Course Purpose & Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the student should:
1. Have a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of microorganisms, with a strong
emphasis on bacteria.
2. Understand bacterial diversity, major orders of bacteria, and the use of morphological and
physiological differences for taxonomy.
3. Understand the concept of pathogenesis and the immune response of the infected host.
4. Have a laboratory experience that will make them proficient in culturing and identifying bacteria
using aseptic techniques, staining methods, selective and differential media, and biochemical
tests.
Student Learning Objectives:
1. Define and correctly use scientific terminology in regard to biological organisms and processes.
2. Synthesize information, think critically and solve critical thinking problems; write clear, well

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
This course consists of a series of activities and assessments to assist you in achieving the objectives for
the course. Each week you will on work on a combination of readings, quizzes and lab assignments.
The following are the golden rules for doing well in the course:
2
Tulsa Community College
BIOL 2164 – 102-31096 – Introduction to Microbiology
1. Check blackboard announcements regularly.
2. Submit assignments as directed.
3. Spend time every day doing some studying.
4. Lecture quizzes and exams will be made available to students at times specified. If you have to
miss these you must notify the Instructor and make arrangements BEFORE you miss the quiz or
exam.
5. Make-up policy - You may not make-up any quizzes or exams unless this has been arranged
with the Instructor ahead of time (see above). There is no makeup for missed labs . However,
it is recognized that there are extenuating circumstances that may create difficulties for
students. The Instructor may choose to double the score of the next quiz or exam and use that
score as a make-up or require the student to makeup the work through alternate assignments
such as a paper, or an alternate quiz or exam. Notwithstanding the above, there is no makeup
for the final quiz and/or exam. You will only be given one opportunity for a makeup quiz or
exam during the semester.
Note: The Instructor may from time to time change provisions to the course. If
changes are made these will be provided in writing on Blackboard with an
accompanying announcement.
Grading:
1. Exams will be announced. Each exam will be worth 120 points and will cover material specified in
the syllabus. Note that each of these exams will combine lecture and lab work for each section
assigned. These points will be transferred to the Blackboard gradebook periodically by the
instructor.
2. The final exam is comprehensive and worth 150 points.
3. Lab assignments will be announced and are worth 20 points each. These may include but are not
limited to lab reports, worksheets, short essays or journal article reviews. These points will be
transferred to the Blackboard gradebook periodically by the instructor. You will submit the assigned
work by the time specified in the schedule for this course.
4. Each quiz will be worth 10 points and will cover material specified in the syllabus.
5. Unknown identification – you and a lab partner will be required to complete an unknown exercise
and write it up (further information to be provided)
6. Participation is awarded weekly. Students who complete all of the assigned weekly work will
receive 5 points per week for participation.




require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a
substitute assignment or test;
Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively
withdraw the student from the class;
Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.
Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by
submitting such request to the Dean of Student Services.
