Summer Work for 10th Graders
Biology
Biology is the study of the beautiful and wondrous life that inhabits this planet. Starting with the cell,
we will build a foundation of knowledge that will allow us to explore the areas of genetics, evolution,
ecology, microbiology, botany, and zoology. This summer work was created to prepare you to be
successful in the subject of biology. This packet must be completed and turned in no later than August
15th. There will be a tray for you to turn your work in to the main office of the high school.

Scientific Name
Find and match the scientific names of the organisms’ common names using the following key. With
every organism, start at number one. Choose the description that best fits the organism. Then, follow
the appropriate numbers until they end with a scientific name. For example, the dog is an animal so we
move on to number 2. It does not have wings so we move on to number 6. It lives on land so we go to
number 7. It has fluffy fur so we go to number 8. Finally, it is a common pet which gives us the scientific
name Canis familiaris. Scientific names are always written in this fashion, with the first word capitalized,
the second word never capitalized and typed in italics or, when written it is underlined. Don’t forget to
write these correctly! (1 point each)

The following section of your summer work requires you to obtain photographs of organisms native to
Ohio and identify them with a common and scientific name. You should print out these pictures and
attach them to this packet or attach a picture CD. (3 points each)
