Transfer Committee Meeting Minutes September 16, 2014 Counseling Conference Room – SS Building 1pm – 3:00pm Present: Jack Moy (Aviation) Rudy Treviso (Aviation) Dawn Castillo (TRIO-SSS) Andrea Frederic (TH Counseling) Sherron Rouzan (Chair of Counseling) Walter Jones (Dean of Academic Affairs) Janise White (HFA – Music) Mohammed Alwash (Math) Colleen Matsuhara (PE) Matt Robertson (Math) Helen Young (Transfer Center & Honors Director) Meeting called to order at 1:00pm Approval of minutes for 5/2014 by Frederic and Jones Approval of the agenda for 9/16/2014 by Frederic and Jones DISCUSSION ITEMS: Transfer Center Directors Report: The Fall Transfer Fair took place on Monday September 15th 2014 with over 50 representatives from institutions across the state of California as well as the U.S. The transfer Fair was moved to the CE/Lieffer Mall area due to the extreme heat. A variety of activities were included during the event including giveaways in addition our traditional transfer passport was used to encourage students to visit various tables and speak with University reps. A survey of satisfaction was sent to the representatives to determine how the event was viewed by the reps. It's estimated that approximately 100 students picked up transfer passports and return them to our office. Fall 2014 transfer workshops will take place throughout the semester. Variety of topics including the following will be covered; transfer general overview, CSU & IGETC review, UC application, CSU application, common application, personal statement, California private and out-of state institutions, transfer for AB 540 students, transcript tune-up for transfer, TAG workshops. Flyers have gone out to faculty the e-mail as well as information will be posted on the transfer website regarding the workshops. Transfer center will work with the Student Equity Group to secure funding to sponsor a bus visit to several Northern California institutions. The committee members discussed the process for including students are taking students… An application and interview possibly in addition a deposit or waitlist may be established. If the student does not attend after making a commitment they will be unable to sign up the following event. Transfer honors report includes a returning 58 students to the program for the follow 2014. With approximately 9 completed in the program for this 2013-14. For the spring 14 term 84 contracts were received from approximately 48 students with the following completions; 68 completed successfully, 69 completions and 10 no response from faculty member to confirm. Thus far we've received eight applications for fall 2014. Four additional applications were received but rejected due to not meeting all of criteria for selection. The deadline to apply for fall of 2014 is October 13, 2014. All contracts for the transfer honors program will be due no later than October 31, 2014. Next item is transfer data internal; provided the committee members with the internal data report that was compiled at the end of spring 2014; As of 7/1/14 the following - total of 64 respondents (Students) with the following breakdowns 16 students to CSU Dominguez Hills, nine students to CSU Los Angeles, five students to CSU Northridge, 12 students to UCLA, to students to UC Irvine, for students to CSU Long Beach. In addition numbers were reported for UCLA (end of spring 2014 – fall 2014 start) which provided a four-year look for applicants, admits and enrolled based on major ethnicity and TAP and non-TAP applicants. Also provided report for UC Berkeley with a three year look which included total laps fall admits spring admits fault S IR's and spring S IR's. Articulation Report: Adriana Martinez - No Report SSS report – Dawn Castillo – No Report Transfer center plan – fall action items The committee reviewed the priority activities for fall 2014 in the Transfer Center Plan for 20142015. Discussion took place about how to address some of these priority activities. #1 on the priority activity list – committee discussed sending out e-mails to campaign an open house week that would include food and snacks. For item #4 on the activity list suggest that during late October or first of November maybe arrange for guest speakers, workshops and faculty to speak to student. For item #10 on the list – will include the need in program review to secure full-time transfer counselor. Item # 14 maybe there could be a prize connected if a suggested item is used. Committee member Walter Jones suggested that a possible tailgate type activity could be organized were students will be able to talk with the faculty of various alums. There was this discussion about the electronic board for information and to continue to work to determine if the electronic boards might be usable to advertise information. Jack Moy from the aviation department: Aviation Program has had an articulation agreement with Cal State University LA for BS program in aviation. There is consistently a long list of students waiting to enter the program- the wait is 1 ½ year. The faculty of the aviation program often suggests to students to take the GE's while they wait. There is a limit to 25 students per class in the labs lecture can hold more however the last cannot. 88 students 10% are women there's been a large redirect of students due to the Long Beach closure. Aviation modules 1 & 2 are the only entry points for the program at this time when previously a student wouldn't have been able to drop in at any point. They must complete math 115 or higher to be eligible based on necessary skill level. There was discussion about the transfer committee submitting a position paper to ensure that the SSSP plan included an effort to increase transfer by providing resources. Meeting adjourned at 3pm hpy
