INTRODUCTIONS
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
•How do One-Pagers support Core Action 1 and
Core Action 2?
•How can One-Pagers fit into my curriculum?
WHAT ARE ONE-PAGERS?
• Short, close readings that focused on vocabulary comprehension and test
preparation for the Smarter-Balanced assessment.
• An alternative way to get students to read, analyze, and understand a complex
text.
• Smaller chunk of text than a Close Read.
• Text-specific questions focused on comprehension and the understanding of
vocabulary in the context of a content-rich document.
WHY SHOULD I USE ONE-PAGERS?
• One-Pagers can be created and used for any unit of instruction. They fit into
the WCSD Scope and Sequence.
• They can be used in a variety of different ways.
• Students can practice answering text-specific and text-dependent questions.
• Up to 18-20% of the questions on the Smarter-Balanced assessment will deal
specifically with understanding academic vocabulary within the context of the
text.
SNAPSHOT MODEL OF LESSON:
• We will be working through a One-Pager model lesson.
• Please engage in this activity as a student.
• Please note “teacher” thoughts or questions on a post-it note
(for post-reading activity)
TEACHER REFLECTIONS AND QUESTIONS:
ADDRESSING CORE ACTION 1:
Where can I find complex texts?
• EYEWITNESS TO HISTORY: WWW.EYEWITNESSTOHISTORY.COM
• ABC-CLIO: WWW.ABC-CLIO.COM
• NATIONAL ARCHIVES: WWW.ARCHIVES.GOV
• LIBRARY OF CONGRESS: WWW.LOC.GOV
ADDRESSING CORE ACTION 2:
• Determine the essential understanding(s) of the text. What do you care about
students knowing and understanding when they finish reading this text?
• Ask text-dependent questions: requires students to answer questions using
evidence from the text; cannot be answered without reading the text.
• Ask text-specific questions: requires students to delve into the particular
complexities of the text; based solely on that text, not generalizable.
• Determine any essential academic vocabulary words that can be addressed in
the context of the document. Write questions for those words.
• Write any questions that will help students with syntax or difficult transitions.

SESSION REFLECTION:
•Think of the units that you teach:
• Is there an existing One-Pager that could fit into a unit?
• Could you create a One-Pager for a unit?
•What questions do you still have?
