Preface
Purpose: This document provides a general view of technologies currently
offered and supported at Algonquin College.
The technology environment at Algonquin, like other academic institutions, is
continually evolving.
Many other tools are used by specific departments and individual faculty members.
Blackboard (Learning Management System)
Virtual Classroom Space
PURPOSE OF TOOL
An online extension of a regular classroom or
the learning environment for fully online
courses. This online space can support learning
resources, communication, student
collaboration, and evaluation.
USERS

Basic: Post announcements, documents,
and text entries.

Mediasite
PURPOSE OF TOOL
A tool that video captures classroom events,
such as lecturettes, guest speakers, or other
events, and live stream them via the web.

-Videos can be viewed on-demand since they
are stored on Algonquin College’s Media
Site server. Video links are sent by email.

-Customized template can be created
with a presentation name and presenter

ePortfolios
Create a dynamic, self-contained eportfolio
within one file that is portable and easily
viewable.

Searchable, Interactive Documents
The pdf format includes lots of possibility
for creating self-contained, searchable
information repositories within one document.
Basic: Creating a portfolio is simply a matter
of adding resources to a pdf template.

Digital Activities
PURPOSE OF TOOL
Interactive Learning Activities or
Learning Objects can be designed for
specific courses and programs. These
activities allow students to review
challenging concepts and skills. Feedback is
provided as students work through the
activities.
MAIN FEATURES
-can include animations and simulated
scenarios
-activities that are created are stored on a
server. A link is created and can be posted
in a Blackboard course space or sent
to learners via email.

Basic: Instructor
Note: there is considerable planning
and development time is required. Developer
and instructors collaborate over a period of
time to create customized interactive
activities.
As such, creation of Learning Objects
are best suited for concepts or skills
that students struggle with and for
which other resources do not exist.
