The POWER of Wind
Wind power is the scalable renewable
energy solution for clean energy goals and
standards
Wind energy capacity can lower power
prices in wholesale markets
Long-term contracts for wind power lock in
competitive power prices for ratepayers,
hedging the market and supply risks of
fossil fuel sources
Manufacturing, construction and operations
of wind projects utilize local contractors and
businesses, and provide stable income and
tax revenues for host communities
Wind power produces electricity without
jeopardizing natural resources, climate or
public health
W E LCOM E T O COHOCT ON WIND
POWERING THE COHOCTON ECONOMY - NATURALLY
The town of Cohocton has always drawn upon the power of
nature, whether for potato farms, buckwheat mills, or the Fall
Foliage Festival. So it comes as no surprise that Cohocton is
turning to the environment for clean, renewable energy – with
Cohocton Wind. Through this local energy facility, First Wind
is helping Cohocton maintain rural open spaces and
strengthen the town’s economy.
COHOCTON WIND PROFILE:
Operational since January 2009
Comprised of 50 Clipper 2.5 megawatt (MW) turbines
Generates up to 125 MW of clean, safe energy – enough
electricity to power about 35,000 homes annually
Provides full-time direct employment and ongoing
contracting opportunities for New York workers and
companies
The project is helping New York State move closer to its
goal of 30% renewable energy sources by 2015
CLEAN ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT FOR MAINE
First Wind believes that responsible wind power development and
operation is more than just a business; it is a long term
commitment to communities. The Cohocton Wind team has been
working closely with residents and officials since 2002, ensuring
the development of a wind farm that provides a wide range of
local economic and environmental benefits.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Annual tax revenues from Cohocton Wind could be used to
lower taxes while improving schools and strengthening local
services
Cohocton Wind is committed to hiring local residents, offering
more than 60 construction jobs plus several long-term
operations and maintenance positions.
Additional source of income for local landowners who can put
their land to new use without harming the environment
Wind power has no fuel cost so its pricing is more predictable
which helps reduce the volatility of energy rates
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Unlike conventional power sources, wind power produces
electricity without harmful emissions or watershed pollution
Power produced by Cohocton Wind avoids more than 84,000
tons of CO2e per year
218,076 barrels of oil would be required to produce power at a
level equivalent to that of the Cohocton Wind facility
Wind farms enable local property owners to capture a new
source of clean energy without interfering with their current
land use, helping to maintain open spaces.
