PART - A (10 x 2 = 20) Answer ALL the Questions State the advantages and disadvantages pulverized fuel firing. 2. What are the advantages of use of super heaters? 3. What are the requirements of a condenser? 4. What is called regenerative cycle in power plant? 5. What are the disadvantages nuclear power plants? 6. What are the methods followed to improve the efficiency of a gas turbine power cycles? 7. What is called fuel cell? 8. A 100 kW geothermal power plant is operated for 11 months in a year. One month is for maintenance shutdown. The cost of electrical energy supplied is `.2.5/- per kW-hr. Calculate the total earning by the power plant neglecting losses. 9. What are the components of a fixed cost? 10. Write the names of the power plants are not polluting the environments. PART – B (5 x 12 = 60) Answer ALL the Questions 11. Describe the various types of burners used to burn pulverized coal. (or) 12. With a neat sketch explain the working of an air pre heater. 13. With a near sketch explain the working of La-Mont boiler. (or) 14. Draw the layout of a reheat cycle used in power plant operations and represent the process on t-s diagram. Drive the relation to find efficiency of the cycle. 15. With a neat diagram explain the working of nuclear reactor and its components. (or) 16. With a neat layout explain the working of pumped storage hydro electric power plant. 17. With neat sketches explain eh working of central receiver solar power plant and distribute (Parabolic) Trough solar power plant. (or) 18. A 10 m/s wind is at 1 standard atmosphere and 15C. Calculate: (a) The total power density in the wind stream. (b) The maximum obtainable power density. (c) A reasonably obtainable power density and (d) Total power produced if the turbine diameter is 120 m. 19. Write short notes on the following. (a) Acid rain (b) Water pollution from thermal power plants. (c) Radiation from nuclear power plant effluents. (or) 20. The input – output curve of a 25 MW capacity generating power plant is given by I = 5 x 106 (7 + 0.2L = 0.1 L2). Where I is in kJ/h and L is in MW. Find the average rate of hear supplied (heat supplied per MW/h) when the plant is operating 25 MW load for 10 hours in a day and it was kept hot at zero load for the remaining period of 14 hours. Also find the saving in the heat rate if the same energy is produced for the whole day at constant load.
