Part 1:
Magritte, Le pelerine
In part one, we see how the idea of killing someone has changed him since his time at the
University. When he was in the University he had money and was able to afford to eat. After he lost his
money he was no longer able to pay for food; an idea that he had once overheard came to his mind. As
he processed this idea we can see the split between his old personality and the one that is obsessed about
becoming an extraordinary man. As you can see in the painting above you can see the split in the person
as his head, and mind, move away from the body. While thinking about whether he should complete the
murders you can see how he may of used to acted when he helped the girl on the street. Also we see the
separations of his actions and his thinking at the time of the murder; when he was no longer thinking and
he was just acting.
Chapter 1
“Hm… yes … a man holds the fate of the world in his two hands, and yet, simply because he is afraid,
he just lets things drift-that is truism… I wonder what men are most afraid of …any new departure, and
especially a new world- that is what they fear most of all…But I am talking too much.”(pg. 1-2)
We meet a young man who is living in St. Petersburg in a very small flat. His name is
Raskolnikov. As he is leaving his flat he is very nervous about running into his land lady because he
owes her money for rent. Raskolnikov has fallen into a depression, he does not talk to anyone anymore
and keeps to himself while walking on the street.. As he walks the streets he tries not to be noticed and
talks to himself, he feels if he is noticed, people will know what he thinking of doing. He is thinking
about doing a terrible act; he has not been able to think about anything else for months and today he is
going to investigate the location of the act. He considers himself unable to do the act if he can’t even
face his landlady. Raskolnikov wears very tattered clothes, and over the last month has grown very
disturbed. Today he is out to perform his dress rehearsal for the act. As he walks into the pawnbrokers
building he notices that the owners of the flat next to hers are moving out and it will be empty. He has
brought her a small watch to pawn. He accepts the little money that he would get remembering that he
was there was for another reason as well. He was careful to watch her while she put the money and the
pledge away and where she kept her keys. He also asks about the routine of her sister Lizaveta. He
leaves and is disgusted with himself, so he goes to a tavern and has a beer and feels much better
afterwards.
Chapter 2
“He shall come and ask: where is the daughter who gave herself for a harsh consumptive stepmother and
the compassion to that filthy drunkard, her earthly father, and did not shrink from his beastliness? And
he will say: come unto me! I have already forgiven thee… I have forgiven thee…thy sins, which are
many, are forgiven for thou didst love much.”(pg. 19)
Inside the tavern Raskolnikov meets a man who is a civil servant and has been drunk for a good
five days. His name is Marmeladov, and he begins to tell Raskolnikov about his family and his life. He
is married to Katerina Ivanovna who is a proud and strong woman. She only married him because she
was left with three children after a bad first marriage which caused her to be disowned from her family.
She has been very ill for quite some time and was beaten up last month by Lebezyatnikov. He also tells
of his daughter Sonya who has been forced to become a prostitute to make money for the family because
Marmeladov cannot keep a job. He feels terrible for what his Sonya has to do because the landlady
made her move away. Marmeladov has not been home in five days but he allows Raskolnikov to take
him home. When he gets home Katerina hits him and yells at him for taking all of the money and
spending it on drinking. Raskolnikov leaves, while he is leaving he leaves the rest of his money for the
family.
Chapter 3
“You must love your sister Dunya, Rodya love her as she loves you-and her love for you is boundless;
she loves you more than herself. She is an angel, Rodya and you-you are everything to us; all our hope
trust is in you. If only you are happy we shall be happy too.”(pg. 33)
The next morning Raskolnikov is woken by Nastasya bringing him some soup, bread, and a
letter from his mother. His mother has written about what has happened to his sister while working as a
governess on an estate. The owner of the estate, Svidrigaylov, had fallen in love with Dunya and this
had upset his wife very much. Dunya had taken an advance so she had to stay to pay off her debt. But
one day Mara Petronva had enough and said Dunya had to go and went all over town telling everyone
what had happened. Later Svidrigaylov show his wife a letter that showed it was all his fault. She went
to Dunya and apologized and told everyone town what happened. Soon after the mistake, Luzhin came
to ask for Dunya hand in marriage. Dunya and her mother discussed the proposal and decide to allow
Luzhin to marry Dunya. They are coming to St. Petersburg because Luzhin had business to do there.
Chapter 4
“There look, she’s quite drunk; she has just come along the boulevard; Heaven knows who she is, but
she can hardly be a professional. More likely somebody made her drunk and abused her…do you
understand me?...for the first time…and then turned her out into the street like this.”(pg. 40)
He leaves his apartment and goes for a walk. He has decided that he will not let his sister marry
this man. As he was walking on the street he sees a girl staggering around and looking for somewhere
to sit; she finds a bench and sits down. He sees a man that is following her and goes up to confront this
man and get into a fight with him, a policeman comes and breaks up the fight. Raskolnikov tells the
policeman that he thinks the girl was given alcohol until she was drunk and then she was abused. The
policeman tries to get the girl to talk but can’t then he goes running off after the man who was following
her. As Raskolnikov continues walking he questions why he had to get involved with that girl in the
first place. In this chapter we are shown Raskolnikov’s softer side of his personality because of the way
he helped that girl.
Chapter 5
“The poor little boy was quite beside himself. He pushed his way, shrieking, through the crowd to the
mare, put his arms round the dead muzzle dabbled with blood and kissed the poor eyes and mouth…then
he sprang up and rushed furiously at Mikola with his fists clenched. At the moment caught him up and
carried him out of the crowd.”(pg.50)
Raskolnikov was heading to meet with his old friend Razumikhin when he decided to not visit
him. Instead he fell asleep in a grassy area; while he is asleep he has a dream about a childhood
experience. He watches a group of peasants beat up a horse because the horse was not able to pull all
these people in a cart. The horse was trying to pull the people and they would just keep hitting her with
the whip. Soon the horse fell over and everyone began to beat the horse with whatever they had. They
were using sticks and crowbars and finally the horse died. Then the little boy ran over to the horse and
hugged the horse while it laid there dying, the boy’s father came and picked him up and carried him
away from there. Raskolnikov wakes with a shock and is worried about what he is about to do. On his
way home he walks through the hay market while he is walking home he sees Lizaveta in the market
and she is speaking to a tradesman and telling him that she would come and see him tomorrow to buy
something around eight o’clock. This is Raskolnikov’s chance he will go and kill her tomorrow.
Chapter 6
“He had not to many preparations to make. He was straining every nerve to take everything into
consideration and let nothing slip his memory, and his heart thumped so heavily that he could scarcely
breathe.”(pg. 58)
They flashback to when Raskolnikov first came up with the idea to kill the pawn broker. He had
learned of her from a fellow student and decided to go see her to pawn something. Later that night he
overheard a conversation in a bar. Two students were complaining about how she is unfair and has all
of this money. They consider killing her to get her money but say they would never do it. At first
Raskolnikov would never consider doing that to someone and was repulsed by the idea. But as time
goes on and he has more and more money troubles he decided that maybe he should do it. Back in the
present Raskolnikov has fallen asleep and didn’t wake till the next evening. It was already past six
o’clock and he had some preparing to do. He needs to sew a loop on the inside of his coat to hold the
axe. He also had to prepare a fake pledge to give to her. He went to the caretaker’s house and stole an
axe as he was leaving his house. He was careful to make sure that no one sees him. He leaves and
makes it to her boarding house and is outside her door ringing her bell.
Chapter 7
“The terror that possessed him had been growing greater and greater, especially after this second
unpremeditated murder. He wanted to get away as quickly as possible. If he had been in a condition to
exercise a soberer judgment and see things more clearly, if he could only have recognized all the
difficulty of his position and how desperate.”(pg. 68)
The pawnbroker opens her door to a very nervous Raskolnikov. She let him into the apartment
and asked to see the pledge. While she was looking at the pledge he pulled out the axe and hits with the
blunt end of the axe. After several hits she was dead; he took the keys from her pocket and went to her
dresser unlocked it and was looking for the any money or pledges. While he was looking he heard the
door open. It was Lizaveta, he went out picked up the axe and hit her with the sharp end. He realizes
the door to the apartment has been open the whole time; he goes and closes it and locks the door. Two
men come to the door trying to get inside. They leave to go get the porter and he sneaks out to hide in
the empty apartment. Then he leaves the building and goes and returns the axe and then falls asleep.
Part 2:
Munch, the Scream
In part two, we see the immediate aftermath of the murders when he feels the most venerable.
Every moment he feels like he is going to be caught. He even considers confessing at one moment.
This stress causes him to get ill and go into a derlium. He was so nervous of what he had said in his
delirium and continued to think that his friend had found out about what he had done. The painting
represents the screaming and worrying that he was going through in his whole part. He goes through all
of this just screaming for no one to find out and then switching back to hoping for someone to find out
and then he would be out of this stress. In the painting he may be screaming because of fear, but I think
Raskolnikov is screaming because of the stress of keeping the secret and the fear of being found out.
Chapter 1
“A strange idea flashed into his mind: he would get up, go over to Nikodimfomich and tell him all that
had happened the day before, down to the last detail, and then go back with them to his room and show
them the things in the corner, under the wallpaper. The impulse was so strong that he stood up to carry
it out.” (pg. 88)
Raskolnikov wakes up and frantically searches his clothes for any traces of blood. He thinks he
finds some on the bottom of his pants and he tears it away and throws the piece in the stove. Then he
finds the thing that he stole from the pawnbroker. He hid this thing in a hole in his wall that is covered
with the wallpaper. He thinks that he has already been caught and is starting to lose his mind and not
know what to do. Around noon the porter and Nastasya come in and gave him a note that said he has to
go to the police station. As he goes to the station he is very nerves and thinks he has been caught.
When he arrives there he finds out that his landlady has reported him because of his large amount of
debt. He starts to argue with them about the charge. Later he hears a detective talking about the
murders and he faints. When he wakes up they are asking him questions about the murder because of
his reaction. He leaves felling like the police suspect him because of his reaction.
Chapter 2
“It’s because I am very ill, he morsosely decided at last; I have been tormenting and torturing myself,
and I hardly know what I am doing…Yesterday, and the day before, and all this time, I have been
tormenting myself…when I am well…I shall not torture myself like this…but if I never get quite well
again?” (pg. 93)
Raskolnikov returns to his apartment and gets the things he stole from the hole and goes for a
walk. As he was walking he considers what he can do to get rid of the things that he stole. He thought
of throwing them in the river but instead he buried them in a courtyard under a rock. He wonders why
he has committed the murders if he just hid the things without even using any of the money help
himself. He decides to go and visit Razumikhin: Razumikhin worries about his friend’s health because
of his big change from when he last saw. He tries to give him a job of translating a book from German
to Russian. Raskolnikov leaves angry that his friend thought that he needs help. He wonders around
and by eight o’clock he makes it home. He falls into a deep sleep; while he is sleeping he dreams that a
detective came and beat up his landlady. He wakes the next day and Nastasya tells him that he dreamed
that the land lady was beat up.
Chapter 3
“He seemed to have clean forgotten. Oh Lord, tell me just one thing; do they know everything or not?
What if they know it all already and were only pretending ,mocking me while I lay here, and what if
they come in now and say that they have known everything for a long time, and they were only…?
What shall I do now? I’ve forgotten! I knew a moment ago, but now it’s gone. “(pg. 107)
Raskolnikov starts to have hallucinations and sleeps for days. Later he wakes up and Nastasya,
Razumikhin, and a stranger where there. He learned that while he was sleeping, Zamyotov, a detective,
had stopped by to see him. Razumikhin had gotten Raskolnikov a doctor who was helping him and said
that he was in sick because of something that was bothering him in his mind. They made sure that he
got something to eat and that he was ok. The stranger was there to deliver money from his mother and
as soon as he accepted it he left. Raskolnikov is worried about what he had said in his sleep. They tell
him that he was looking for his sock and that someone gave him one and held on to for days. He also
asked about the ends of his pants but they could not find those. Everyone has decided to leave and give
him time to go back a sleep. Razumikhin took some of his money to buy Raskolnikov some new
clothes. This only annoys Raskolnikov and he tells him to leave.
Chapter 4
“Raskolnikov turned to the wall, selected one of the white flowers, with little brown lines on them, on
the yellowish paper, and begin to count how many petals it had, how many serrations on each petal and
how many brown lines. He felt arms and legs grown numb as if they were no longer there. He did not
stir, but look fixedly at the flower.” (pg. 114)
Zossimov, Raskolnikov’s doctor enters and speaks to Razumikhin about how well Raskolnikov
is doing since he woke up. Razumikhin has just moved and is having a house warming party and invites
Zossimov to the party, he accepts. Raskolnikov does not want to go to the party because Zamyotov will
be there and he is worried about what he has said to him while he was in his delirium. His friends start
discussing the murders. There has been arrest of a painter that was painting the other apartment;
Razumikhin is trying to clear his name. The painter was found to have some earrings that had been
pawned to the woman. Raskolnikov hid in that apartment and must have dropped them now he feels a
little relived and sad about what has happened to this innocent man. Razumikhin is arguing that the
painter found them because the real murderer had dropped them on his way out of the building. During
this conversation Raskolnikov just stares at the wall trying not to think about what they are talking about
and just keeping an open mind. As they finish their conversation a stranger comes to the door.
Chapter 5
“Is it true, broke in Raskolnikov again, in a voice trembling with fury, with an undertone of pleasure and
being insulting, is it true that you told your fiancé, at the very time when you had received her consent,
that your greatest reason for rejoicing…was that she was poor…because it is better to take a wife out
poverty, so that you can dominate over her afterwards…and reproach her with the benefits you have
heaped on her…?” (pg. 129)
The strange man who enters the apartment is Luzhin, Dunya’s fiancée. Luzhin immediately does
not like Razumikhin because he is so friendly. He looks over Raskolnikov and sees that he is ill and
very dirty and looks disgusted at him. Raskolnikov openly dislikes him by ignoring him; Luzhin has
difficulty trying to overcome this and ends up making himself look like a fool. He starts a conversation
with Razumikhin about the many new progressive ideas to impress both Raskolnikov and Razumikhin.
But it does not and they both treat him very coldly. The conversation turns back to the murder and
Razumikhin say that the murder was done by an amateur because he left all the money there and just
took a few of the pledges. In another attempt to sound smart Luzhin makes a comment about the
murders. Razumikhin used this opportunity to attack his ideas. Then Raskolnikov had enough and
starts to argue with Luzhin about why he said that it was better to take a wife out of poverty and bring
her up. Luzhin is very offend by this and leaves immediately. Raskolnikov angrily throw out the rest of
his friends; on their way out Zossimov says to Razumikhin that Raskolnikov gets very angry when they
talk about the murders.
Chapter 6
“Dear me, how strange you are! Repeated Zametov, very seriously. I think you must still be delirious.
Delirious? That’s a lie, cock-sparrow!... so I’m strange, am I? But you’re very curious about me, yes,
very.” (pg. 137)
As soon as they left Raskolnikov got up and got dressed in his new clothes. He hurried out of his
apartment and started walking around the city. He enters the crystal palace and orders some tea and the
newspaper from the last few days. Then he sees the police inspector Zamyotov and he comes over.
Raskolnikov starts teasing him about the murders and just crime in general. He claims to know a great
deal about these things. Raskolnikov goes as far to say how he would commit the murder. He almost
confesses to the murder; which makes Zamyotov very suspicious. Raskolnikov leaves in a hurry, and he
runs into Razumikhin and they argue because he left without telling anyone and they think that he is still
sick. In a last effort Razumikhin ask him to come to his house warming party. Raskolnikov does not
want to go and just yells for his friend to leave. He continues walking and ends up at the pawnbroker’s
apartment. There are two men in there cleaning; he goes in and asks the men where the blood is. The
men are looking at him like he is crazy. He realizes what he is doing and leaves. Walking along the
street he sees a crowd gathering in the street and goes to see what has happened.
Chapter 7
“ Sonya Daughter! Forgive me! He cried , and tried to stretch out his hand towards her, but without its
support he fell and crashed down headlong from the sofa ; they rushed to lift him up, and laid him
down again, but he was going. Sonya uttered a feeble cry, ran forward, put her arms round him, and
almost swooned in that embrace. He died in her arms.”(pg.159)
Raskolnikov see that the drunken Marmeladov has been ran over by a carriage. He is seriously
injured. After he tells the police who he is he tells them to get a doctor and takes him back to his
apartment. Katerina tries to care for him but a doctor tells them that he is going to die. Katerina
forgives him for what he has done to her. Sonya comes in and see that her father is about to die. He
tells her that he is sorry, and she comes and holds him and he dies in her arms. Raskolnikov gives some
of his money to Katerina to pay for the funeral. Raskolnikov asks Polechka to pray for him.
Raskolnikov went to visit Razumikhin at his house warming party. Razumikhin is very drunk and tells
Zossimov that he think Raskolnikov is mad. Raskolnikov becomes sick again and him and Razumikhin
takes him back to his apartment and they find Dunya and his mother there waiting for Raskolnikov.
They are both very worried about his condition after they hear what has happened from Nastasya.
Raskolnikov collapses and Razumikhin volunteers to take care of him.
Part 3:
Caravaggio, the Denial of St. Peter
In part three, we see the main conversation with Porfriy and how Raskolnikov deals with what
Porfriy is implying about his character. The stress of the conversation takes a toll on Raskolnikov and
causes him to have to go home and rest. As you can see in the painting the officer accusing someone of
something is staring him straight in the face and keeping eye contact. In crime and punishment Porfriy
does not lose eye contact with Raskolnikov. This brings him off his game and he was unable to think as
clearly as before. There also the clear denial of any accusation that Porfriy brought up against
Raskolnikov. As the title suggest the Denial of St. Peter .he gives two key denial throughout the
conversation with Porfriy. He denies the painters were there on the day of the murder and that he thinks
he is extraordinary man. Just as the woman denies St. Peter. It also shows the manipulation that he tries
to get the woman to tell him about Saint Peter.
Chapter 1
“ Dunya , went on Raskolnikov with an effort, I will not have this marriage, and so, tomorrow, the first
words you say to Luzhin must be to dismiss him. Then we need never so much as speak of him
again.”(pg. 167)
Raskolnikov is annoyed with his sister and mother and orders them to leave his apartment. He
tells Dunya that she has to break the engagement with Luzhin tomorrow. They will not leave until
Razumikhin promises to come to their room and tell what is going on with Raskolnikov. He will also
have the doctor come and see him and then go and see them. They agree and let Razumikhin walk them
to their room. When they get to the room Razumikhin promises that he will be back in a half of an hour
to give then an update and he will bring the doctor with him. Razumikhin tells Dunya that Luzhin is
unworthy of her. After going back to check on Raskolnikov he returns to the women and gives them an
update that he was sleeping. He then leaves and goes get the doctor. Zossimov comes back, who is
happy to relieve their fears about Raskolnikov. He believes that Raskolnikov is suffering from some
sort of obsession. On the way home Razumikhin and Zossimov argued about who gets to like Dunya.
Chapter 2
“I never could understand his nature, even when he was only fifteen years old. I am convinced that he
might suddenly do something with himself now that no other man would think of doing.”(pg.183)
The next day Razumikhin wakes with regret at what he has said to Dunya. He thinks that his
feelings for Dunya are absurd, but he dresses with extra care before he goes and sees Dunya and her
mother. Razumikhin goes and meets with Dunya and her mother at their room. He tells them about
what Raskolnikov was doing at university, and the little he knows of what he was doing since he left the
university. He remains pretty calm through the conversation but does end up letting his feelings for
Dunya to slip out again. Dunya shows him a letter that they received from Luzhin. The letter tells them
that Raskolnikov gave his money away to Sonya instead of Katerina and hints to Sonya’s degrading job.
It also says that Luzhin would like to meet with them but he would not have the meeting if Raskolnikov
was there. Dunya worries that the family will never be able to get along with each other and what to do
at the meeting. They decide to not listen to Luzhin and have Raskolnikov at the meeting any way. They
are leaving the women’s room to go and see Raskolnikov.
Chapter 3
“Dunechka had already decided , and I fully agree with her, Pulkheria Alexandrova hastened to say. I
decided to request you, Rodya, to urge you, not you fail to be with us at this meeting, said Dunya. Will
you come? Yes, I will come. And I will ask you to come at eight o’clock as well, she said Turing to
Razumikhin.”(pg.199)
They reach Raskolnikov’s apartment and Zossimov is there; he tells them that Raskolnikov’s
condition is improving. Raskolnikov apologizes to his friend and family for being rude to them and
telling them to leave. Raskolnikov tells them that he gave the money to Katerina instead of Sonya and
they forgive him for trying to help. He tries to tell Dunya that she should not marry Luzhin because it
would be dirty. She tells him that she knows what she is doing and is willing to make the sacrifice to
better the family’s status. She goes so far as to say that she is not guilty of death. This cause
Raskolnikov to faint because he believes that they have found out what he has done. Dunya has a plan
to test Luzhin. She shows Raskolnikov the letter that he sent and they discuss its meaning. He has
written it in a very formal and business-like manner, which shows how he treats this relationship. Part
of her plan is to invite Raskolnikov and Razumikhin to the meeting to have them there to see how he
interacts with her, at the very end of their conversation someone comes to the door.
Chapter 4
“ She asks you to do us the honor of being at the church tomorrow for the funeral, and afterwards at her
home for the dinner.”(pg.201)
It is Sonya at the door; Raskolnikov invites in and tell her to have a seat with the ladies. He
introduces her to his mother, sister, and Razumikhin. Sonya has come on the behalf of Katerina to ask
Raskolnikov to come to the funeral and dinner in honor of Marmeladov. He accepts her invitation and
his mother and sister politely leave. Sonya is shocked by Raskolnikov poverty which makes her unsure
why he would give so much of his little money away. Raskolnikov has a small conversation with
Sonya. Raskolnikov talks to Razumikhin about going to see Porfiry to talk about the things that he
pawned to the pawnbroker. They decide to go to Profiry to give his statement about his items. On the
way there Raskolnikov teases Razumikhin about him liking Dunya.
Chapter 5
“ The only difference is that I do not in the least insist that the extraordinary people are absolutely bound
and obliged to commit offences on any and every occasion, as you say I do. I hardly think any such
article would have been allowed to be published. I simply intimate that the extraordinary man has the
right…I don’t mean a formal, official right, but he has the right in himself, to permit his conscience to
overstep…certain obstacles, but only in the event that his ideas requi’sre it for their fulfillment.”(pg.
219-220)
Raskolnikov and Razumikhin are walking into Porfiry home office laughing and having a good
time. Raskolnikov is trying to remain calm and confident but is worried when he sees that Zamyotov is
there. They come in and knock over a table. Razumikhin told Porfiry about Raskolnikov uneasiness of
the murder trial. They discuss that Raskolnikov is the last person to come and all he need is to write up
a short statement. He starts to discuss his wandering of the night before. He feels as if Profiry is very
suspicious of him and that makes him nervous. Porfiry tells them about an article that Raskolnikov was
published in the newspaper a few months ago. They began a deep discussion of the extraordinary man
theory that was hinted at in the article.
Chapter 6
“Any man with even a scrap of intelligence or experience will be sure to try to admit, as far as possible,
all material facts that cannot be avoided; only he will look for other reason for them, turn them to reveal
special and unexpected facets, which will give them a different meaning, and place them in a new
light.”(Pg.228-229)
Razumikhin and Raskolnikov argue about if the police suspect him to be the murder.
Raskolnikov think that they do and it worries him very much. They both soon agree that they do suspect
Raskolnikov of committing the crime. As they arrive at Raskolnikov’s apartment and the porter tells
him that someone was looking for him. Raskolnikov follows him down the street and the man whispers
murderer to him. This upsets Raskolnikov and he returns home and ends up falling asleep. He also has
a terrible dream about the murder that caused him to wake up with a start. When he wakes up there is a
stranger waiting for him in his room.
Part 4:
Chierici, ll Desinare Della Vedova
In part four, Raskolnikov deals with all the issues with his family and his sister’s possible
marriage to Luzhin. Throughout this part we hear the offer from Svidgailov and break up with Luzhin.
Also he becomes closer to Sonya and shares a special bond in their joint suffering from their sins. The
painting shows to possible stress that happen when you are dealing with your family. As you can see in
the painting the woman looks extremely stressed and worried about all of her children just like
Raskolnikov’s mother. Also this can represent how Katerina feels when she is worried about feeding
her children. Also there is no father in the photo which represents the absence of one from both
families. Also you can see the daughter is studying which would be a way to better her life. This is also
seen with Dunya when she decides to marry Luzhin to better her family situation.
Chapter 1
“I should like to have an interview with Avdotya Romanova, and tell her firstly that her association with
Mr. Luzhin will not only be of any advantage to her but will probably bring her definite harm. Then
after begging her forgiveness for all the recent unpleasantness, I should ask permission to offer her ten
thousand robles and thus make easier the break with Mr. Luzhin, a break from which I am sure herself
would not be averse if only appeared possible.”(pg. 246)
Svidrgailov comes to see Raskolnikov to ask in his help in getting Dunya back. Raskolnikov
refuses because he thinks Svidrgailov is a nasty and manipulative person. He says that he holds the
purest feelings towards Dunya. Also that he is not the cause of his wife’s death. Svidrgailov tells
Raskolnikov how he is just a slave to passion and the story of how he came to marry his wife and their
deal between them. He even claims to have been visited by his wife’s ghost. He also says that he had
heard of Dunya’s engagement, and agrees that it is a bad match and wants to help end it. Svidrgailov
tells Raskolnikov that he is no longer in love with Dunya, but does not want to see her end up with
Luzhin. He also says that he will give her ten thousand rubles as an apology. Raskolnikov says that she
would never accept it. He also tells Raskolnikov that his wife left her three thousand rubles in her will.
Chapter 2
“Avdotya Romanovna, if I go out of that door now, with a such a farewell, depends upon it I shall never
return. Think well! I mean what I say! What insolence! Cried Dunya, spring up from her place. I do not
wish you to return! What? So that’s it! (pg. 258)
Razumikhin and Raskolnikov walk to the restaurant. Razumikhin has learned from Porfriy that
they suspect Raskolnikov for the murders; he finds this very odd. They arrive at the same time as
Luzhin. Luzhin is upset that Raskolnikov and Razumikhin are there. Luzhin tells them that Svidrgailov
is in town. Raskolnikov upset him even more when he tells him that he has met with him and he wants
to meet with Dunya. Luzhin start to talk about what he learned about Svidrgailov; Dunya say these
things are wrong and they are just useless gossip. Dunya asks why Luzhin has such a problem with her
brother. She gives him the choice to either try to like her brother or leave. He only leaves after he
insults them. Luzhin blames his loss of Dunya on Raskolnikov, and thinks he still has a chance with
Dunya.
Chapter 3
“He is ma-a-d, but not heartless! He is out of his mind. Don’t you see that? It is heartless of you to call
him so! Whispered Razumikhin hotly, close to hear ear, while he clasped her hand tightly I will come
back.”(pg. 265)
After luzhin leaves they are all happy, but Raskolnikov quickly becomes nerves again. He tells
them of his conversation with Sivdrgailov and the ten thousand rubles. They quickly refuse to take the
money; Razumikhin believes that Sivdrgailov is a dangerous man and offer to protect Dunya and she
accepts. Razumikhin comes up with this idea that they should start a book printing business.
Raskolnikov decides that he can’t take his family anymore and gets up to leave. He promises that he
will come back when he is better. Razumikhin relives that is friend is the murder.
Chapter 4
“You will understand afterwards. Haven’t you done the same? You too have stepped over the barrier…
you were able to do it. You laid hands on yourself, you destroyed a life… your own. You might have
livid by reason and the spirit, but you will end on the hay market… But you cannot endure, and if you
remain alone you will go out of your senses, like me. You are like a madwoman even now; so we must
go together, by the same path! Let us go!”(pg. 27)
Raskolnikov goes to see Sonya. They discuss Katerina, who Sonya thinks is both innocent and
childlike. Raskolnikov ask Sonya what see would do if Katerina dies because she was very ill.
Raskolnikov and Sonya know that her little sister will suffer the same fate as her if they do not get any
more money. Sonya clings to the faith that God will protect all of them. Sonya tells Raskolnikov that
she was friend with Lizaveta and has a cross and book of gospel from her. Raskolnikov asks her to read
the story of Lazarus. Which is when Jesus resurrects a man who had died. He believes because of what
she has to do she has in fact killed herself. Raskolnikov tells her that she will some know who killed
Lizaveta. As they have their conversation Sivdrgailov was listening in the other room.
Chapter 5
“ you keep on lying he said slowly and faintly, with a sickly smile distorting his lips, you want to prove
to me again that you know my game, that you know all my answers beforehand, he went on, that he was
no longer weighing his words as he should. You want to frighten me … or else you are simply laughing
at me…” (pg. 293)
Raskolnikov goes to see Porfriy the next day, while he waits he thinks about how much he hates
him. Raskolnikov gives him his paper about his pawned things. They start a long conversation in which
Raskolnikov has felt that he has fallen in to a trap. Raskolnikov believes that he is being questioned and
gets up to leave. Profiry tells him it is a friendly conversation and ask him to stay a little bit longer.
Porfiry discuss the psychological tricks he is going to use to catch the murder. Profiry keeps on making
suspicions of Raskolnikov, so Raskolnikov gets angry and ask him out right if he is accusing him of
anything. Raskolnikov is about to go when Porfiry tells him he has a surprise for him. Then the door to
the office burst open and Nikolai comes in.
Chapter 6
“I began finding things out. I found out all I could yesterday, and today I went there. The first time I
went, he wasn’t there. I went back an hour afterwards, and I couldn’t see him, but the third time they let
me in. Well, I began to tell him everything just as it happened, and he began fussing round the room and
hitting his chest with his fist.”(pg. 302)
Nikolai, who is under suspicion for the murder, comes in and confesses. Porfiry does not believe
him but takes it seriously anyway. He shows Raskolnikov out and tells him that he will need to see him
another time for more questions. Raskolnikov goes home and decides to go to the dinner for
Marmeladov; just then the man who called him a murderer shows up in his door way. The man lives in
the pawnbroker’s building and witnessed Raskolnikov’s visit to the scene of the crime. He went and
told this to Porfriy, and was listening in on the conversation behind the door. Now he feels sad for the
way Raskolnikov is being treated; this makes Raskolnikov feel relieved that he will not be caught after
all.
Part 5:
Van Gogh, The potato eaters.
In part five, we see the aftermath of Marldeov’s funeral. A lot of things happen at the dinner and
then after to cause Katrenia to die from the disease and all of the stress. I chose this painting because it
reminds me of the dinner after the funeral. The painting shows the best all of the lower class people
who showed up at the dinner. The woman that you only see here back is I think she is a little higher
class than others. This scene I think is what Katerina feared would happen to her and her children when
they did not have enough money which caused her to leave and ended up in her death. You can see all
of these people are deathly ill and are having trouble finding food. Katerina always believed that she
was of upper class that is why she spent half of the money from Raskolnikov.
Chapter 1
“In view of her position, and that of the unfortunate little children, I should like-as I said before- as far
as lies in my power, to be of some help, that is, as far as lies in my power, as they say, and no more.”(pg.
316)
Luzhin is in his room with Lebezyatnikov, his roommate, he has realized that his engagement is
over and he blames Raskolnikov for it happening. They have been invited to the dinner for
Marmeladov. They decide not to go. Luzhin want to speak to Sonya about helping the family. He has
Sonya come to the room, lets Lebezyatnikov stay, and he tells her that he will try to help her but will not
give anything directly to Katerina. He gives her a ten ruble note and she leaves to go to the dinner.
Chapter 2
“The most potent influence on her was that special pride of poor, which makes many poor people, in
observing some of those social rites obligatory in our way of life for all and sundry, exert their utmost
efforts and spend the last penny of their savings, simply in order to make good a showing as their
neighbors and not be criticized by them.”(pg. 319)
The narrator describes the dinner party and how Katerina spent as much as she could to make it
look nice for all of the guests. Only Raskolnikov and the lowly tenants attend the dinner. Katerina
insults them, as well she appear to be very ill. She starts to fight with her landlady. Later Luzhin
appears at the door and she rushes to him.
Chapter 3
“I saw you, I saw you! Asserted Lebezyatnikov in a shout, and although it is against my principles, I
am prepared to swear any oath you like in court immediately, because I saw how you put it
surreptitiously into her pocket! Only I, like a fool, thought you were doing it out of kindness! In the
doorway, as you parted from her, when she had turned and you were shaking her hand with one of
yours, with the other the left hand, you slipped the note into her pocket on the sly. I saw you! I saw
you!”(pg. 336)
Luzhin ignores Katerina, and goes to Sonya. He asks her if she stole a one hundred ruble note
from him. Sonya is so nervous that she cannot speak, she denies the theft. Katerina is so insulted that
she starts yelling at Lluzhin. To show him she turns out Sonya pockets, in one of her pocket is the note.
Raskolnikov try to defend Sonya say she would never do anything like that. Lebezyatnikov comes and
tells everyone that it was Luzhin who put the money in her pocket because he saw him do it during his
meeting with Sonya. Raskolnikov explains that he tried to do this to get back at him for what has
happened between him and Dunya. Luzhin leaves and Katerina argues with her landlady which in the
end she and her children are evicted.
Chapter 4
“ go at once, this instant, stand at the cross-roads, first bow down and kiss the earth you have desecrated,
then bow to the whole world, to the four corners of the earth, and say aloud to all the world; I have done
murder. Then god will send you life again. Will you go? Will you go? She implored him, shaking all
over as if in a fit, with her burning gaze fixed on him.”(pg. 355)
Raskolnikov visits Sonya in her flat. He tells her that her family got evicted from their flat, but
tells her not to go and help them. Raskolnikov confesses to the murders to Sonya. She feels pity and
promises to help him get through this anyway. Raskolnikov tells her that he did not kill her for the
money because he was so poor, but for the chance to be an extraordinary man. Sonya says that he must
confess to Porfiry and that she will visit him in prison. She gives him a little wooden cross to wear. As
they are finishing their conversation Lebezyatnikov comes in.
Chapter 5
“Oh yes, she is clamoring that since everybody has abandoned her now she will take the children and go
out into the streets with a barrel-organ, and the children shall sing and dance, and she will as well, and
collect money, and every day they will go under the general’s window…let them see well-born children,
whose father was a civil servant, going about the street as beggars.”(pg. 357)
Lebezyatnikov tells Sonya that Katerina has gone mad. She has visited the homes of well to do
people asking for their help and been thrown out. Now she is planning to wander the streets with her
children and have them sing and dance while she plays music. Sonya rushes out to find Katerina.
Raskolnikov goes home and finds that his sister is there waiting for him. She has learned of how
Raskolnikov has been suspected by the police from Razumikhin. Dunya wants to give Raskolnikov her
support. Raskolnikov tells her that Razumikhin is a good man. Raskolnikov leaves to the streets and
finds Lebezyatnikov he tells him that Katerina has gone mad and will soon be arrested by the police.
Katerina is in the street performing. The police come, as she tries to get away she falls and coughs up a
lot of blood. They take her back to Sonya’s home and lays her on the bed. Surrounded by everyone she
dies after having a convulsion. Sonya is so upset that she throws herself over the body. Sivdrigaylov
appears and tell Raskolnikov that he will give the money he was going to give to Dunya instead to
Sonya and the children.
Part 6:
Manet, The suicide
In part six, we see Raskolnikov take a fall after the death of Katerina and does not know what he
is going to do about his guilt over the murders. Through a conversation with Porfriy he learns that he
knows it is him but has no evidence and suggests he should confess. Raskolnikov also considers to kill
himself, but he decides against it and ends up confessing. The painting shows of his thoughts of suicide
which he decides against. It also shows his mental suicide when he confessed he gave up on his thought
of his possibility of being the extraordinary man. This was the whole reason he wanted to commit the
murders so when he confess he loses his goal and his thought to change the world for the better.
Chapter 1
“Of course! Whatever happens to me, whatever I go, you will stay and look after them. I entrust them to
you, so to speak, Razumikhin. I say this because I know very well how much you love her, and I am
sure your heart is pure. I know too, that she could love you, and perhaps she already does. Now decide
for yourself whether it is better for you to start drinking or not.”(pg. 374)
Raskolnikov falls into a delirious haze after the death of Katerina. He walks the streets and stops
in bars and outside of Sonya’s building. Razumikhin comes and visits him to ask if he has truly gone
mad. He decides he is not but is angry at him for all of the pain that he caused his family by being
selfish. He tells Raskolnikov of the letter that Dunya received from a stranger. Also he tells him that
Profiry believes that the painter is guilty of the murders. Raskolnikov tells Razumikhin of his
conversation he had with Dunya. Razumikhin leaves and Porfiry comes to see Raskolnikov.
Chapter 2
“I have come here, in the third place, with a direct and open invention to you to come forward with a
confession. It will be infinitely better for you, and it will be better for me too-because it will be a weight
off my mind. Well, tell me, have I been open with you or not? Raskolnikov thought for a minute.
Listen, Porfiry Petrovich; after all, you said yourself it was only psychology, but now you have gone
over to mathematics. Well what if you are mistaken yourself? No Rodion Romanovich, I am not
mistaken. I have my scrap of proof. I had found it even then; god sent it to me! What proof? I shall not
tell you, Rodion Romanovich. But in any case I have no righto delay any longer; I shall arrest you. So
your judgment: it is all the same to me now, consequently I am acting solely for your sake. I swear it
will be better for you, Rodion Romanovich!”(pg. 387)
Porfiry comes to visit Raskolnikov. He apologizes for the way he had treated Raskolnikov at his
office. He also told him that he was trying to get a confession out of Raskolnikov. He admits that the
only reason he suspects Raskolnikov is because of his article, him fainting at the police station, and his
conversation with Zametov. He also admits that he does not believe the painter is the murderer. Porfiry
claims that Raskolnikov is the murderer but does not arrest him. He feels bad for Raskolnikov and tells
him that he will get off easier if he confesses to the crime. Porfiry tells him that he will put in a good
word with the judge for him. He is confident that Raskolnikov’s guilt will get him to confess. Before he
leaves he tells him to leave a note of where he hid the things if he is going to commit suicide.
Raskolnikov leaves his room soon after Porfiry.
Chapter 3
“You mean, do I approve or disapprove of debauchery? Debauchery? So that’s what you think!
However, I will take things in order and answer you first about woman in general; I inclined to be
talkative, you know. Tell me, why should I put any restraint on myself? Why should I give up women,
if I have any inclination for them? It’s something to do at any rate. So all you hope for here is a spell of
debauchery? Well, why not? Debauchery if you will! You seem to like the word! But I like a straight
question, at any rate. In debauchery there is at least something constant.”(pg. 397)
Raskolnikov goes looking for Sivdrigaylov. He finds him in one of the back rooms of an café.
After a short conversation with him, Raskolnikov threatens that kill him if he tell anyone about the
recent information that he discovered well listing to Raskolnikov and Sonya conversation. He warns
him that he cannot use this information to force himself on Dunya. Sivdrigaylov starts to talk about his
life. Raskolnikov disgusted by him gets up to leave but stay because Sivdrigaylov mentions Dunya.
Chapter 4
“From some words and hints you dropped while you were telling your story, I notice that you still have
your own views, and your own urgent designs on Dunya-vicious ones, of course. What? Did I let words
and hints of that kind escape me? Svidrigaylov was naively startled, but paid not the slightest attention
to the epithet applied to his designs.”(pg. 404)
Sivdrigaylov tells Raskolnikov about his relationship with his wife and how he was allowed to
be unfaithful. He tells him about what happened with Dunya while she was working for him.
Throughout this conversation Raskolnikov relives that Sivdrigaylov is getting drunk. The only reason
the relationship bothered his wife was because she had actually likes Duaya. Raskolnikov tells that
Sivdrigaylov is still in love with Dunya and still wants her. He tries to distract Raskolnikov by telling
him that he had found a new wife who is young and very innocent. Raskolnikov is disgusted at the
engagement and mad at the fact that Sivdirgaylov has enjoyment in his future bride. Sivdirgaylov leaves
and Raskolnikov follows him worried that he will still go after Sonya even though he engaged.
Chapter 5
"Dunechka shuddered, hastily cocked the gun, and again leveled it. Leave me alone! She said
desperately. I swear I will shoot again…I…. will kill you!... Well… at three paces it is impossible not to
kill. But if you don’t kill me… then…his eyes gleamed, and he took two more paces forward.
Dunechka pulled the trigger, and the gun misfired.”(pg. 420)
Sivdrigaylov see that he is being followed and he once again say goodbye to Raskolnikov.
Raskolnikov does not follow him after he gets in a carriage to another part of the city. What he does not
know is that he gets off 100 yards later. Sivdirgaylov sees Dunya in the street and get her to his room by
reminding her that he knows her brother’s secret. He tells her that he overheard Raskolnikov confessing
to murder. He says he will help her if only she marries him. She is scared and confused. She tries to
leave but he has locked the door. Sivdirgaylov threatens to rape Dunya and say he will report
Raskolnikov if she reports him. Dunya then pulls out a gun and try to shot him. She tries twice but the
both miss. He tries to calm her, but realizes that she will never love him and lets her leave. She leaves
the gun and it has one more bullet in it. He leaves his room soon after.
Chapter 6
“It is for you, for you Sofya Semenovna, and, pleases, without any discussion, because I really have no
time. And you will need it. Rodion Romanovich has two ways open to him: a bullet through the brain,
or Siberia. Don’t be disturbed; I know everything, and from his own lips, but I am not a talker. I shall
not tell anybody.”(pg. 423)
Sivdirgaylov wanders around St. Petersburg getting wet from all of the rain. He goes to visit
Sonya. He tells her that all of her family will be taken care of. He also tell her that he knows what
Raskolnikov did and gives her some money for when she fallows him to jail. He tells her to not tell
anyone about the money. He wants her to use so she can go with Raskolnikov to Serbia. After leaving
Sonya’s he goes and visits his fiancée’s he gives her a gift of fifth teen thousand robles. He also tells
them that he will be leaving for some time. He goes to a hotel to get some sleep. He has a feverish
dream where he imagines that he found a little girl in the hotel crying and that he took her to his room.
He also dreams of a huge flood because of the rain. He wakes up just before dawn and goes for a walk.
He finds a soldier who on watch before he kills himself he tell the solder to tell everyone that he went to
America. The he shouts himself in the head.
Chapter 7
“Brother, brother, why are you saying this? You really did spill blood! Cried Dunya, in despair. Which
everybody sheds, he put in almost frantically, which flows and has always flowed on this Earth in
torrents, which is poured out like champagne, and for which men are crowned in the capitol and
afterwards called benefactors of mankind. I myself wanted to benefit men, and I would have done
hundreds, thousands, of good deeds, to make up for that one piece of stupidity.”(pg. 439)
Raskolnikov goes and sees his mother. She is impressed by his article but does not understand it.
He does not want to talk about the article. His mother thinks that he can do anything that he tries to do.
He scares his mother by asking whether he loves him and if she will always love him no matter what.
He tells her that he loves her but he has to leave her. She tries to make him stay but he leaves.
Raskolnikov goes back to his apartment and finds Dunya there. He tells Dunya that he thought about
committing suicide. But he tells her that he is going to confess. She thinks that it is the right thing for
him to do. He thinks that he only killed a criminal that was stealing from other people. Raskolnikov
has realized how much pain he has caused his family. They leave together stopping to look at each other
one last time as they separate.
Chapter 8
“It was I… began Raskolnikov. Drink some water. Raskolnikov waved aside the water and spoke
quietly and brokenly, but distinctly. It was I who killed the old woman and her sister, lizaveta, with an
axe and robbed them.”(pg. 450)
Raskolnikov goes and sees Sonya, he has come to tell her that he is confessing and she says a
prayer for him. Raskolnikov is heading towards the police station, first he stops and declares his guilt at
the crossroads. He kisses the ground, and as the onlookers stare he decides that he will not confess until
he sees Sonya following him. He goes to the police station and while he is there finds out that
Sivdrigaylov has killed himself. He almost leaves and then turns back and confesses to the murders.
Epilogue:
Gustav Klimt, the kiss
In the epilogue, we see the aftermath of Raskolnikov confessing to the murders. He is given a
break because he confessed and showed remorse for what he had done. When he was sent to Sibera
Soyna followed him and comes and visits him every day while he is at work. The reason I chose this
painting is because it show the love and happy ending that could come to these two characters. Also it
shows the happiness that happens for Razumikhin when he marries Dunya and they start their life
together. We see in the second chapter of the epilogue that Soyna sees that Raskolnikov does love her.
In the painting you cannot really sees a separation of the two people and I think this shows the bond
between Sonya and Raskolnikov over the fact that they both have committed a sin and have both
chosen to get redemption from God.
Chapter 1
“during next two or three years, at any rate the foundation of his future livelihood as well as he could, to
accumulate at least a little money, and to emigrate to Siberia, where the soil was rich in every sense,
then he would settle in the town where Rodya was and … they would all begin a new life together.”(pg.
455)
Raskolnikov is in prison in Siberia. It has been nine months and a year and a half since the
murders. At the trial he confessed to the crime, says that he is guilty, why he killed Lizaveta, and where
he hid the stolen things. They think that he was truly guilty because he did not spend any of the money.
Helped with Razumikhin told him about his acts of charity. In the end Raskolnikov was sentenced to
eight year of hard labor. Sonya went with Raskolnikov to the Siberi. Razumikhin and Dunya get
married. They don’t tell his mother and she ask question about where he is, she soon dies. Sonya is the
link between Raskolnikov and the rest still in St. Petersburg. Latter Raskolnikov gets sick and ends up
in the hospital.
Chapter 2
“She understood, and she no longer doubted that he loved her, loved her forever, and that now at last the
moment had come… they tried to speak, but they could not. Tears stood in their eyes. They were both
pale and thin, but in their white sick faces there glowed the dawn of a new future, a perfect resurrection
into new life. Love had raised them from the dead, and the heart of each held endless springs of life for
the heart of the other. They knew they must wait and be patient. They had seven more years before
them.”(pg. 463-464)
Raskolnikov does not mind the condition of the prison. He feels this is what he deserves for
what he has done. Sonya comes and visits him every day while he is at work. Sonya gets sick and he
worries about her. When she gets better, she comes and visits him and she realizes that they love each
other and they only have to wait seven more year to be together.
