Course Description:
This course is aligned with Arizona College and Career Ready Standards and Arizona Department of Education Career and Technical Education
Program Standards - Information Technology – Web Page Development Option D (1-20) and supports school-wide efforts to increase student
achievement. (Yearlong Course - 1 Credit). This course is designed to give the student an overview of computer technology, terminology, and use
by exploring their role in society. Students will participate in hands-on exercises using business software (word processing, spreadsheet, database,
and presentation software) and apply these skills to real world activities. The students will gain a working knowledge of the World Wide Web and its
resources through hands-on experience with various Internet communication, resource discovery, and information retrieval tools. Programming in
the form of web page development will allow the students a foundation from which to explore different careers in information technology. The
students will examine social and ethical issues related to computers, and explore emerging technologies. This course is the prerequisite course for
Advanced Information Technology.
Course Objectives: By the time the student completes this course of study, the student will know or be able to:

11.0 ─ Administer internet/intranet sites
12.0 ─ Differentiate between popular client-side and server-side programming languages and terms
13.0 ─ Create html pages using an html editor
14.0 ─ Identify appropriate use of various multimedia extensions, plugging and image, and multimedia formats
15.0 ─ Identify and explain common formats used to deliver content and popular tools to connect a web server to a database

The materials and equipment used in the class need to be handled appropriately and students will be responsible for lost, broken, stolen,
vandalized or misused equipment/materials.
Have Integrity. Integrity has been defined as: “how you act when no one is looking”. Any instances of cheating will be dealt with according to
MRHS rules. Cheating includes: plagiarism (using another’s words without giving credit to the author), ANY giving or receiving of answers
to/from another student, copying of work, projects or assignments, and using answers during an exam.

MRHS School Policy: No extra credit or late work!
Report Cards: In an effort to conserve resources and harness the capacity of our electronic grade reporting program (PowerSchool)
district schools will no longer print hard copies of report cards unless requested by individual parents. To request a hard copy of your
student’s report card, please contact the front office at 623-376-3000. To receive your PowerSchool login, please stop into the office
with a valid photo ID.
Power School Online Access: Grades and attendance may be accessed 24 hours a day online with your Power School access code.
Access codes are available in the Counseling Office or Front Desk Monday – Friday 7:00 AM– 3:30 PM. You may check student
progress regularly on the PowerSchool site using the same login for one or more students. For Mountain Ridge parents/guardians
without home computer access, a computer with guest log-in capability is available in the Counseling Conference Room.
Academic Assistance/Office Hours: In addition to the Academic Prep times built into our schedule each week, additional
assistance/tutoring is provided on a weekly basis both by MRHS and individually by instructors. These office hours will be posted in the
classroom and/or on my website at the start of each week. I will demonstrate to the students how to find my availability each week. I
also encourage your son/daughter to write down my availability each week in their Mountain Ridge planner (provided by the school) so
that you, too, are aware of my weekly availability.
Absences: After an absence, a student has one school day for each day missed to make up work/tests, regardless of the number of days absent. If
many days were missed, please schedule an appointment with me to formulate a plan for the completion of make-up work. Make-up work for
extended absences (over 3 days) may be requested through the Counseling Office and picked up there.
Retake Policy/Procedure: Every student has the ability to re-take one major test per semester with proof of remediation as determined by the
teacher. You may re-take this exam during at an arranged time after school within one week. On the exam, you must indicate that this will be a retake exam. The original score and the re-take score will be averaged together for your new exam score. If you fail to arrive at the arranged time,
you will forfeit your right to take this exam.
Make-up Policy: This class will have lots of classroom demonstration activities and group/cooperative learning. Labs are usually held after school
at least once a week. Students need to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT with their teacher to attend a lab to do make up work. For cooperative learning
and in class activities, an alternate assignment may be assigned. Written assignments may be assigned for these types of class activities that are
missed. The assignment will be determined at the teacher’s discretion. Any discussion about make up work must be done at the end of the class
period or after school.
Long Term Project Policy: Long Term Projects are due on the date and time assigned, as defined in writing in advance by the teacher. NO
EXCEPTIONS. This supersedes the make-up policy. If the student is absent from the class or the class does not meet that day, the project is still
due on the day assigned
Daily Device Use (iPads)
Students should come to school with their iPads charged and ready to use in each class every day. Within each classroom, there are three possible
technology environments. Teachers will identify for students the environment expected during their class period. These environments are described
below:
Red: No device use allowed. Devices are to be off and put away. If a device is out and being used at this time, students may receive
disciplinary consequences and/or zeroes if appropriate. This environment may be necessary for testing or non-electronic based assessments.
Black: Limited device use allowed. Students may use devices in accordance with teacher instruction in a prescribed manner. Students
may be asked to place devices face down on their desk until appropriate to use. Teachers may ask to see students’ open apps and require that all
apps are closed with the exception of a specific one or two. Games should not be open in this environment unless the teacher indicates a specific
game may be used.
Green: Open device use. Students may use their device independently to take notes, complete assignments, conduct research,
communicate with the teacher, check grades, and other appropriate educational uses of the device. Students should not access inappropriate
content or cause disruption in this environment.
Devices may not be used to record or take photos of other people without their consent. Consequences for classroom disruptions and misuse of
devices will follow a progressive discipline model, beginning with a phone call home and progressing to office referrals for repeated or more serious
offenses. Students who have devices out during a Red environment or during testing, may lose credit on their test or quiz. See the Student Rights
and Responsibilities consequence chart in the handbook for more specific descriptions of infractions and consequences.
Recommended Supplies for this Course: Pen/pencil, paper and a good attitude. Here is a basic list of things that I would be very thankful to have

Students enrolled in Information Technology agree to abide by all rules listed in the Deer Valley Unified School District “Internet and Email User Agreement/Permission Form”. Failure to abide by these rules may result in revoked access to your log in. If this occurs,
students will be unable to complete the assignments/tasks required on the computer in DVUSD labs. Students will NOT be provided
another students or the teachers log-in to participate in the course. Students need to use their own personal log in and make sure that
they log out properly prior to leaving class to avoid data loss and/or other inappropriate use of their log in.
