FIRE/EVACUATION
An evacuation is a response that is used when there is a need to move
students, staff and visitors from the school building to another location within
or outside of the campus. The decision to evacuate may be based on
information from law enforcement, fire department or school administration
personnel.
• Remain CALM and follow instructions.
• Move the students in a single file line.
• Take your emergency booklet and class roster (iPad) with you.
• Use the primary exit routes unless the passage is unsafe.
• Move the students to the designated safe assembly area and remain there
until instructed to move.
• Take attendance and identify any missing students as well as students that
belong to another class.
• Keep classes in single file and ordered, quiet lines.
• Hold up the GREEN cover if all of your class is present, the RED if you are
missing a student or have one assigned to another teacher.
• In the event that your class is in specials, the computer lab or the
cafeteria at the time of evacuation you must report to the evacuation
zone for that location with your roster and emergency booklet to support
the students and staff.
LOCKOUT
A lockout is a response that is used when there is a threat OUTSIDE of
the school building. It is the result of criminal activity in the
surrounding neighborhood. The building perimeter is secured and no
one is allowed to enter or leave the building. In addition, students are
brought inside from outdoor activities, exterior doors are secured and
we continue to conduct business as usual until the situation is
resolved by law enforcement.
• Remain CALM and follow instructions.
• Take role, identify and report any non-absent but missing students
to administration through the front office.
• Close and lock all outside doors and windows.
• Continue business as usual.
LOCKDOWN
A lockdown is a response that is used when there is a threat INSIDE of the school
building or on campus. It is the result of an intruder into the building with violent or
unclear intentions. Students and staff will be secured in classrooms BEHIND LOCKED
DOORS until the situation is resolved by law enforcement and building administration.
The key to remember during a lock down is “locks, lights, out-of-site!” Everyone is
empowered to call a lockdown based on individual observations and assessment of a
threat. During a lockdown, students and staff may be required to stay in a classroom
for a long period of time. In a lockdown situation you will hear the following
announcement: “THIS IS A LOCKDOWN! LOCKS, LIGHTS, OUT OF SIGHT!”
• Remain CALM and follow instructions.
• Pull any students into your classroom from the hallway or restrooms.
• Close and lock all interior doors and windows.
• Turn off the lights.
• Close all window coverings except the door window leave it open.
• Place students sitting on the floor at a 90° angle to the door out of sight of the
windows and doors.
• Make sure students are SILENT with cellphones off.
• Do not evacuate unless fire is eminent.
• Do not open the door for ANYONE!!!!
LOCKDOWN RELEASE
The lockdown will be ended by law enforcement and school administration personnel
ONLY. You will remain in your position inside the classroom until you receive
additional instructions WHEN SOMEONE UNLOCKS THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR FOR ANY REASON-IT WILL BE UNLOCKED BY LAW
ENFORCEMENT OR ADMINISTRATION STAFF.
Remain CALM-do not panic, follow instructions.
Form a single file line at the door with the teacher at the back end leaving all
belongings behind.
Take the emergency booklet and roster with you.
Have younger students hold hands with the person in front of and behind them.
WALK, do not run to the next officer for instructions.
Take attendance and identify any missing students as well as students that belong
to another class.
Hold up the GREEN cover if all of your class is present, hold up the RED if you are
missing a student or have a student that is assigned to another teacher. Proceed to
reunification page.
REUNIFICATION/CONTROLLED
RELEASE
The reunification/ controlled release plan may be used to release students to parents
and guardians in the case of a major event (i.e. evacuation to a different site) or a
minor event (i.e. early release for inclement weather). Outlined below are the
procedures for a MAJOR incident to be followed DURING the evacuation process.
These may be scaled back for the situation as deemed appropriate by administrative
staff or an Incident Commander. Modifications may include time of dismissal, means
of transportation, use of exits, staggered release times, etc.
• Take the emergency booklet and class roster (iPad) with you to access student
information.
• Remain CALM and keep your students grouped together.
• Take attendance and identify any missing students as well as students that belong
to another class.
• Deliver the attendance list and missing student’s names to the Reunification site
director.
• If you have an injured student, you will release them to the Reunification site
director. You will stay with your class.
• Ensure special needs students are assisted.
• Provide supervision at the reunification site.
TORNADO
In the event of a tornado the best practice is “down, in and under”. A Tornado Watch
announcement means the conditions for a tornado are present. A Tornado Warning
announcement means a tornado has been sighted. Outlined below are the procedures
for a Tornado Warning.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Remain CALM and follow instructions.
Bring students in from outside when the alarm sounds.
Pull any students into your classroom from the hallway or restroom.
Close your classroom door and windows.
Move the students away from doors and windows to an interior wall.
Line the students facing the interior wall, on their knees with head down and
hands on the back of their neck (tuck and cover position).
Await further instructions for evacuation until an “ALL CLEAR” message is received.
AFTER the threat has passed
• Take attendance and identify any missing students as well as students that belong
to another class. Report these students to the incident commander or
administration.
Child Abuse
Colorado is a mandatory reporting state which means simply that the
individual who suspects the abuse is legally responsible for making certain that the
report is made to the designated agencies immediately.
•
Definition of abuse– ANY physical injury to a child caused by other than accidental means, including any injury
inconsistent with an explanation of how the injury occurred.
– Neglect which can lead to physical harm.
– Sexual molestation and exploitation.
•
•
Who should report?
The adult to whom the child makes the statements of abuse or who witnesses
suspicious behavior or injuries legally MUST report to Social Services.
•
Under the “Child Protection Act of 1987” (C.R.S. 29-3-304 – Children’s Code) All School Personnel are mandated
reporters and have a legal and moral responsibility to make a report if child abuse or neglect reasonably is
suspected.

Reporting Procedures
The staff member should immediately notify an administrator or counselor that they will be
making the report.
Assistance with the process will be provided to the staff member by administration or
counseling while making the report if requested.
The staff member should complete the paperwork for the report that is available in the
nurses’ and counselors’ offices before placing the call. This paperwork is then forwarded to
the appropriate school counselor.
Notify an administrator or counselor immediately if you feel the student may be in imminent
danger to return home.
If the staff member is unsure about the need to report call social services for assistance in
making the determination.
– Notify the appropriate county’s social services department.
– Adam’s County Social Services (303)412-5212
Refer the student to the nurses’ office for documentation of any physical marks on the
student.
DO NOT inform the parents of the report. Social Services will investigate and inform them.
ALL INFORMATION in the matter MUST be kept CONFIDENTIAL. Please do not share the
information with colleagues, friends or family. Administration or counseling will notify
anyone with a vested interest of the situation.
Even if there are no immediate results of the report it is IMPERATIVE that each incident be
reported for documentation.
Power Outage
In the event of a power failure, the emergency generator and the emergency lighting will turn
on. We will continue to conduct business as usual until the situation is resolved. Visitors will not
be allowed to enter the building but students will be released to parents on request. Please
prepare an emergency lesson or activity that is not dependent on technology to occupy the
student’s attention.
In the event of a total power failure (when the emergency generator does not turn on
automatically) we will proceed to Shelter/Stay-In-Place status. Please follow the instructions
below.
 Remain CALM and quiet.
 Do not exit the room (Shelter).
 Instruct students to limit movement inside the room (Stay-In-Place).
 Information will be communicated from room to room by administration when it becomes
available.
 Staff members will be posted at crucial points (hallways, restrooms, etc.) with emergency
lights ASAP.
