PREDEPARTURE PROGRAM ACTIVITIES Link to

Pre-Departure Orientation #1: Wednesday, October 18, 2012 – Room 6-212

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

Ice-breaker activity.

Collect medical forms, photos, and any other missing documents. Pass out recommended packing list.

Review short-term study abroad information sheet. Clarify payment and scholarship questions.

Study abroad program overview: destinations, academic requirements, course syllabus, transportation, weather, accommodations, etc.

Discuss passport and visa process.

France country and culture assignments (students work in pairs and pick a topic to present to the class for the next pre-departure meeting). Must include a handout.

No PowerPoint.

Health, Safety, and Emergency Preparedness in Study Abroad

Student power point presentations on assigned country/culture points of interest.

Nine presentations with two students per group.

Pre-Departure Orientation # 3 : Week of 1/18, 2013

Review the predicted weather forecasts in France and discuss appropriate clothing to bring on the trip.

Discuss money exchange procedures.

A discussion of French cuisine, table manners, and pricing at the restaurants in

Paris.

Students will present information concerning the assigned pre-departure readings.

Faculty will elaborate and lecture on the pre-departure readings.

Distribute journals and discuss the concept of a reflective travel journal

A dinner will be provided for the students at the Local French restaurant, the Coq au

Vin.

Last minute tips concerning currency, weather, time to be at the airport, etc.

Depart Orlando in the afternoon form Orlando International Airport.

Depart at 10:55 am

Arrival at (Paris-Charles de Gaulle

Airport) International Airport at approximately (6:30 AM). Car transportation to the Holiday Inn

Express Canal de La Vilette Hotel.

Get settled and rest.

BREAKFAST at the hotel with the group.

Overnight flight on the airplane.

LUNCH with the group and then rest time.

Please note that all meals, except breakfasts, will be at the individual students expense throughout the time in Paris

Learning activity – transportation system with a guided trip to the center of Paris.

DINNER with the group and then rest time.

BREAKFAST with the group.

Bus tour of the city of Paris.

Visit to the Eiffel Tower

Professor and students (those that have done research on this subject) will provide information concerning each site visited.

BREAKFAST with the group.

Bus tour of the city of Paris continues.

The Louvre Museum.

Lectures on the architecture and the

Two groups of students will also be involved in presenting materials concerning the Egyptian gallery and the Etruscan/Roman gallery based on pre-departure research. history of the Musee du Louvre will be given by the professors. The tour of the museum will be led by the professors who will lecture on individual art pieces found in their collection.

LUNCH at The Champ de Mars with the group.

Visit to the Rodin Museum with lectures by the professors related to the sculptures located in the different galleries of the museum. The focus will be on Rodin’s most famous works including The Thinker.

DINNER with the group and then rest time.

LUNCH with the group.

Tour of the Musee du Louvre will continue.

DINNER with the group and then rest time.

One hour of review and reflection time will be conducted after dinner.

BREAKFAST with the group.

Project time.

Short trip by public transportation to

Versailles (whole day).

Lectures on the palace and the gardens of Versailles will be given by the professor. Headsets (using

English) will be provided to each

LUNCH at Versailles with the group.

Tour continues of Versailles with a tour of the Gardens.

Return on public transport.

Paris student during the tour of the palace.

Highpoints of the tour will include the

Fountain of Neptune, the opera house,the Hall of Mirrors, and the

King’s Bedroom. One group of students will also present information they researched as part of their assigned homework.

BREAKFAST with the group.

Walking tour of the Montmartre area of Paris lead by the professors. Stops and lectures will include the following points of interest:

1) Espace Dali Montmartre

2) Place du Tertre

3) St-Pierre de Montmartre

4) Halle Saint Pierre

BREAKFAST with the group.

River boat tour along the Seine.

Tour to Notre Dame climbing to the cathedral’s towers with a lecture on the architecture and history of the

Cathedral.

A student group will present on the

Rose Window that is one of the key attractions of Notre Dame.

BREAKFAST with the group.

Tour the Galeries Lafyette.

A walking tour of the national opera house.

LUNCH with the group.

Visit to Sacre Coeur, The Museum of the Middle Ages and the Musee the

Montmartre and Montmartre cemetery.

Professors will lecture on all aspects of the museums and the Montmartre cemetery.

One student group will provide additional information concerning the

Museum of the Middle Ages based on pre-departure research.

DINNER and rest time.

LUNCH with the group.

Tour of Notre Dame continue with a climb to the top tower and a visit to the catacombs.

 Organ concert at the cathedral’s towers.

Special opportunity to attend a religious service in the cathedral of Notre Dame.

DINNER and rest time.

LUNCH with the group.

Visit to the Musee Grevin (Wax

Museum).

DINNER and rest time.

Return to the National Opera house for a concert (tickets provided)

Free day to visit approved sites that are of particular interest and related to the final project. It is important to note that the professors must be informed of exactly where the students will visit and that at least two-three students will be going together.

DINNER with the professors with a time for reflection concerning the trip.

Return flight to Orlando, Fl.

Departs Paris at 10:00 am.

Arrives in Orlando at 5:55 pm.
