How many years of science does my
child need to graduate?

3 years! However, we strongly recommend our
college bound students to take 4 years of science and
4 years of math.
What courses are offered as a 4th
year?
AP Biology
 AP Chemistry
 AP Environmental Science
 AP Physics
 Marine Science
 Human Physiology
 Earth Space Systems

How are grades determined in this
class?





Tests & quizzes…50% of total grade.
Assignments…30% (includes class work and
homework) of total grade.
Projects…10%
Bell work . . . 5%
Binder/Notebook (aka – organization) …5%
What is “paperless”?

We have been given a wonderful opportunity to
go “paperless” in this class. What this means is
that majority of your student’s work will be
completed online.

Class work and homework assignments will be
completed and graded using Quia.com. On this
website their work is graded immediately showing
those questions they got correct and those they got
incorrect with the correct answers.
What is “paperless”?


There is also an on-line textbook that they can use as a
resource with accompanying activities to reinforce the
biology concepts learned in class.
In addition, there will be several other sites they will be
using: Discovery Education, teacher tube, YouTube,
and many science websites.
What is QUIA?

A website with various activities designed with
different learning styles in mind to suit the needs of
your student. QUIA provides a wide variety of tools,
including:







including flash cards,
word search,
battleship,
Hangman,
Rags to Riches (Who wants to be a millionaire game show),
challenge board (Jeopardy game show)
I also put study guides and practice quizzes that
allow your student to practice unlimited amounts of
times to become “experts” on the concepts of biology.
A sample of an activity on QUIA.
Were there any papers I was
supposed to sign?

Tomorrow! I will be sending home a total of 2
papers and 1 needed to come back to me.
You have a Website?


Yes! Because we are going paperless, I needed a
way for the student to retrieve their assignments.
If you visit our school webpage, click on
students, then teachers, you will find my name.
Click on my name and there it is!
What if we don’t have a computer
at home?


Class assignments will be done in class on the
computer.
Home work assignment will be given 7 days in
advance so that they can come here on their
own time to finish. Waverider learning center
will also be open starting next week after school.


I can also print out or give an alternate assignment.
Project will be assigned a month in advance.
Again, they can come in on their own time to
complete the project.

How often do you give homework?
 Every night. Usually no more than 30 minutes.
Some nights may take longer, some nights
shorter. With this year’s paperless task,
homework will be given 7 days notice.

Is it true you don’t accept late homework, class
work, or projects?
 Yes that is true. One of Kealakehe’s General
Learner Outcomes is for our students is to be
“Self-directed Learners; The ability to be
responsible for one’s own learning”.
How often do you assign projects?
 Ongoing…Biology
Website
 There will be 4 “BIG” projects (1 per
quarter).
 There will also be mini projects or activities
for each new concept introduced.
What kind of projects will my
student be doing?
 Quarter
1= designing a controlled
experiment with one independent variable.
In this project they will be submitting a
formal lab report with charts, graphs, and
pictures.
 We start next week Wed/Thurs
 Quarter 1 = mini project…design a song or
poem.
What kind of projects will my
student be doing?
 Quarter
2 Big project = about the cell!
 Quarter 2 mini project = cumulative
review game they design.
What kind of projects will my
student be doing?
 Quarter
3 =Genetic Disease/Disorder
PowerPoint presentation w/ brochure







Red blood cells become “sickle” shaped or
shaped like a “c”.
Sickle shaped cells cannot move smoothly
through out blood vessels.
They tend to form clumps because they are
stiff and sticky.
The clogged vessels cause pain and often
times, organ damage and serious infections.
Sickle cell genes make abnormal hemoglobin,
which clumps together when it gives its
oxygen to the tissues.
Hemoglobin clumps cause red blood cells to
become stiff.
Other Names: Hemoglobin SS Disease, HbS
Disease, Sickle Cell Disorder, Sickling
Disorder due to Hemoglobin, SCD.
Sickle Cell
Anemia
What kind of projects will my
student be doing?
 Quarter
4 Option 1= semester 2 review
project
 Quarter 4 Option 2 = inquiry design of a
transgenic organism.
How do I check my student’s grade?


PowerSchool is up and running NOW! If you
lost your log in information, send your student
to the library.
You can also have your student show you their
QUIA account. It shows what grade they got
on every assignment, quiz, and exam.
How often do you update grades?
Every two weeks.
 Some things I put in daily, like bell work and
participation, but larger assignments take at least 2
weeks.
 However! Because we are paperless, it maybe even
quicker than 2 weeks 

Do you offer extra credit?
Yes. Students must take advantage during the
quarter when it is offered. I have already offered 30
points extra credit since school started!
 There will not be, however, a special extra credit
given at the end of the quarter to bring up grades.

When are you available for help?
Almost daily after school. Best to make an with
appointment only.
 Last half of lunch only with appointment.
 I strongly suggest to students they make
appointments (before and after school) with me to
make sure I am here.

Can we contact you?

Please do! The best way to contact me is by
email. I usually respond that day !

It seems like the computer &
internet is used a lot in this course?

Yes! Another one of Kealakehe’s General
Learner Outcomes is the “Effective &
Ethical use of Technology; The ability to
use a variety of technologies effectively &
ethically”.

I personally feel with today’s technology the
more we expose them in school, that much
further ahead they will be in the “real world” in
the very near future.
What exactly will they be using the
computer for?







Power point creation & presentation
Brochure creation & presentation
Project research
Web page building
Email
E-book (their textbook online with supporting
activities and quizzes)
QUIA
Were there any required supplies?

Yes!
Binder
 Composition notebook
 Active email address
 Optional earphone (bring when needed)

How do you handle group work?







I assigned the groups.
They assigned jobs and sign contracts.
I do frequent check ups assigning grades along
the way.
I constantly check group members are
completing their tasks.
I communicate with all members.
I remove any student “not pulling their weight”
Worst case scenario…they get graded
individually.
