OCCE Discussion Thread: Related Question – Residential Job Postings November 16, 2005 Original Message: Karen McClughan <karenm@lambton.on.ca> Sent by: maiser@algonquincollege.com 11/16/2005 12:59 PM Please respond to occe@algonquincollege.com To OCCE List <occe@algonquincollege.com> cc Subject Related Question Hi all - Angie's e-mail caused me to want some further answers on a related issue. We have been receiving more and more residential job postings. These are to provide care for people with disabilities, tutors, residential jobs i.e. gardening, computer assistance, home repair, moving boxes, provide care for the elderly etc. They are often looking for students from the Social Service Worker, Child & Youth Worker, Nursing, ECE programs to provide these services. Is there an implied liability that they think they are hiring "qualified" people to perform these services? I feel that we need to develop a policy at Lambton College on how to handle these postings (if at all) Since we post our information online I am concerned about putting much of this information out there. I also am concerned about the liability of our students working in home care situations but by the same token it can often be a positive experience. I also find that these people take more time to deal with explain what they have to do to post the job etc. Do other college have a policy surrounding posting these types of jobs and if so would you share it. What are your thoughts and how do you handle these postings or how do you turn down these requests? I don't want to have to always refer them to the appropriate agency for these types of postings as this can become time consuming as well. Thanks for you help-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Karen McClughan, Co-op & Career Services Lambton College, 1457 London Rd. For instance a (supposed) disabled male specifies a female PSW.... it doesn't get posted. Perhaps we do need another policy rather than relying on Career Services gut feelings. Angie, I have not received the e mail but a hotmail with no particulars doesn't cut it. I am waiting for an answer back from our Aboriginal Learning Unit Counselors as this maybe a first nation's initiative. Here is what is written on the employer posting section of our website: >>Fanshawe College Career Services does not post personal service or private home jobs such as child care, homecare for the elderly or disabled, landscaping or interior design. For service, we recommend that you contact an appropriate business or agency. Many Fanshawe students/graduates own or are employed with such firms. Alternatively, the local Human Resources Development Centre (HRDC) number can be found in the telephone book blue pages or through: www.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca >> I should mention, we will post private care jobs for DSW and PSW but only IF there is the appropriate insurance and protection in place for the employee. We did go through several channels here at the college before putting this policy in place. Karen: This is a huge topic. We don't have an official policy surrounding these postings. We do accept and post these requests unless as Bob mentioned there is something obviously not right about it or if it is breaching some official legislation. When the media (newspaper, tv or radio) advertise something or broadcast a program, they are not usually liable. Often you even see them post a message stating that "the opinions are not shared by the station broadcasting the program, etc." We are not actually placing the students or graduates into these jobs. We are posting them as option for the job seekers to consider and research. Perhaps it would be useful to invite a legal expert of some sort to provide some feedbackat one of our P.D. sessions. It would be interesting to have an open question/answer forum to perhaps clarify where our liabilities lie with these types of postings. Anyway, these are just a few thoughts. Thank you for bringing this up, Karen. We refer all others to the HRDC Job site. Faculty have agreed with this, especially for the home day care/babysitting positions. Joanne, I think that is an excellent idea for PD. And thank you all for responding to my request earlier, I am going to take you up on your advice!! I just hate the thought of someone's career being stopped short before it begins because of injury, accident, or a mistake made in an unsupervised environment. Interesting questions! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------Karen McClughan <karenm@lambton.on.ca> Sent by: maiser@algonquincollege.com 11/16/2005 02:17 PM I am glad to see this is such a hot topic. We have tried to involve faculty in some of this but they seem to have a "hands off" on this topic. Please keep more of your thoughts coming in. I need all of the help and advice you can provide. Wendy - thank you for submitting your policy - this is great!! Thank you all again for being such a supportive organization. I always know where to go for help. However, we do have one policy that we stick to and it is that if you post a job with us the pay must be at least minimum wage. Plus it must be shown on the job posting (so they don't tell us one thing and the student another). We advise our employers tht we are a public institution and cannot be listing jobs to students on our on-line posting system that pay $3, $4 or $5 per hour. This quite often discourages them. I always tell them they can pay a different salary by posting their job on the grocery store boards if they wish but not through the college. Betty
