SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIFTED STUDENTS
Summer Program Scholarship Applications for Gifted Students
Virginia Association for the Gifted (VAG) Summer Scholarships
VAG has announced that it will offer summer scholarships designed for those gifted students who
wish to attend academic or artistic programs during the summer months. The scholarship application
deadline is March 1. Get the VAG Summer Scholarship Application Form at

FINE ARTS APPRENTICE PROGRAM APPLICATION
Applications for the 2013-2014 School Year Fine Arts Apprentice Program are available on the APS
Arts Education link: http://www.apsva.us/page/1722
The Fine Arts Apprentice Program provides specialized experiences beyond the regular art, music and
drama curriculum for selected high school students (rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders). Opportunities
for students may include ensemble works, master classes, attendance at professional rehearsals and
performances, museum courses, small group instruction, seminars, exhibit and performance
opportunities.
Students may also pick up an application from their high school resource teacher for the gifted.
There will be an information night on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, 6:00 pm, at Kenmore Middle School.
Students selected for the Apprentice Program receive a pass/fail grade and a 1/2 credit for a minimum
of 75 hours of arts experience outside the school course requirements. These opportunities take place
out of the school day and are often offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students are able to
select opportunities of interest that work with their school commitments and extra-curricular activities.

Summer Laureate – Grades: K-4the

Summer Laureate is a challenging and fast-paced program for recommended highly able students, who
demonstrate creativity, rapid learning, inquisitiveness, self-direction, and a desire for an academic experience
in the summer. Enriching academic activities will emphasize the development of productive thinking skills and
the application of various disciplines. Grade level instructional themes:
 Kindergarten:
Environment: with a focus on the sights and sounds of the city versus the country;
 Grade 1: Flight: a look at flight in nature and man-made flight;
 Grade 2: Movement: a look at movement in humans and animals to mechanical man-made movement;
 Grade 3: Structure: a simulation focused on how a town’s structure is impeded by an earthquake and
must rebuild the physical, social, and governmental structures;
 Grade 4: Future: an investigation into future human life on a space station.

world cultures and global issues through multi-media technology, language experiences, and

The STARTALK Arabic and Chinese Program is intended for students who have not studied or have limited
knowledge of these languages. The goal of this program is to motivate students to begin or continue the study
of Arabic and Chinese. The program can accommodate up to 25 students per language. Focus of study will be
on understanding main aspects of target culture and communicating about everyday needs and experiences
through field trips, hands-on activities, song, and technology.
This program is contingent upon approval of a federal grant.

The STARTALK Summer elementary exploratory program is intended for students who have not studied these
languages. Arlington students can begin foreign language study in the 7th grade. The goal of this program is to
expose students to these less commonly taught languages within the context of thematic units geared to
students’ developmental level and interests. The program can accommodate up to 15 students (4th and 5th
graders combined) per language. The focus of study will be on understanding main aspects of the cultural
richness of China and Egypt and on communicating about everyday needs and experiences through hands-on
activities and projects.
This program is contingent upon approval of a federal grant.

A wide variety of learning opportunities are available to

Pre-college summer program in American History. This
3-week summer academic course offers high school
students 4 hours of college credit in a unique topic.
Course is taught on site at numerous museums,
archaeology sites and historic places in the Chesapeake
region. The National Institute of American History and
Democracy (NIAHD) is a partnership with the College of
William and Mary and Colonial Williamsburg.
FCSEC combines academic enrichment classes with
