FEBRUARY 10th – 16th 2016 2016 BERKELEY COMPETITIVE TRAVEL TRIP Travel to the United States with LearningLeaders teammates and coaches. Compete in an elite debate competition with the best and brightest in the U.S. Expand your horizons with local culture trips in San Francisco. LearningLeaders – All Rights Reserved - 3/23/16 1 EVENT SUMMARY LearningLeaders wants to continually expose members of the Shanghai debate community to learning opportunities of the highest quality. Sixteen LearningLeaders students will have the opportunity to travel to San Francisco, California for one week to compete in a debate and public speaking competition, the 2016 California Invitational. The California Invitational is in its 43rd year of competition and is one of the most prestigious and popular debate events in the U.S. More information on the event here: http://calinvitational.com/ PARTICIPANTS As the California Invitational is a selective competitive tournament, coaches will select the team that will best represent our program and Shanghai. Thus, the application below, debate experience, and past results of competitors will be the most important determinant in team selection. Additional factors in the team selection process may be tenure with the program, age, and future potential development. At the event, students will compete in teams, though for the purposes of this application, they should apply individually. LearningLeaders – All Rights Reserved - 3/23/16 2 COMPETITION and EVENTS LearningLeaders students will register for TWO events, both Public Forum Debate and one individual event (Impromptu, Original Oratory, or others). In this way, students can gain more experience and improve skills in both debate as well as solo speaking. Students are guaranteed 6 debates in preliminary rounds as well as multiple rounds in individual events. TRAINING Students who are accepted to the 2016 Berkeley Travel Team are encouraged to attend either a three-day intensive preparation camp from December 18-20 or February 4-6. These camps will be open to other students in addition to the Travel Team, though the focus on these camps will be on competition preparation. These camps are at an additional cost but discounted for those traveling to UC Berkeley. Each three-day preparation camp will include 12 hours of coaching and training, specifically geared towards the 2016 Berkeley Competitive Travel Trip. The camp tuition is RMB 1500 for Travel Team Members and RMB 2500 for other students. Lunch and snack are included within the tuition. At the end of the First Round Applications, if there are still open spaces. By submitting one’s name for consideration, the student and family is committing to the event and will travel if selected. Students can see application details at the conclusion of this document. EVENT ENROLLMENT The total cost of participation in UC Berkeley Debate Trip is RMB 8500 plus additional fees for transportation. This tuition includes hotels, tournament entry into multiple events, judge fees, and also covers the cost of coaches traveling with the team. This enrollment fee also covers the cost of meals while on the trip, though will not cover other shopping or entertainment. SAFETY AND TRAVEL While traveling, safety of our students is of the highest priority. Students will always be with coaches throughout the course of the trip. Once students are accepted onto the Travel Team, we will request three forms: a Memorandum of Understanding, a Student Consent Form, and a Medical Form. Only after successful applications will the forms be required. LearningLeaders – All Rights Reserved - 3/23/16 5 Memorandum of Understanding All traveling students and families will be required to have a school representative sign a memorandum of understanding, indicating the school is aware of this travel and any missed days of school. Student Consent and Medical Form All traveling students and families will be required to sign a Student Consent Form and Medical Form. The Student Consent form absolves Learning Leaders of any liability while the student is traveling and the Medical Form lists allergies and relevant contacts in case of medical emergency. Passports and Visas All traveling students and families will be required to prepare their own passports, visas, and travel documents. Learning Leaders is not responsible for any difficulties incurred while traveling due to passport issues.
