3 types of Colonies
1. Charter – (Connecticut, Rhode Island)
• Group of settlers given a charter
2. Proprietary (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania)
• Individuals given a charter – free to rule as they pleased
3. Royal Colonies (Georgia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
New Jersey, New York, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Virginia)
• Directly ruled by Britain – king appointed a governor
Govt (in general)
• Limited government (Magna Carta 1215)
• Representative Government – (white, male, land owners)

• Subsistence farming – produce enough for family’s
needs -• Small business – towns attracted skilled workers
(blacksmiths, furniture makers, printers…)
• Ship Building – lumber and rivers to move it around
