AT 243 Ankle/Foot Taping Packet You are receiving a series of proficiencies that you have gone over in AT 243 Taping Lab. On top of each page you will see a spot for your name as well as a brief description of the task you are to perform. You will then see a check-off box; you are to demonstrate everything that you can to the athletic training student (ATS) or ACI/CI. In order to pass on a proficiency you need to score an 80% or higher. If you do not score an 80% or higher on your first attempt, you will be given a second attempt. If you still do not score an 80% you will be given an average of the two scores and asked to repeat the skill with the course instructor. Your grade is calculated by adding up the total number of points for each skill and the total number of points you receive on each skill. At the end of the semester you will receive this grade out of all the points for all skills in the course. If you get these signed off by an ACI/CI (any staff member) you must sign up for a time in the appointment book. You may not walk into the athletic training room and ask to do these. The ACI/CI has every right to remove you from the athletic training room if this is the case. DO NOT show up late for your appointment, two late appointments and that ACI/CI will not see you anymore! If you are getting these signed off by an ATS make sure they have time to delegate to you. *No late work is accepted-no questions asked-you will receive a zero for all skills* This specific packet is Due:________________________ 1 Taping/Wrapping Name:___________________________________ Closed basket weave taping. Tester places athlete and limb in appropriate Seated, leg supported in full extension Ankle/foot plantarflexed about 25 degrees Taping Technique Places heel/lace pad over the dorsal ankle joint (distal Achilles’ tendon) Places anchor around the proximal gastrocnemius and around the instep of foot Measures a strip of elastic tape slightly longer than the distance between the two anchors and cuts both ends of the strip about 1 inch longitudinally With one end of the strip, wraps the split under the plantar side of the foot Pulls the strip up, pulling foot into plantarflexion and attaches it to the proximal anchor by wrapping the split ends of the strip around the gastrocnemius Secures both ends of the elastic strip with an anchor strip Closes the tape job with either elastic or adhesive tape from distal to proximal Support and Neatness Limits excessive dorsiflexion Checks circulation to the foot No holes or loose ends 1st attempt: ___________/12 Yes No 2nd attempt:__________/12 Student Signature:___________________________________________________________ ATS/ACI/CI Signature and date:_____________________________________________________ 4 Name:_______________________________ Arch Taping. Please demonstrate how you would tape the longitudinal arch to give added support to the involved bones, ligaments and muscles. You have 3 minutes to complete this task. Tester Places Athlete and limb in appropriate position Seated, leg supported in full extension Ankle/foot slightly plantarflexed Taping Technique Place an anchor at the head of the metatarsals Begins at the medial head (first metatarsal); attaches a strip of tape beginning at the medial aspect of the foot, around the heel and diagonally along the plantar surface of the foot Repeat step above Makes a teardrop beginning on the plantar side of the 3rd metatarsal head, back around the heel, and returns to starting point Repeats above step Places the tape on the plantar side of the 5th metatarsal head and draws the tape diagonally across the foot to the medial side of the heel, around the heel, and back to the lateral head of the 5th metatarsal. Repeats above step Places tape strips along the plantar surface of the foot, pulling the tape from lateral to medial, beginning distally and moving proximally; each strip overlapping by half of the width of the tape Places tape around the heads of the metatarsals to anchor Support and Neatness Provides support to the longitudinal arch Checks circulation to the foot/toes No holes and/or loose ends 1st attempt: ___________/14 Yes No 2nd attempt:__________/14 Student Signature:___________________________________________________________ ATS/ACI/CI Signature and date:_____________________________________________________ 5 Name:________________________________ Turf toe taping.
