Connections approved and articulated with Bellevue and Shoreline
Community Colleges. Students who demonstrate proficiency of the college course competencies with a
‘B’ (3.0) or better grade, may be eligible to earn college credit through the Tech Prep program. During
the (semester/year) all of the college competencies will be covered in class. Students must register
online using the statewide enrollment and reporting system http://sers.techprepwa.org and also are
required to pay a non-refundable $46 annual consortium fee to earn college credit through the Tech
Prep College Connections program (http://pay.techprepcc.org). Students MUST register for Tech Prep
college credit while they are enrolled in the high school course.
