Photosynthesis
Purpose
 To
make food for the plant
Two Types of Energy
 Radiant


Energy
Comes from the sun
Needed to start photosynthesis
 Chemical


Energy
Comes from glucose
This is what radiant energy transforms into
Main Organelle
 Chloroplast
The location
where food is made
 Contains
chlorophyll

Chlorophyll
 Chlorophyll
is what captures the sun’s
energy
 They are like solar panels
 This is where radiant energy from the sun is
turned into chemical energy
 This is also where the two hydrogen
molecules and the oxygen molecule in
water are split apart
Stage 1 of Photosynthesis
 The
plant (chlorophyll) captures the sun’s
energy
 Happens mainly in
Leaves
Requires Carbon
Dioxide and
Water.
ENERGY TRANSFORMATION

Energy from the sun starts the chemical
reaction

That energy is then used to “break apart” the
carbon dioxide molecules and water
molecules. Then they are reassembled to
make….


Glucose – which is storing the radiant energy as
chemical for the plant cell
Oxygen
Stage 2 of Photosynthesis
 Cells
inside the plant make sugars
(glucose)
 They take the hydrogen from the water
molecule and the carbon dioxide and a
chemical reaction occurs using the
radiant energy
 This reaction produces glucose

This is the main food source for the plant
Equation
Just like a cake recipe, you have to have
certain ingredients before it can be made
into an edible cake.
