I use internet when I research about these topics to The New York Times. And I made a table that about compare and contrast the two findings. Next, I explain how to this findings contribute to human progress which is helpful to general health. Finally, I choose the genetic mutation contribute better than other findings. Introduction This essay is made for compare and contrasts the two scientific discoveries for distinguishing the scientific advances for human between finding good cholesterol which is called HDL and finding a fish which adapt to PCBs by genetic mutation. Before I research these two topics I had a stereotype that cholesterol is no way to helpful for human health and genetic mutation is always harmful for organism except microorganism. This scientific found should be helpful for human society such as, people don’t keep aloof the food which involve cholesterol even content is very small and the other predicted effect is scientist will find out that genetic mutation can be helpful for people. Methodology Process a) I decided the two topics. b) I researched on the internet to finding scientific discovery. c) Compare between the two scientific advances d) Choose which one was better. 7/19/2012 page 1 GAC013 AE2 Song Yong Sung HUK21984 Data collection methods a) Internet A. Site 1 – New York Times Addressing the Research Purpose A. New York Times – 1. Genetic mutation give help to tomcod to survive. 2. Tomcod didn’t affected to PCBs 3. HDL may lower the disease risk 4. HDL may have no relationship that make better to heart disease. Findings A genetic mutation allows Hudson River fish to adapt to PCBs. Genetic mutation is not always harmful. It also can give helps to organism. It can solve that surviving the extremely rough environments. ‘Good cholesterol’ structure identified could help explain protective effects. Cholesterol is not always harmful to human health. This discovery can be the solution the many kinds of disease. Which part of science does it belong to and why? Biochemistry and genetics. Health science, biology and biochemistry. When and by who was it discovered? NYUS of Medicine scientist found out at 2/18/2011 UC researchers found out at 13/3/2011 Topic Aspects to be examined What is the scientific advance? Which issue does it address Provide a historical perspective what was the previous strategy for dealing with the issue? What is the contribution of the scientific advance to human progress? Similarities People found out just basic information like appearance. And can survive the rough circumstance-So they didn't eat the tomcod. Genetic mutation can be helpful for people that making to survive wherever the location is. People think all cholesterol is harmful. So, they didn't eat the foods which have lots of cholesterol. This discovery give helps to human health such as, heart disease. These two discoveries related to health science. Also, people stereotype is changed. Finding timing was similar. Table 1: result of compare and contrast the two topics. 7/19/2012 page 2 GAC013 AE2 Song Yong Sung HUK21984 This table shows some question which can show the compares and contrast. Generally, I contrast and compare about the how this scientific findings can affect to human progress as a good way. Also, what the people thinking were before found out these scientific findings. Lastly, I also tried to find out the similarities between Hudson River fish and Good cholesterol. Discussion The reason why tomcod can survive to Hudson River which polluted by PCBs is the extremely bad environment occurred the genetic mutation to tomcod which is changing the gene called ARH2 which can control the toxic. Before scientist found out this fish, people think in Hudson River, there are no fish because of PCBs. After people found out, they start to avoid. But the New York University School of Medicine scientists want to know why they can survive. So, they found it. This discovery gives the genetic mutation is not always bad things, it can be good way. For example, we can make genetic mutation artificially so, people who live in bad environment can adapt to that region. Also, this can help the solution of disease. Such as, people who have disease because genetic mutation can be treated by this discovery. According to UC researchers, this discovery which is found out high-density lipoprotein (HDL) that is called good cholesterol can also be helpful to human health. Especially, disease which is related to heart, cardiovascular and stroke can be preventing by high number of HDL. Because, HDL have lots of HDL and Apo lipoprotein A-I. Before UC researchers found out the HDL, people think cholesterol is always giving bad influence. After this, people thinking change. But, according to The New York Times, HDL might be no influence to cardiovascular disease. Only little part of molecular of HDL can affect to heart disease. Also, trial which taking medicine that giving help to improve the HDL level stopped. Because of there are no improvements about cardiovascular. However, this scientific finding still can give good influence to making the medicine of diseases especially, cardiovascular, heart and cardiovascular disease. Although, The New York Times said HDL might be no relationship between heart disease and HDL, it’s not clearly identified yet. So, there are still finding the good influence to human society. 7/19/2012 page 3 GAC013 AE2 Song Yong Sung HUK21984 Conclusions and Recommendations After the compare and contrast the two discoveries, finding a genetic mutation allows Hudson River fish to adapt to PCBs is better finding. Because, other discovery is that help only specific part of human. But finding about genetic mutation is help all over the human society. 7/19/2012 page 4 GAC013 AE2 Song Yong Sung HUK21984 Reference Kolata, Gina. “Doubt Cast on the ‘Good’ in ‘Good Cholesterol’.” The New York Times.
