Lesson Overview:
Unit: Information Literacy
Safe research skills on the web for age 12 to 14
Introduction:
Children need to be kept safe from the perils of the world wide web. This lesson is intended to help educators teach middle school
age children the following:
- usable skills for safe internet research
- practices that contribute to safe internet use
- healthy practices when accessing information on the internet whether at home or at school
- actions to take when an inappropriate site is accessed
Information Technology skill:
Students will learn how to navigate the internet and search for information and avoid inappropriate sites.

Teacher directed discussion on what is considered inappropriate for middle school age children
Teacher displayed samples of safe search websites (attached below)
Teacher shows while student sets safe search settings for doing research (sites supplied below)
Teacher shows red warning screen, discussion of why this comes up, what happens as a result of reaching the red screen
(sample provided below)
5) Teacher discussion while Students suggest steps to take when a neighbor student comes across inappropriate website
6) Teacher discussion while Students suggest consequences of inappropriate use of websites or school computer

Acceptable Computer Use in schools
User Responsibilities:
to use computer networks for educational purposes
to respect copyright laws
to respect the privacy of others
to follow established guidelines for computer use and etiquette
to take responsibility for all activity with the user’s account
to report violations to teachers or supervisors or the school administration
to use the Internet safely and responsibly, and to immediately leave any site that contains inappropriate
content
Users must not:
use networks for non-educational purposes
deliberately damage equipment or disrupt network performance and services
waste resources such as paper or time
share accounts or passwords
access, damage or destroy the files of another user
bully or harass other users
use language that may be offensive to others
use the networks for unlawful purposes
use the networks to access or distribute inappropriate material, including material that is obscene,
pornographic, threatening or racially offensive
use unauthorized copies of information or software
fail to immediately leave an inappropriate Internet site
plagiarize or make unauthorized use of someone else’s work
Consequences:
Any user who fails to follow appropriate use guidelines may be subject to a loss of network privileges
and/or other disciplinary actions through the school or district code of conduct.
Financial restitution and criminal prosecution may also be applicable.
