The laboratory emphasizes technique used in the isolation of microorganisms, aseptic technique and the use of biochemical testing for taxonomic purposes. Prerequisite: Chem 1114 or Chem 1315 AND Bio 1224 Course Purpose & Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student should: 1. Have a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of microorganisms, with a strong emphasis on bacteria. 2. Understand bacterial diversity, major orders of bacteria, and the use of morphological and physiological differences for taxonomy. 3. Understand the concept of pathogenesis and the immune response of the infected host. 4. Have a laboratory experience that will make them proficient in culturing and identifying bacteria using aseptic techniques, staining methods, selective and differential media, and biochemical tests. For example: Guldenbio1114section21032098 COURSE REQUIREMENTS This course consists of a series of activities and assessments to assist you in achieving the objectives for the course. Each week you will on work on a combination of readings, quizzes and lab assignments. Submit assignments as directed. 3. Spend time every day doing some studying. 4. Lecture quizzes and exams will be made available to students at times specified. If you have to miss these you must notify the Instructor and make arrangements BEFORE you miss the quiz or exam. 5. Make-up policy - You may not make-up any quizzes or exams unless this has been arranged with the Instructor ahead of time (see above). There is no makeup for missed labs . However, it is recognized that there are extenuating circumstances that may create difficulties for students. The Instructor may choose to double the score of the next quiz or exam and use that score as a make-up or require the student to makeup the work through alternate assignments such as a paper, or an alternate quiz or exam. Notwithstanding the above, there is no makeup for the final quiz and/or exam. You will only be given one opportunity for a makeup quiz or exam during the semester. Note: The Instructor may from time to time change provisions to the course. If changes are made these will be provided in writing on Blackboard with an accompanying announcement. Grading: 1. Exams will be announced. Each exam will be worth 120 points and will cover material specified in the syllabus. Note that each of these exams will combine lecture and lab work for each section assigned. These points will be transferred to the Blackboard gradebook periodically by the instructor. 2. The final exam is comprehensive and worth 150 points. 3. Lab assignments will be announced and are worth 20 points each. These may include but are not limited to lab reports, worksheets, short essays or journal article reviews. These points will be transferred to the Blackboard gradebook periodically by the instructor. You will submit the assigned work by the time specified in the schedule for this course. 4. Each quiz will be worth 10 points and will cover material specified in the syllabus. 5. Unknown identification – you and a lab partner will be required to complete an unknown exercise and write it up (further information to be provided) 6. Participation is awarded weekly. Students who complete all of the assigned weekly work will receive 5 points per week for participation.
