LAKES HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL MUSIC
“Quality Musical Experiences in a Caring Environment”
Benjamin T. Keller, director
Benjamin T. Keller came to Lakes High School in the fall of 1987 as Director of Choral
Activities and Music Department Coordinator. At Lakes he conducts over 200 students in six
choral classes. He holds the Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Music degrees
from Pacific Lutheran University and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a major in
Choral Conducting and a minor in Music Education from the University of Arizona. He has
studied conducting with Maurice Skones, Jerry Kracht, Edward Harmic, John Bloom, Eric
Ericson, Bruce Browne, Wilber Elliott, Weston Noble, Geoffrey Boers, and Richard Nace. He
has studied voice with Edward Harmic, William Sare, David Majoros, Jerold Siena, Sam
Smith, and Grayson Hirst, and music theory/history with Joseph Schwantner, Vicki King,
Calvin Knapp, David Robbins, David Dahl, John Boe, and Edward Murphy.
Dr. Keller has wide experience in all aspects of choral music, having directed church
choirs and taught music on all levels for over forty years. He directed the Gloriana
Chamber Singers, a semi-professional choral group in Tacoma, for five seasons. At
both Arizona and Pacific Lutheran Universities he directed choirs. His groups have
consistently received superior ratings at contests and festivals.
The Concert Choir has commissioned and premiered major choral works by wellknown composers. Credo (1997) by Richard Nance, in three movements for mixed
chorus, soprano soloist, oboe and percussion, became the cornerstone for his entire
Mass for a New Millenium (2000). An extended work by well-known composer Donna
Gartman Schultz, There Was a Time, set for mixed chorus, piano, and tuba soloist,
was premiered at the 2006 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA)
Northwest Division Convention in Portland. The Concert Choir performed again at
the ACDA convention in March of 2010 at Town Hall in Seattle, the most recent of
several performances at state and regional conferences of ACDA, National
Association for Music Education (NAfME),and the American Guild of Organists
National Convention.
Lakes choirs have performed across the United States in such venues as Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts and Washington National Cathedral in Washington
D.C., Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Davies War Memorial Symphony Hall, St. Ignatius
Church and St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, Libby Gardner and Maurice
Abravanel Halls in Salt Lake City, Meany Hall and St. James Cathedral in Seattle,
Pantages and Lagerquist Halls in Tacoma, Cathedral of the Holy Rosary and St.
Andrew's-Wesley Church in Vancouver, B.C., and Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C.
Over the years the choirs have appeared on television, performing in the holiday
special The Gift of Music and on Lakewood’s episode of the series Our Town. The
Concert Choir has performed as featured guest artists with the Tacoma Symphony
Orchestra in their Sounds of the Season concerts. In March of 2010 the Lakes
Concert and Studio Chamber Choirs collaborated with the Tacoma Symphony
Chorus in their Bridges of Song outreach program to the arts in public schools.

TOUR NOTES AND EXPECTATIONS
ROBE PROCEDURES
1.
Long hair must be put up or pulled back to prevent hair oils from staining the stoles and
robes; and to minimize visual distractions.
2.
Never sit on your robe as velvet crushes and wrinkles very easily. ALWAYS place care
above convenience.
3.
Protect your stoles from dropping off onto the ground where they can be damaged
beyond repair or lost.
4.
Big jewelry such as rings, earrings, watches must not be worn in performance.
5.
Avoid perfumes, colognes, and scented hair spray as some (including the director) are
allergic to them.
6.
We will use the bags and racks for the robes. The Robe Crew will be in charge of
transporting the robes.
7.
On Thursdy May 21 prior to departure, robe bags and racks will be prepared at Lakes
for the tour.
ATTIRE

Whenever the itinerary specifies, the choir shirts must
be worn along with jeans or other casual wear. Please
avoid torn jeans, holes and “sagging”.

GUIDELINES FOR A GREAT TIME
1.
Backpacks must not be brought into any performance hall, chapel, or venue. Leave
them in the hotel as storage will likely be impossible and “home rooms” are not
available for choirs.
2.
Portable music players and wireless phones on tour are fine, but NEVER during a
performance or listening situation.
3.
Friends and relatives in the Vancouver area may come and visit you at the hotel, and
all of our performances are open to anyone. However, you will not be released to go
visiting in the Vancouver area for safety and security reasons. No exceptions will be
made; please don’t ask.
4.
In the hotel please be aware that we are not the only guests on any floor. Quiet
In the halls will be strictly enforced. NO CALLS to the front desk from non-LHS hotel
guests is the acceptable outcome because we were quiet and courteous.
MEALS
1.
BREAKFASTS: Saturday and Sunday hot buffet in the hotel - no cost.
3.
LUNCHES: Friday lunch: fast food and/or grocery stop. Saturday lunch is on you ownbrown-bag from items purchased earlier or late at Grouse Mountain. Sunday lunch plan

4.
DINNERS: Friday dinner is at The Old Spaghetti Factory at no cost. Saturday dinner is
a barbecue picnic-style at Playland at PNE, at no cost. We will not be stopping for
dinner on Sunday so plan on eating at home after we return.
5.
SUMMARY: 3 meals to purchase @ average $8 - $10 per meal (assuming avoidance
of room service and hotel restaurants) = $24 - $30. The cost can vary greatly
depending on individual tastes and eating habits, and whether or not you use room
service, hotel restaurants, or fast food restaurants.
6.
AVOID ROOM SERVICE AND HOTEL RESTAURANTS
The room refigerators (if any) may be stocked with items such as soda and candy bars
as well as other food. IF YOU USE IT, YOU PAY FOR IT and it will be far more
expensive. Don’t fall for this money trap!!!!!!!
