Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
During this past week, we offered the Sacrament of
Reconciliation to each of our students. This is only possible
because of the generous time commitment of these priests from
both the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the Diocese of
Lafayette.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
If any of these priests are in your parish, please be sure to thank them for providing this Sacrament for our
students to begin their Advent preparation.

will be listed on their transcript. The two quarter grades and the semester exam grade comprise the semester
grade. Teachers will weight that final exam grade between 10 percent and 20 percent of the student’s semester
grade. Please check with each teacher to determine the individual policies.
All students are to take semester exams. Any absence from a final exam must be approved by Mrs. Ford, Vice
Principal for Academic Affairs. Missing a final exam may result in a temporary grade of “incomplete” which may
impact a student’s eligibility for co-curricular activities.

The next S.A.T prep class session will begin on Monday, January 23rd. The class will meet consecutive Mondays from
6:30-8:30 p.m. through March 5 which leads up to the March 10th testing date. There will be a class later in the spring as

lobrien@cathedral-irish.org
Our football team’s success in winning the 4A State Championship will be honored at our All-School
Mass on Thursday, December 8th. These student-athletes celebrated a Mass before every game and
prayed the rosary, so it is appropriate that they be honored on this Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Our liturgy will be from 9:33 – 11:00 a.m. in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center. If you are able to
join us, we would be delighted to have you do so!

Walking Safely on Ice
Walking to and from parking lots or between buildings at work during the winter requires special attention to avoid slipping
and falling. Slips and falls are some of the most frequent types of injuries that the Employee Safety Committee sees —
especially during the winter months.
No matter how well the snow and ice is removed from parking lots or sidewalks, pedestrians will still encounter some
slippery surfaces when walking outdoors in the winter. It is important for everyone to be constantly aware of these dangers
and to learn to walk safely on ice and slippery surfaces.
It is recommended to keep these important safety tips in mind:
Walking Over Ice







In cold temperatures, approach with caution and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy.
Dew or water vapor can freeze on cold surfaces, forming an extra-thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can look like
a wet spot on the pavement.
Walk in designated walkways as much as possible. Taking shortcuts over snow piles and other frozen areas can be
hazardous. Look ahead when you walk; a snow- or ice-covered sidewalk or driveway, especially if on a hill, may
require travel along its grassy edge for traction.
If you must walk in the street, walk against the flow of traffic, as close to the curb as you can.
Taking shortcuts through areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible can be hazardous. Try to avoid straying
from the beaten path.
Point your feet out slightly like a penguin! Spreading your feet out slightly
while walking on
ice increases your center of gravity.
Bend slightly and walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over the
feet as much as
possible.
Extend your arms out to your sides to maintain balance. Beware if you are
carrying a heavy
8






backpack or other load—your sense of balance will be off.
If you must carry a load, try not to carry too much; leave your hands and arms free to balance yourself.
Keep your hands out of your pockets. Hands in your pockets while walking decreases your center of gravity and
balance. You can help break your fall with your hands free if you do start to slip.
Watch where you are stepping and GO S-L-O-W-L-Y! This will help your reaction time to changes in traction.
When walking on steps, always use the hand railings and plant your feet firmly on each step.
Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles; use the vehicle for support.
Take short steps or shuffle for stability. It also helps to stop occasionally to break momentum.

Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can
learn more by visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.



Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
Important tuition assistance dates are as follows:
 November 1—Earliest date to apply for tuition assistance for 2012-2013 (http://sss.nais.org)
 December 31—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for incoming 9th graders (Class of 2016)
 February 15—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for returning students
Again, much more detail is available online at www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
Thank you,
Duane Emery, Vice President for Enrollment Management

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. Eph2:17. Our works in service
are prayers for peace as well. During our Advent season, we ask that “peace, peace is provided to the far and near.” Is
57:19b We ask for God’s healing grace and the love of Christ to bind together all that are plagued by economic, emotional
or spiritual division. We ask to be healed. We commit to our ability to reconcile to our neighbor and to be bonded to Christ
through our service for others.
Senior Service Hours Senior service hours are due now and service graduation requirements for all four years should be
complete. Heartwarming experiences are being reflected in their service work which is especially insightful.
Coat and Jeans Drive Next week we will host a coat and jeans drive on Thursday, Dec 8-Monday Dec 12. Bring in your
unused coats and jeans to the SLC to assist the homeless and underprivileged during the cold winter months. We will
deliver the coats on Dec 12 to the agencies helping the homeless.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Our
freshmen have supported the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Oct 12 with twelve bulging bags of toys and 750 pairs
of socks for families shopping at the Christmas Store in December. Most of the opportunities to assist families in December
shopping have been filled. We will not host a tasty spaghetti dinner in December for the sophomore class project as it
conflicts with exams; another group is graciously performing this for us. On Saturday, Dec 10 at the Cathedral Soup
Kitchen (10:30-1:30-juniors) juniors will be preparing a warm and toasty lunch, dialoging with the homeless, and passing out
scarves completed at the Service Festival. Students from Brosna-Kerry County will be joining us also. Our next Sophomore
class spaghetti dinner will be on Wed, January 11 (4:00 PM-7:30 PM). Thanks for your efforts to join us in these great
ministries. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities
Peru Mission Trip Further details about our fourth Peru mission trip are available on the website. We have asked that the
first trip deposit of $600 and your application be turned in by December 1 so that we can get some flights booked for our
travel. Many students are interested in the upcoming summer mission to Peru and the children’s home (Hogar) in
Chaclacayo. It is an enthralling opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure in Lima and Cuzco, Peru.
Over seventy five children are cared for by Dr. Tony Lazarra at the Hogar. For the application, click here.

Spring Break Mission Trip to South Carolina We will be having a meeting about the Spring Break mission
trip during Spring Break to Charleston, South Carolina on Thursday, Jan 5 at 3:30 in the SLC.
Come get the forms and a quick review of the trip.
Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are
current for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for
seniors are due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of
2011-12, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students
will be shown on their second quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours
earned after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project
basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service
performance. Click here to go directly to service opportunities on the web and for problems with

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

A confident student-athlete does not need to chest pound and showboat following an outstanding play during a game. Does
a good student brag and jump up and down when getting 100% on an exam?

Tom Brady, three-time Super Bowl winner and quarterback of the New England Patriots, said that his coach, Bill

Meditation: 7 Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me.” (Matthew 11:28)
25
You’re expecting a baby, and you worry about being a good parent. You’re a senior citizen, living someplace you’d
rather not and feeling useless and forgotten. Your arthritis is no joke.
You’re a stressed business professional. You seize on all the latest technology to get better connected and more
efficient. But often, faced with a slew of e-mail, voicemail, texts, tweets, postings, podcasts, and “friend” requests,
you feel weary.
You’ve been unemployed for nearly two years. At night you wake up and wonder, “Will we lose the house?” You
made a hard decision that cost you some friends. It was the right thing to do, and you don’t regret your stand. But
it’s a lonely place to be.
So many types of burdens, so much stress—we could all add our own examples to the list. So, too, could the people
who first heard Jesus’ invitation in today’s Gospel. As a group, they were weighed down by the heavy yoke of religious
extras imposed by the scribes and Pharisees who had made the Mosaic law an insufferable burden. They lived under the
thumb of the Roman Empire too, and eked out a living as best they could. And as individuals, they labored under their own
particular mix of the burdens we know only too well: sickness, fear, sin, guilt, difficult relationships, or addictions.
So take a few minutes and in your imagination join this weary, needy crowd. Picture yourself there among them with your
own burdens. See the look of love on the face of Jesus as his gaze sweeps over you.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That’s you he is speaking to.
He knows your problems and your struggles, your suffering and your stress. And he wants to give you rest and relief by
drawing you into his presence. That’s the mission he was born for.
So come to Jesus often this Advent. Turn off your phone, computer, and anxious thoughts. Create a quiet space where you
can speak to him from the heart. Then be still—and receive the Christmas gift of himself.
“Jesus, I come to you. Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Blessings,
