PSSC Minutes February 25, 2013 In Attendance: Tom Cameron, Sally MacGrath, Sheila Bartlett, Mandy MacKinnon, Charlene Merrill, and Dawn Piercy. Absent: Nola Carr, Kim Turnbull, and PSSC student reps Bailey Flynn and Janelle Humble. Due to Nola's absence, Charlene Merrill chaired the meeting. past minutes are reviewed and the following amendment was made pertaining to high school course outline. Although we are a small school, courses will be offered to accommodate student's wishes and well prepare them for their compulsory needs going forward to university. Sally moved that the minutes were amended and approved. Mandy seconded the motion. District has issued a document containing community use of school allowances and a copy has been given to the village office. automated phone system changes are still in progress. Charlene reads from a document issued by Jody Carr about the new "Tell Them From Me" survey. This survey will be sent home with students in grades 4-12 and is used to gather feedback from students and parents about school related issues and events. Our school has been successfully doing a similar survey for the past few years. another letter is read by Charlene, also issued from Jody Carr. This letter is addressed to Mr. McTimoney (Superintendent of Anglophone West School District) concerning Capital Budget. Stanley High School was not on the list, however we had some renovations done and school improvements during the previous year. Assessment Plan Review: students in grades 7,8,9 and 10 are doing French interviews math testing will be done in June for grade 8 students literacy testing for grades 7 and up is already done math and science assessments for grade 6 are to be done in April oral testing for grade 12 French assessment was completed in January the grade 9 ELPA was done in January instead of a LA exam we are looking at provincial results and comparing them to our school's results also taking in to consideration classroom sizes and student class composition. several teachers are going for professional learning seminars and doing additional webbased training student's needs have been well attended to. Online courses are supervised, and courses have been added to accommodate specific students' needs. Principal's Report: There was a successful ski trip to Crabbe Mountain for the Middle School Tom reviewed the late bus/ missing student policy. A staff member stays at the school until at least 4PM, until time when all students should be off the bus. If a parent calls to report a child that has not come home on the bus as planned, a call is placed to District to report the incident and a staff member is sent to check all school areas for that student. Search continues until child has been found. Parents must send a note to alert school and bus drivers if there is a change in busing plans. in regards to budget additions, Carney O'Hara has been hired to do a history based Enrichment Project with approx. 9 grade 8 students. This project will wrap up at the end of March. it is anti-bullying day on Wednesday. Students are encouraged to wear pink t-shirts. From 9:45-10:45, students will be participating in a video conference call with Travis (the student from Nova Scotia that started the anti-bullying pink t-shirt campaign). A question period will follow immediately after the call. The Beyond The Hurt group of kids will be visiting classes to introduce new way of putting complaints in the bully box. Also, 2 movies will be shown in the afternoon concerning cyber bullying and new student bullying. MADD will be doing a presentation later in the spring PARTY program will also be doing a presentation in Doaktown for our grade 9 class in the spring In grade 8, Mr. Nicholson has been doing child right lessons with them since the advocate was here the Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships presentation was well attended and well received by students Andy Thibeau was here and spoke to students. His presentation went well also several teachers attended an inclusion workshop and learned different techniques to help keep students successful in a classroom setting that may have psychological, social and intellectually challenging situations. Also, they learned different techniques to help provide assistance to students that need it. Principal's Cluster meeting took place and those in attendance broke into groups and discussed several topics that affect small schools. Principals there were from several small schools including: Chipman, Plaster Rock, Harvey, McAdam and Stanley. Another meeting is planned for the March Break. No DEC update security review in progress. PSSC discussed locked lobby (in future) and unanimously voted in favor of lock/intercom for the main lobby area of the school. next meeting date Monday, April 8 meeting adjourned Minutes submitted by Dawn Piercy
