5th Grade Math and Science: Assignments for the Week of October 5 Last week, many of you noticed we did not follow our assignment sheet exactly. Thank you for checking in with me. We will also have students write the day’s assignment in their agendas, a great way to keep in touch especially if plans change. Please remember that students often have time to complete assignments in class. If we find we need more time on a lesson and want to go deeper into a concept before moving on, we might delay an assignment pushing back the due date listed below. If work is NOT completed in class, students must independently remember to take home, complete, and turn in work. MATH: A great resource, new this year - 5th grade Gomath interactive student edition - "Personal Math Trainer" to guide homework/practice pages, and videos/activities to review or preview lessons. ** Practice Book Page: If a student has missing or lost a page, view the online go math practice book or practice book. This week in Math, different strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication problems develop deeper conceptual understanding of place value. I loved hearing from those of you who viewed the lattice strategy and the area model strategy videos. Here's two explaining partial products and the standard algorithm (the old school way) Go Math 1.7 using the traditional algorithm – practice problems Go Math 1.8 inverse operations Go math 1.9 problem solving Go math 1.10 and 1.11 writing numerical expressions and using order of operations – use animated math models skill 7 online to review/preview Approximate Date Due: 10/6 10/7 10/8 10/9-10/13 Multiplication, Division, addition, and subtraction fact practice should continue until all facts are automatic – That means knowing the fact immediately without counting on hands or using a strategy. Tip: use cards or number cubes (dice) to play math games. Go old school - create flash cards the old fashion way from notecards, decorate the ones that are always challenging. SCIENCE: Approximate Date Due Renewable and nonnewable energy projects, notes and vocabulary 10/9 – Students will explore renewable and non renewable energy, researching and 10/13 presenting the pros and cons of types of energy as experts in one energy form while learning from their peers about other forms of energy. EIA Energy kids will be a major source of information for our presentations.
