SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP - LEADING FROM A SANCTIFIED HEART By L. Roo McKenzie, Ed.D. Education Evangelist, SECC Covenant Consulting Concepts STRATEGIC DESIGN OF THIS WEBINAR Solution-Focused Leadership (SFL) Harvard Business Model (HBM) What is the problem? Why is the problem? What are the solution options? What will we do? Abilene Paradox HYPOTHESIS – DIFFERENTIATED LEADERSHIP** There is a significant difference (the margin of excellence) between the leadership style and outcomes of those who lead from a sanctified heart and those who lead from an ego-centered heart. (David and Saul, Elijah and Jezebel, John and Judas) “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him” (II Chron. 16:9) Spiritual leadership is not self-emergent. It needs a trigger (conversion, humility, integrity & sincerity) to ignite it THINK ON THESE THINGS SOLUTION-FOCUSED LEADERSHIP The world will be an amazingly better place when the power of love replaces the love of power Pathology of Power: Since the fall man, we have sought independence from God’s control, as though we were gods ourselves, and could control our own destiny. CHALLENGE: LEAD FROM A HEART OF LOVE Only God has the perfect balance of love and power. In humans, there is an inverse relationship between love and power: the more love one has the less power he desires and displays, and the more power one desires and has, the less love he displays. LEADERSHIP REALITY “We can’t lead someone else to the light while we are standing in the dark.” “Dead hearts cannot revive cold hearts.” “A leader ought to be sincere, whether he means it or not.” SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP: FIRST THINGS FIRST EZRA – A man of Priorities plus! “Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation, and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the MORNING and EVENING sacrifices.” (Ezra 3:3) The ALTAR will ALTER your past, present, and future. AUTHENTIC LIVING & SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP CPA- CERTIFIED PRIVATE/PUBLIC APOSTLE KFC – KNOWN FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST H I T •Humility: A sacred garment that can be worn with any outfit (“The sweetest, lovliest flower…”) •When worn as under and outer wear, it will leave you naked of pride, ego, and selfish ambition •Integrity: With or without integrity, nothing else matters • Integrity and transparency are twin brothers •Teachability: Willingness to learn, trainable, pliable • When we cease learning, we also cease growing A SHIP, AN ICEBERG AND A LEADER “OUR LEADERSHIP BOAT FLOATS NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT IS SEEN, BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT IS NOT SEEN.” ROOISM II The Outer/Upper Show The Inner Core The Under Anchor THE NEHEMIAH MODEL OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP The Nehemiah Moment: A vision born of God becomes a moral imperative Before he undertook to build the wall, he built his life spiritually Nehemiah served an heathen king with integrity*** (He was a man of the inner core) Nehemiah was serving in enemy territory When he heard the report of the state of Jerusalem, he went into action immediately – Prayer (Neh. 1:5) Prayer is an acknowledgement of man’s inadequacy and God’s sufficiency “PRAYER-WORKS” IGNITE HEAVEN’S FIREWORKS! “If My people who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (II Chron. 7:14) Man’s Part: Humble and pray Seek and pray Turn and pray God’s Part: Hear and forgive Heal their land – that healing is all-inclusive LEADING THROUGH PRAYER: MOTHER THERESA’S PRAYER Dearest Lord, May I see You today and everyday in the person of each patient, and whilst nursing them, minister unto You. Though You hide yourself behind the unattractive disguise of the difficult patient, the irritable, exacting, and unreasonable; May I still recognize You and say, “Jesus, my patient, how sweet it is to serve You.” Lord, give me this seeing faith. Then my work will never be monotonous. I will find joy in humoring the fancies and gratifying the wishes of my patients. MOTHER THERESA’S PRAYER O, beloved patient, how doubly dear you are to me, when you personify Christ. And what a privilege is mine to be allowed to serve You. Sweetest Lord, make me appreciative of the dignity of my vocation and its responsibilities. Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way to coldness, unkindness, impatience. And O God, while You are Jesus my patient Deign also to be to me a patient Jesus, Bearing with my faults, looking only to my intention MOTHER THERESA’S PRAYER Which is to love and serve You, in the person of Your sick. Lord, increase my faith, and bless my efforts, and my work, now and forevermore. Amen! Jabez: “O that You would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain. And the Lord answered His request.” (IChron. 4:9/10) SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP IMPERATIVES God Personal Transparency Grace Compassion Courage NEHEMIAH’S MODEL OF: LIVING YOUR LEADERSHIP Courage: Obstacles can make us work smarter and live wiser Compassion: He never demanded (5:18) Transparency: spiritual leadership is a glass house Grace: Nehemiah found grace in the king’s eyes “O Lord, God of Heaven” THE DNA OF NEHEMIAH’S MODEL OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP Prayer: Counselor Prayer: Fuel Prayer: Weapon THE CONCLUSION: SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP VS. “EGO-SHIPPING” Spiritual leadership is not something you do. It is something You are! If you doubt that there is a significant difference between the life and outcomes of spiritual leadership, take a moment to compare the life of David and Saul, Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (I Peter 5:5). First Prayer of Nehemiah: Neh. 1: 5-11 LET’S DO IT! “JUST DO IT!” “WHATEVER HAPPENS, CONDUCT YOURSELVES IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.” PHI. 1:27 Align talk & walk • Align profession and practice • U R the gospel!
