Chapter 2 Study Guide
Organic Chemistry
I.
Macromolecules (Section 3 from textbook)
1. What element composes all organic compounds?
2. What is a macromolecule?
3. Four major macromolecules: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids
4. For each of the above organic compound, you will need to know what elements they are composed of, their
building blocks (monomers), characteristics, examples and their importance for living things (Purpose)
5. What does –saccharide mean? Mono-? Di-? Poly?
6. Examples for monosaccharides; disaccharides; polysaccharides
7. Naming of sugars!! (They all end with –ose)
8. Identify macromolecule’s via their structural formulas
**Review the quiz
II.
Enzymes (Section 4 from textbook)
1. Define it; Do not forget that the enzyme is a protein!!!
2. What is a substrate?
3. How do you name enzymes?
4. Compare and contrast endothermic and exothermic reaction; identify them via their graphs
5. Identify the enzyme’s optimum temperature and/or pH by observing a graph
6. CRACKER ACTIVITY!!! Understand why did the cracker tested positive for a polysaccharide before the
chewing and positive for a monosaccharide after the chewing – what was going on?
III.
Macromolecules Lab – Know the indicators used!!
1. Starch Test: Iodine color?
2. Protein Test: Biuret Reagent color?
3. Sugar Test: Benedict’s Solution and Heat color?
4. Lipid: Lipid Test Strips color?
