THE
Of myHISTORY
music genre;
Hip hop is a musical genre which developed alongside hip hop culture, defined by key stylistic elements such as rapping,
DJing, sampling, scratching and beatboxing. Hip hop began in the Bronx of New York City in the 1970s, primarily among African
Americans, Jamaican Americans, and, to an extent, Latino American The term rap is often used synonymously with hip hop, but
hip hop denotes the practices of an entire subculture. The roots of hip hop are found in African-American music and ultimately
African music. The griots of West Africa are a group of travelling singers and poets who are part of an oral tradition dating back
hundreds of years. Their vocal style is similar to that of rappers. The African-American traditions of signifyin', the dozens, and
jazz poetry are all descended from the griots. In addition, musical 'comedy' acts such as Rudy Ray Moore and Blowfly are
considered by some to be the forefathers of rap.
Within New York City, griot-like performances of poetry and music by artists such as The Last Poets, Gil Scott Heron and Jalal
Mansur Nuriddin had a significant impact on the post-civil rights era culture of the 1960s and 1970s.
In the early 1970s, the cultural movement of hip hop music was born. Hip
hop's fast paced music style is made of two parts; the rhythmic delivery
of rap and the use of instrumentation by a DJ. Hip hop music also
brought with it a fashion of its own, the fashion helped to represent this
newly created music.
Hip hop music has its roots from West African music and AfricanAmerican music.

Rhythm and blues, often shortened to R&B, is a genre of popular African American music that originated in the 1940s. The
name was initially used by record companies to express recordings marketed mostly to urban African Americans, at a time when
"urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming much more popular.
Contemporary R&B (or Rhythm and Baseline, also known as simply R&B) is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop
and R&B.
Contemporary R&B has a polished record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat
to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B songs prior to the year 1993), and a smooth, lush style of vocal
arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasing trend in contemporary R&B, and the use of hip hop-inspired beats
are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out. Contemporary R&B vocalists
are often known for their use of melisma, popularized by vocalists such as Mariah Carey.
Popular R&B artists are as followed:
Babyface
Boyz || Men
Whitney Houston
Ne-Yo
Keith Sweat

Keri Lynn Hilson (born December 5,1982) is an American recording artist signed to Zone 4, Mosley Music Group and Interscope

songs for multiple rappers and singers, including Britney Spears and Ludacris. In 2007, she guest performed on Timbaland's hits
"The Way I Are" and "Scream" and began a solo singing career. Hilson has made cameos in music videos for Usher, Ne-Yo and
Nelly, amongst others. Her debut album, In a Perfect World…, was released in early 2009, spawning hit singles "Energy,"

Christopher Maurice "Chris" Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American recording artist and
actor. He made his recording debut in late 2005 with the self-titled album Chris Brown at the age of

In the 1990s, Mariah Carey's career originated in quiet storm, with great singles such as "Vision of Love" which was
released in 1990, and "Love Takes Time" (1990) Also in the early 1990s, Whitney Houston's quiet storm hit included
"All the Man That I Need" (1990) and "I Will Always Love You" (1992). Richard J. Ripani wrote that Carey and
Houston, "both of whom rely heavily on the gospel music vocal tradition, display an emphasis on melisma that
increased in R&B generally over the 1980s and 1990s." Carey's "Vision of Love" is considered to be an extreme
example of the use of melisma. Also during the early 1990s, Boyz II Men re-popularized classic soul-inspired vocal
harmonies. Michael Jackson incorporated new jack swing into his 1991 album Dangerous, with sales over 32
million.
In contrast to the works of Boyz II Men, Babyface and similar artists, other R&B artists from this same period began
adding even more of a hip hop sound to their work. The synthesizer-heavy rhythm tracks of new jack swing was
replaced by grittier East Coast hip hop-inspired backing tracks, resulting in a genre labelled hip hop soul by producer
Sean Combs. The style became less popular by the end of the 1990s, but later experienced a resurgence.
During the mid 1990s, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, TLC, SWV and Boyz II Men brought contemporary R&B to the
mainstream. Jackson's self-titled fifth studio album Janet. (1993), which came after her historic multi-million dollar
contract with Virgin Records, sold over ten million copies worldwide. Boyz II Men and Carey recorded several
Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits, including "Fantasy", "One Sweet Day", a collaboration between both acts, which became
the longest-running #1 hit in Hot 100 history. Carey, Boyz II Men and TLC released albums in 1994 and 1995—
Daydream, II , and CrazySexyCool respectively — that sold over ten million copies, earning them diamond RIAA
certification.
AndAUDIENCE
Fans of my music genre
An audience is a group of people who participate in a show or encounter a work of art, literature (in which they are
called the "reader"), theatre, music or academics in any medium. Audience members participate in different ways in
different kinds of art; some events invite overt audience participation and others allowing only modest clapping and
criticism and reception.
My audience will consist mostly of Black people, because it is their kind of music and it did originate from African
American people, but I am not saying that that’s the only nationality that listen to Hip-Hop and R&B music.
A fan is someone who really likes something or someone most likely a celebrity in music or film.
SUB-GENRES
Of my music genre
The term R&B today defines a style of African-American music, originating after the demise of disco in 1980, that combines
elements of soul music, funk music, pop music, and (after 1986) hip-hop in the form known as contemporary R&B. In this context
only the abbreviation "R&B" is used, not the full expression. Sometimes referred to as "urban contemporary" (the name of the
radio format that plays hip-hop and R&B music) or "urban pop“
rhythm and blues was the predecessor to rockabilly and rock and roll. It was strongly influenced by jazz and jump music as
well as black gospel music, and influenced jazz in return (hard bop was the product of the influence of rhythm and blues,
blues, and gospel music on bebop) and African tribal beats. The first rock and roll consisted of rhythm and blues songs like
"Rocket 88" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" making an appearance on the popular music charts as well as the R&B charts.
"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On",
Hip-hop music is a celebration of diversity. If you find that no two MCs sound alike, it's because their musical styling are
products of different environments and attitudes. The alternative hip-hop movement encompasses MCs who constantly
colour outside the lines. These artists are less concerned with pop hooks and dance moves. Their main objective is to push
the envelope and explore unique concepts.
RECORD
LABELS
For my music
genre
Bad Boy Records (originally Bad Boy Entertainment) is a record label, dealing largely in Hip-Hop/R&B music,
founded by producer/rapper/entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs in 1993. Today it operates as a subsidiary of
Warner Music Group, and is distributed by Atlantic Records.
B-Boy Records was an important independent hip hop record label formed by Jack Allen and Bill Kamarra in 1986, and situated
at 132nd Street and Cypress Avenue in the Bronx, New York City. Its most notable signing was Boogie Down Productions. B-Boy
released Boogie Down Productions' first singles, "South Bronx" (1986) and "The Bridge is Over" (1987), and their landmark debut
album, Criminal Minded (1987). Other acts released by the label include JVC Force, Cold Crush Brothers, Levi 167 and Jewel T.
The label's output is a mix of new names and old pioneers, and documents a period in which self-assertive lyrics begin to detail
street life even as the music moves from hardcore drum-machine-based tracks to the horns and drum sounds of sampler-based
hip hop.
Def Jam Recordings is an American hip-hop record label, owned by Universal Music Group, and operates as a
part of The Island Def Jam Music Group. In the UK, the label takes on the name Def Jam UK and is operated
through Mercury Music Group, while in Japan, it is Def Jam Japan operating through Universal Sigma Music.
Konvict Muzik is a record label founded by Melvin Brown[and R&B singer Akon. Other than Akon, there are
popular artists such as Kardinal Offishall, Kat DeLuna, Rock City, American Yard and Brick & Lace signed to
the label. At the beginning of most Konvict Muzik artists' songs there is the sound of the clank of a jail cell,
followed by Akon uttering "Konvict". Akon started his own label after the success of his debut album. T-Pain
released three albums under the label, two of them achieving gold status.
Akon recently signed a deal with Columbia Records and Epic Records for new artists signed to Konvict.
