(Brief description of proposed change, addition or deletion.) Proposed establishment of a Sociology Minor Justification. (Briefly list main reasons for proposed change, addition or deletion.) Students have been requesting a Sociology Minor option. This Minor would be available to students completing a Major in any area, and would enrich their educational experience. Courses suggested for the Minor are established and have been offered at PNC for several years. Some students may have already completed enough Sociology courses to qualify for the Sociology Minor designation. Use the Current and Proposed spaces below for course changes only. Otherwise, mark “N/A”. Current: (Course changes: present catalog info.) N/A (No changes to existing SOC courses.) Course Objectives. Proposed: (Course changes: new catalog information.) A Sociology Minor permits students to gain recognition for a secondary academic interest, specifically in sociology. The Minor requires 15 hours of credit with a “C” or better grade for each course counted toward the Sociology Minor. At least 9 hours of credit must be in courses numbered “30000” or higher. (For new courses only. List main learning objectives. If lengthy, attach as separate page.) N/A (No new SOC courses or course changes being proposed.) Impact on Students. (State “N/A” if proposal will not greatly affect students.) Students who wish to pursue a Sociology Minor will now have the opportunity to do so. Students who are currently enrolled at PNC, and who have completed some or all of the required Sociology courses required for the Sociology Minor (with a “C” or better), may count these courses toward a Sociology Minor, with approval of the full-time Sociology faculty, when the Sociology Minor option becomes available. Required core courses (SOC 10000 and 22000) taken at other accredited institutions of higher education will be accepted toward completion of the requirements for the Sociology Minor at PNC provided that the student completed the course with a grade of “C” or better. Only 30000- and 40000—level courses in Sociology taken at PNC shall count toward the required nine credit hours of advanced Sociology courses required for the Sociology Minor. Students who successfully complete the Sociology Minor will have this Minor designated on their official PNC transcript. Impact on University Resources. (State “N/A” if proposal will not require new resources, faculty or funds.) There are currently enough Sociology courses to meet the needs of this Minor. We will continue to ask the Library for additional resources to support these courses. Impact on other Academic Units. (State “N/A” if proposal will not affect other units.) N/A. Three advanced courses in Sociology provide more in-depth knowledge for students, allowing students to build either a broadly generalist education in Sociology or a more focused knowledge base. Minimum credits required for the Minor in Sociology is 15. For all courses in the SOC minor: (1) a minimum grade of “C” is required in order for a course to count toward credit for earning the Sociology Minor, (2) a student may only repeat a SOC course counting toward the Minor a maximum of two times, including all withdrawals and (3) no SOC course counting toward the Minor may be taken as Pass/No Pass. This Minor can be attached to any Major at Purdue North Central whose department will allow it. The Sociology Minor may not be pursued by students who complete the Sociology Option for the Bachelor in Behavioral Sciences degree.
