Cellular Respiration ATP! The purpose of cellular respiration is to take the chemical energy in the food we eat or the food that plants produce during photosynthesis and make an energy molecule called ATP. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. ATP! ATP! ATP is an amazing molecule because it provides the energy our body needs to function. When a phosphate group is broken off of the ATP molecule, the molecule becomes ADP (adenosine diphosphate)and a large amount of energy is released. When a phosphate group is added to the ADP, forming ATP, the energy is stored. Cellular Respiration Cellular respiration occurs in both plant and animal cells. Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cell. Mitochondria Mitochondria are a peanut-shaped structure with a double membrane and their own DNA. The outer membrane is smooth, while the inner membrane is folded into structures called cristae.
