Summer Music Camps for Motivated Students

NEW YORK
Crane Youth Music, Potsdam, is celebrating its 39th session this summer. The program continues a heritage of
outstanding and cost-effective musical training for young musicians ages 12-18. The staff includes Crane School of
Music faculty supplemented by additional guest artists/ teachers. Students attend masterclasses, perform in large
ensembles, and receive training in music theory and aural skills. Pianists receive individual lessons, coaching, and
group lessons in electronic keyboard labs. String performers participate in string sectionals, chamber music groups,
and orchestra. Instrumentalists rehearse with a band twice daily as well as perform in chamber ensembles.
Vocalists perform in a variety of choral ensembles.Tuition with housing $975, tuition alone $660. 7/1-7/14/2012.

Summer Music Festival, Fredonia, is open to instrumental music students enrolled in grades 9-12. The 22nd annual
Fredonia Summer Music Festival offers a friendly and relaxed setting for musical growth through large ensemble
and chamber music performances. Set on the campus of SUNY Fredonia, the festival takes advantage of first-rate
facilities and world-class teachers. Many of the festival faculty are also professors at the university. In addition to
band rehearsals, chamber ensembles, and jazz groups, students attend daily musicianship classes, participate in
masterclasses, attend special evening performances, and have time for individual practice and recreation. We
intentionally keep our tuition and fees as low as possible to make this outstanding experience available to
everyone. Tuition and fees include ensemble participation, all instruction, attendance at professional music
performances and masterclasses, daily recreation, all meals, and a camp t-shirt. Tuition with housing $720, tuition

Ithaca College Summer Piano Institute, Ithaca, invites talented young pianists for 10 days of intensive piano study
in the heart of the Institute Finger Lakes. This year's institute will be held June 28 - July 7, 2012 on the beautiful
Ithaca College campus. Pianists aged 12 - 18 years old are welcome to apply. Nationally and internationally known
Ithaca College piano faculty members provide daily lessons, workshops, classes, and supervised practice. Students
will participate in a final showcase recital, daily ensemble, and mini-elective class choices. The Piano Institute
welcomes residential and commuter students. Recreational and social activities are included, such as a night at the
theater, sunny excursions to our local state parks, and movie nights. $1280 commuter tuition, $1780 residential
tuition.
Luzerne Music Center, Lake Luzerne. Founded in 1980, a summer camp and performing arts center located in the
New York Adirondacks. LMC offers an international summer music program for talented student instrumentalists,
ages 11 through 18. LMC maintains special relationships with the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet.
Junior Session students travel to performances of the New York City Ballet, while Senior Session students attend
weekly performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra, all held at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in nearby
Saratoga Springs, NY. Philadelphia Orchestra members and visiting performing artists present masterclasses and
sectionals for all instruments on campus throughout the summer. Located on beautiful Lake Luzerne, LMC provides
a positive and nurturing environment for students to learn and perform. At LMC, students have the opportunity to
perform in a variety of large and small ensembles all while receiving weekly private lessons. $1850 for a 2-week

Nazareth College Summer Piano Camp, Rochester. Day camp offering participants private and group piano
instruction and piano ensembles, along with classes in music theory, sight-reading, guided listening, rhythm and
movement, improvisation, and composition. For students entering grades 8 through 12. July 9-13. Participants
should bring two prepared repertoire selections. Tuition only. $275. 19 students, 6 teachers.

Saint Rose Summer Youth Music, Albany. The two-week day camp encompasses four concentrations: wind
ensemble, orchestra, select choir, and piano intensive study. Students entering grades 8-12 with a minimum of
three years of instruction are eligible for registration. Many merit scholarships available. All students participate in
major ensemble rehearsals and performances, including all-camp choir as well as music theory, ear training, music
history, chamber ensembles, and applied study (optional). Three concerts are presented during the two-week
period and two field trips are included in the tuition. Only full-time Saint Rose faculty teach/conduct major

NEW HAMPSHIRE
University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School, Durham. For 65 years, the program has offered
students a chance to spend time making music together. A Junior Session and a Senior Session are offered each
summer. Junior Session students must have just completed grade 7 or 8, and Senior Session students must have
just completed grade 9, 10, 11, or 12. Students concentrate on a major instrument or voice part and choose
electives to broaden their experience. They associate with other talented young musicians who share their
excitement about music, and they study with outstanding teachers and freelance artists. Junior Session: Tuition

PENNSYLVANIA
Lebanon Valley College Summer Music Camp, Annville. Calling all high school age (campers entering 8th
grade can apply with special permission) musicians and vocalists, come join the fun at our 25th annual Summer
Music Camp. Learn from professional music faculty at a college known for its programs in music, music education,
music business, and music recording technology. Share your love and passion for music with other students from
all over the East Coast. You can plan your own camp experience by selecting a mix of programs, ensembles, and
lessons. Performance areas include concert band, string ensemble, piano, guitar/bass, jazz band, and theater

Penn State Summer Music Camp, University Park. Students will meet other talented students and learn from
Penn State’s music faculty and guest artists. If accepted, piano students will receive a minimum of ninety minutes
of private lessons with Penn State faculty and participate daily in classes chosen from keyboard technique,
harmonization, sight reading, history, conducting, keyboard literature, and theory. They could be chosen to
perform in a public master class during the week. Pianists are afforded from three to five hours per day of
monitored practice time in order to prepare for the multiple lessons they will have during the week. Tuition with

VERMONT
Summer Sonatina, Old Bennington, is an international piano camp for students (ages 7-16) held in a large
historic mansion. It just finished its 43rd season. The camp’s philosopy encourages students to become dedicated,
serious musicians who develop resourcefulness, thoughtfulness and self-discipline. Musical progress is based on
each student’s ability. Emphasis is on all aspects of music and also on lasting personal relationships with fellow
musicians. A group atmosphere is created which allows children to grow responsibly with peers and as a member
of a wider musical family. Students participate in concert rehearsals, sight reading, chorus, theory and composition
classes, master classes, musical discussions, as well as many recreational activities (dances, movies, ice cream trips,
musical productions, plays, theater, weekly trip to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center or Tanglewood Music
Center, arts and crafts, baking, blueberry picking, composing, hiking, picnics, museum trips, sports, swimming,
sigtseeing tirp to downtown Bennington). Summer Sonatina accepts beginners as well as advanced performing
pianists, ranging in age from 7 to 16. No auditions are required. A minimum of 2 weeks is recommended to fully
benefit from the camp experience. But we will accept a limited number of single week applications also. An all
inclusive fee of $975 per week covers 3-5 lessons, room and board, music books, tickets to cultural events, and all
recreational activities. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of application form and
deposit, so please apply early to ensure you have spots. Registration is ongoing, starting January 1st.
